COMBINED PILLGV AND CI-IEST SUPPOBTER.
Application. filed January 11, 1921. Serial No. 438,500.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Amos 0. DARLING, citizen of the United States, residing at Tilton, in the county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pillow and ,Chest Supporter, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My present invention relates to a com bined pillow and chest supporter and has for its principal object the provision of such a device adapted for supportingja recumbent person with his or her head in a slightly raised position to overcome insomnia and to diminish blood pressure on the brain and other vital organs, thereby acting as a curative agent in cases of high blood pressure, and other afflictions of similar character affecting the state of mind or brain of a person so afliicted. The invention will also be used as a curative agent in diseases of the throat and lungs as it removes blood pressure from these organs, thereby eliminating to a great degree the persistent and distressing cough which accompanies them.
Another object consists of a device of the character described adapted for supporting the chest and head in slightly inclined position with a space left betweenthe pillow and pad whereby the person may easily breathe, it being understood that the person willbe positioned with his or herface down, with the chest support beneath the chest. It will also be understood, that if desired, just as sleep approaches, one may remove the support frombeneath the head and chest.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear asthe description of my invention proceeds, the invention resides in the novel details of construction, and arrangement of parts, more clearly illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it willbe understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. l is a perspective view of the com bined pillow and support.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing my combined pillow and chest support upon the usual bed or mattress, the recumbent person being shown in dotted line.
In the drawings, A represents the mattress of a bed of the usual construction, and 13 proceeds.
The upper surface of the support 2 is inclined downwardly from the rear edge 4: to the forward edge 5, so that the same may be readily positioned beneath the chest and support the person in a'slightly inclined position.
Both the pillow l and the support'2 will preferably be constructed of a casing of fabric, similar to the fabric used in the construction of mattresses and the like and the casings will be stuffed with the usual upholstering fillings. Also, if desired, the casings may be formed of rubber or any. other material stuffed with any suitable, fillings. It will be appreciated that if it is desired, the casing might be filled with air or water to the desired pressure.
As. stated in the objects of my invention, my combined pillow and support is. for use in supporting the person in a slightly inclined position to diininishblood pressure from the brain or other organs and may also be used for overcoming insomnia. 1 The chest support 2 will be placed beneath the chest and the forehead of the recumbent person will be placed upon the pillow 1, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The space between the pillow 1 and the support 2 formed by the connecting strip 3 will allow the person to breathe easily. The connecting strip 3 allows the support to be folded upon the pillow 1 when the device is not in use, and as a whole, my invention goes forward to make up a device of the character described which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be readily positioned upon or removed from the bed. I find, in practice, that a person using the device is usually conscious of the fact that he is about to fall asleep and will then raise his head sufficiently to allow the removal of the device. While the strip 3 is shown as a single piece of material, it will ,be understood that I might equally as well 1. A device of the character describedcomprising a pillow to receive the forehead of a reclining person, a support for the chest of the person, and a flexible strip connecting the lower edges of the pillow and support, the adjacent edges of the pillow and support being normally spaced apart to form a breathing opening to receive the face of the'person and of such rigidity that the face of a person lying face downward uponthe pillow and support will be supported a substantial distance above the connecting strip to permit free breathing;
2. A device of the character described comprising a pillow to receive the forehead of a reclining person, a support for the chest of the person, and a flexible strap connecting the lower edges of the pillow and support, the adjacent edges of the pillow and support being normally spaced apart to form a breathing opening to receive the face of the person but adapted to be folded one upon the other, the pillow and support being of such rigidity that the face of a person lying face downward upon the pillow and support will be supported a substantial distance above the connecting "strap to permit free breathing, the upper surface of the pillow being flat and the upper surface of the support being downwardly inclined from that edge adj acent the pillow, the upper edge of the'support adjacent the pillow being on substantially the same plane as the upper surface of the pillow when the pillow and support are in their normally spaced position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
