' PORTABLE LOADING DEVICE.
Application filed. August 20, 1924. Serial No. .733,140.
' useful Improvements in a Portable Loading shoulders of the personsloading Device, of .which't-he'following is a specification. I
This invention relates to new and-useful improvements in loading devices and has for its principalobject to provide a simple and 'eflicient means whereby railroad ties may be loaded on a railway car without necessitating the carrying of the ties on the the car as is now done.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. loading device of the above 1116I1 tioned character, which may be readily and easily placed in position for use so that railroad ties maybe placed on the table of the loading device and moved onto the railway car by an endless conveyor in an efficient and positive manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a portable loading device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong'and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved invention, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof with the endless belt removed.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1.
designates the base of my improved loading device and adapted to be rotatably supported thereon by means of the turn table designated generally by the numeral 2 is the platform For the purpose of holding the platform 3 in vertical alignment with the base 1, the forward end of the platform has its side member provided with the cut away portion 5 for engagement with the lips 6 supported on the cross piece 7, the latter being supported on the base ladjacent the forward end thereof in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawing.
Extending upwardly from the platform 3 and supported by the-side members 4 there of are the standards '8 and 9 respectively.
The standards 8 are disposed at an angle with respect to the platform while the rear standards 9 extend vertically in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1. Mounted on the upper ends of the standards 8 and.
9 is the upwardly inclined-frame 10, the forward end thereof being supported by the upper ends of the inclined standards 8. The upper ends of the vertical standards 9 are receivable-in suitable out out portions 11 provided in the outer faces of the sides 12 and 13 respectively ofthe frame 10 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2.
A table such as illustrated at 1 1 is supported on the forward end of the frame 10 and is also further supported by the upper ends of the inclined standards 8 and the purpose thereof will be presently described.
A guide roller. 15 has its ends journaled in the supporting blocks 16 on which the table 14 is mounted, the supporting blocks being secured to the forward end of the side bars 12 and 13 of the frame 10.
The inner opposed faces of the side bars 12 and 13 of the frame 10 are provided with notches 17 in the upper portions thereof and the same are arranged in spaced relation and are adapted to receive the ends of the rollers 18 in the manners clearly illustrated in the Figure 2. Any number of rollers may be provided as is desired and I do not wish to limit myself to the particular number of rollers which may be used for the purposes of carrying out the objects for which the same are designated. The roller 19 which is mounted in the forward end of the frame has one end thereof extending through the side bar 12 and the upper portion of the adjacent standard 8 and carries thereon the pulley wheel 20. The purpose of this construction is to rovide a means whereby the roller 19 may e rotated so as to cause the operation of the endless belt 21 which is trained over the rollers 18 and the roller 19 in the manner illustrated in Figure 1. Any suitable source of power may be provided for operating the pulley 20 whereby to transmit motion to the roller 19 for operating the endless conveyor belt 21.
In operation, the device is placed in such position as to have the inclined rear end of the frame 10 disposed adjacent the open side of the railwaycar on which the railroad ties are to be loaded. The ties arethen taken and placed on the table H by means of the guide roller 15, the same will be moved onto the endless conveyor belt 21 and as the same operates over the rollers 18 and 19, the railroad ties Will be discharged from the endless conveyor into the railway car where they may be placed in position for transportation.
The simplicity of my device Will save considerable time andlabor in loading railway cars with railroad ties for shipment and will further be positive and efficient in its operation. The simplicity of my device enables the same to be constructed at a very low cost and will further be strong and durable.
The provision of the turn table 2 enables the platform, and the table and endless conveyor supported thereon to be moved to any desired position for facilitating the handling of the railroad ties in loading the same on a railway car.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to-beunderstood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A loading device of the character described including a base, a platform, a turn table structure between the base and the platform, standards extending upwardly from the intermediate portionof the platform and inclined rearwardly, other'standards extending upwardly from the'rear end of the platform, a frame having its forward end supported on the first mentioned standards and its intermediate portion on the second mentioned standard so as to be inclined upwardly and rearwardly, a table on the forward end of said frame, an endless conveyor mounted in said frame and extending rearwardly from under said table, and a guide roller in the frame and disposed between the table and said conveyor and rearwardly of the table.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
