Fig. V is a front elevation of said look, similar to Fig. -IV, but showing the rotary key hub turned one-sixth revolution clockwise, which is the full extent of its move ment by the guard key, preliminary to the unlocking movement of said slide bolt, by the main key for which the mechanism has been adjusted. However, said key hub must be turned backward by the guard key to the position shown in Fig. IV, and said guard key withdrawn before said main key is inserted.
Fig. VI is a front elevation of said look. similar to Figs. IV and V, but showing said rotary key hub returned to the same position as in Fig. V, but by the main key for which it has been adjusted; so as to shift said locking bolt to its normal unlocked position, which is shown in Fig. VI.
Fig. VII is a front elevation of said look, similar to Fig. VI, but with the auxiliary lock unlocked to permit the combination to be changed. Such change is effectedby turning said rotary key hub, clock-wise, onesixth revolution, from its locked position shown in Fig. I, but by means of the auxiliary lock key inserted in the guard key hole of said hub, to unlock the auxiliary lock; said hub being then returned anticlock-wise, to the normal position shown in Fig. IV, by said auxiliary lock key, to permit the latter to bewithdrawn; and said key hub is then turned one-half revolution, from its. locked position shown in Fig. I, to not only retract said locking bolt but withdraw the pivoted main tumblers aforesaid,- to the position shown in Fig. VII, in which their sectoral series of gear teeth are disengaged fromthe sectoral series of gear teeth'of the rotary fences aforesaid.
Fig. VIII is a front elevation of said lock, similar to Fig. IV, but with the. combination of said tumblers changed by inserting a different main key in said rotary hub, while the latter is in the position shown in Fig. VII, and turnng it, anticlockwise, to sweep said main tumblers into cooperative adjusti'nent with respect to that key, and reengage them with said rotary fences, in the position shown in Fig. VIII; which is different from that shown in Figs. IV to VI inclusive. Fig. VIII alsoshows the auxiliary lock in its normal locked position as in Figs. I and IV to VI inclusive; so that Fig. VIII differs from Fig. IV only as to the position of said main tumblers.

Moreover, the guard lever 56, which is fulcrumed on the stud 57 which is in rigid relation with said casing 2, is provided with the spring 58 having its free end bearing upon said casing so as to normally present the detent arm 59 of said lever intoengagement with the shoulder 60 on said locking bolt 1., to detain the latter in the locked position shown in. Figs. I and IV, and means must be employed to release said guard lever 56 by manipulation of said guard key 52, as follows:
Said guard lever 56 has the stump 61 adapted to enter the gatings 62 of the guard tumblers 63 which are pivoted on the stud 6 1 which is in stationary relationwith said casing2, and said guard tumblers 63 are provided with respective springs 66 bearing at their free ends upon said casing 2 and tending to turn said tumblers upwardly into the position shown in Fig. IV in which position said tumblers 63 are stopped by their projections 67 encountering said stump 61. Said guard lever 56 has the arm 69 carrying the stud 70 which is adapted to be encountered by the releasing tumbler 71 which is also pivoted on said stationary stud 64 and provided with the spring 72 having its free end bearing upon said casing and tending to turn said releasing tumbler into the position shown in Fig. IV. It may be observed that when said guard lever 56. is turned into the position shown in Fig. V, its stud 70, is in position to be encountered by said releasing tumbler; so that said guard lever 56 may be released and restored to its normal position, (to detain said locking boltl as shown in Fig. IV,) by downward movement of said releasing tumbler 71, when the latter. is swept downwardly by said main key 53, turning said rotary hub 39.
Said guard key. 52 and main key 53 are used to manipulate said lock, asfollows:
The lock mechanism being in the position shown in Figs. I and IV said guard key 52 is inserted in said keyway 47 in' said hub 39 and the latter turned, clockwise, approximately, 60 degrees; the shape of said recess 11 in said locking bolt 1 being such as to permit such movement of the cam 40, without shifting said bolt 1. Said key52 is bitted so as to sweep said tumblers 63 into position to receive said stump 61 in their gatings 62 and to then turn said guard lever 56 into the. position shown in Fig. V, by the projecting bit 74 of said guard key 52, bearing upon the shoulder 75 of said guard lever 56. Thereupon, said hub 39 being returned to its normal position shown in Figs. I and IV, and said guard 28 and their respective fences 24 into posi- J tion to receive said stump 21 in the gatings 22 of said fences, thus permitting said cam 40, turning in said recess 41, to thrust said locking bolt 1 rearward to said unlocked position.

I claim: 7 1. In a changeable combination'key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt having a stump; a rotary key hub with a main keyway and a guard keyway; main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof, including a series of counterpart pivoted main tumblers, each having a sectoral series of gear teeth at its free end and each adjustable, at its free end, to change the combination; a series of counterpart ro- -tary fences having respective sectoral series of gear teeth arranged to mesh \vith'the gear teeth on sa1d respective main tumblers;
each of said fences having a gating adapted to receive said locking bolt stump; a change plate, carry ng said tumblers and movable "in said casing to disengage said tumblers from said fences and'permit said tumblers 'to be changed; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof, ineluding a guard lever having a detent arm arranged to detachably engage said locking bolt, and'having a portion adapted to 'be encountered by a guard key to disengage said detent arm from said locking bolt, and having a crank pin arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism, and a series of pivoted guard tumblers arranged to hold and release said guard lever in accordance with the posit-ion thereof, and controllable by said guard key; auxiliary lockmecha nism, in said casing, including a reciproeatory bolt adapted to normally prevent movement of said change plate, a lever fulc umed in said casing, in cooperative relation with said auxiliary bolt, and a bell cranlrlatch pivoted to said auxiliary bolt le er and. having one arm extending in position to be operated by an auxiliary key, inserted in said guard keyway, to unlock said auxiliary bolt, and another arm adapted to engage said casing and hold said auxiliary bolt in unlocked position, subject to automatic release by said crank pin; said auxiliary lock bolt being movable by said auxiliary key, to release said change plate and permit the combination 1f said tumblers to be changed; hereby a guardkey'and main key are required to be successively inserted in the respective keyways in said hub to turn the latter to open the lock, and said main tumblers are pivotally adjustable with respect to said change plate, to change the lock, by manipulation of said auxiliary lock mechanism with an auxiliary lock key inserted in said guard keywa-y, to be operated by different main keys while subject to operation by the same guard key.
2. In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt; a rotary key hub with a main keyway and a guard keyway; main'tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with th position thereof, including a series of pivoted main tumblers, each having a sectoral series of gear teeth at its free end and each adjustable, at its free end, to change the combination; a series of rotary fences having respective sectoral series of gear teeth arranged to mesh with the gear teeth on said respective main tumblers; a change plate, carrying said tumblers and movable'in said casing to disengage said tumblers from said fences and permit said tumblers to be changed; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof, including a guard lever having a crank pin arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism, and a guard tumbler arranged to hold and release said guard lever in accordance with the position there of, and controllable by said guard key; auxiliary lock mechanism, in said casing, including a movable bolt adapted to normally prevent movement of said change plate, a lever in cooperative relation with said auxiliary bolt, a latch pivoted tosaid auxiliary bolt lever and extending in position to be operated by an auxiliary key, inserted in said guard keyway, to unlock said auxiliary bolt and another arm adapted to engage said casing and hold said auxiliary bolt in unlocked position, subject to automatic release by said crank pin; said auxiliary lock bolt being movable by said auxiliary key, to release said change plate and permit the tumbler combination to be changed; whereby a guard key and a main key are required to be successively inserted in the respective keyways in said hub to turn the latter to open the lock, and said main tumblers are pivotally adjustable with respect to said change plate, to change the lock to be operated by different main keys.

In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt; a rotary key hub with a main keyway and a guard keyway; main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof, including a series of pivoted main tumblers, each having a sectoral series of gear teeth at its free end and each adjustable, at its free end, to change the combination; a series of rotary fences having respective sectoral series of gear teeth arranged to mesh withthe gear teeth on said respective main tumblers; a support for said tumblers, movable in said casing to disengage said tumblers from said fences and permit said tumblers to be changed; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof, including a crank arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism, and controllable by a guard key; auxiliary lock mechanism, including a movable bolt adapted tonormally prevent movement of said support, a lever in cooperative relation with said auxiliary bolt, a latch pivoted to said auxiliary bolt lever and extending in position to be operated by an auxiliary key to unlock said auxiliary bolt and adapted to hold said auxiliary bolt in unlocked. position, subject to release by said crank pin; said auxiliary lock bolt being movable by an auxiliary key, to release said support and permit the tumbler combination to be ha e w eby a guard k y an a a key are requiredto be successively inserted in the respective keyways in said hub to turn the latter to open the lock, and said main tumblers are pivotally adjustable with e pe t w deh n e p a to change th lock to be'operated by different main keys. en a shang a l m na n y lock, tllGCOlllbll'ifilllOil with a casing; of a locking bolt mounted to reciprocate said casing; a tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof and including a stud shaft laterally movable in'said casing; a series of sectoral gear tumblers, pivoted on said shaft; a stud shaft stationary in said casa series of sectoralgear fences pivoted on said stationary shaft; a rotary key hub in operative relation with saidbo'lt; auxiliary lock mechanism in said casing normally preventing disengagement of said tumblers from said fences and means said casing, arranged to be operated by an auxiliary lock key, inserted in said hub, tojrelease'said auxiliary lock mechanism and permit said tumblers to be disengaged from their fences to change the combination of said tumblers.

In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt movable in said casing; a tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof and including a rotary gear tumbler; a rotary gear fence; a rotary key hub in opertive relation with said bolt; auxiliary lock mechanism in said casing normally preventing disengagement of said tumbler from said fence; and means in said casing, arranged to be operated by an auxiliary lock key, in serted in said hub, to release said auxiliary lock mechanism and permit said tumbler to be disengaged from said fence to change the relative position thereof.
11. In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt movable in said casing; a tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof and including a rotary gear tumbler; a rotary gear fence; a rotary key hub in operative relation with said bolt; auxiliary lockmechanism in said casingnormally preventing disengagement of said tumbler from said fence; and means in said casing, arranged to be operated by an auxiliary lock key, to release said auxiliary lock mechanism and permit said tumbler to be disengaged from said fence to change the relative position thereof.
12. In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a reciprocatory looking bolt; of tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; a rotary key hub having a main keyway and a guard keyway; a reciprocatory and oscillatory change plate, movable to change the combination of said tumbler mechanism; an, auxiliary lock mechanism normally preventing movement of said change plate and including means operable by an auxiliary key inserted in said guard keyway to release said change plate; whereby a guard key and a main key are required to be successively inserted in the respective. keyways in said key hub to unlock said locking bolt, and that guard key, an auxiliary key, and that main key, are required to be successively inserted in said key hub to permit change of the combination of said tumbler mechanism.
13. In a changeable combination lock, the
combination with a movable locking bolt; of tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the po sition thereof; a rotary key hub having a main keyway and a guard keyway; a change element, movable to change the combination of said tumbler mechanism; an auxiliary lock mechanism normally preventing moveruent of said changeelement and including means operable by an auxiliary key inserted in said guard key vay to release said change clement; whereby a guard key and a main l y are required to be successively inserted in the.respectivekeyways in said key hub to unlock said locking bolt, and that guard key, an auxiliary key, and that main key, are required to be successively inserted in said key hub to permit change of the combination of said tumbler mechanism.

In a changeable combination lock, the combination with a movable locking bolt; of tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; a rotary key hub; a change element, movable to change the combination of said tumbler mechanism; and an auxiliary lock mechanism normally preventing movement of said change element and including means operable by an auxiliary key inserted in said key hub. p

In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt; a rotary key hub with a main keyway and a guard keyway; a guard lever having a crank pin arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism; a guard tumbler arranged to hold and release said guard lever in accordance with the position there of, and controllable by a guard key inserted in. said guard keyway; auxiliary lock mechanism in said casing, including a movable bolt, a lever in cooperative relation with said auxiliary bolt, and a latch pivoted to said auxiliary bolt lever, extending in posi tion to be operated by a key inserted in said guard keyway, to unlock said auxiliary bolt,
and adapted to engage said casing and hold said auxiliary bolt in unlocked position, subject to automatic release by said crank pin. 17. In a changeable combination key lock, the combination with a casing; ofa locking bolt; a guard lever having a crank pin arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism; a guard tumbler arranged to hold and release said guard lever in accordance with the. position thereof, and controllable by a key; auxiliary lock mechanism in said casing, including a movable bolt, a lever in cooperative relation with said auxiliary bolt; and a latch pivoted to said auxiliary bolt lever and extending in position to be operated to unlock said auxiliary bolt, and adapted to engage said casing and hold said auxiliary bolt in unlocked position, subject to automatic release by said crank pin. 18. In a changeable combination key lock, t 1e combination with a casing; of a locking bolt; a guard lever arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism; a guard tumbler arranged to hold and release said guard lever in accordance with the position thereof, and controllable by a key; auxiliary lock mechanism in said casing, including a movable bolt, a lever in cooperative relation with said auxiliary bolt; and a latch extending in position to be operated to unlock said auxiliary bolt, and adapted to hold said auxiliary bolt in unlocked position, subject to automatic release by said guard lever.
19. In a change-able combination key lock, the combination with a casing; of a locking bolt; a guard lever arranged to cooperate with auxiliary lock mechanism; a guard tumbler arranged to hold and release said guard lever in accordance with the position thereof, and controllable by a key; auxiliary lock mechanism in said casing, including a lever, and a latch pivoted to that auxiliary lever, extending in position to be unlocked, and adapted to hold said auxiliary lock mechanism in unlocked position.
20. In a changeable combination lock, the combination with a casing; of a movable locking bolt; a tumbler arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; a reciprocatory and-oscillatory change plate, carrying said tumbler and movable to change the lock combination; an element stationary in said casing arranged to engage said change plate in one position of the latter; and means arranged to oscillate and thus release said change plate.
21. In a lock, the combination with a movable bolt; of a lever operatively connected with said bolt; a latch pivoted on said lever and arranged to detain said lever in unlocked position; and means arranged to release said latchand permit said bolt to be locked.
