DONALD D. MACKAY, OE WEiTEsToNE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGGBEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 154,263, dated August'lB, 1874 z application filed May 14, 1874.
To all whom .it may concern Be it known that I, DONALD D. MAcKAY, of Whitestone, county of Queens and State of New York, have invented anImproved Egg- Beater, of which the following is a specification This invention has reference to that class of egg and cake beaters in which areemployed two beater-frames revolving in Opposite directions, and it has for its object to simplify the construction of a beater constructed upon this'principle, in order to render the same more effective in operation and durable in use.
The invention consistsin an egg-beater comprising a pair of reversely-revolving beaterframes, and a surrounding frame or yoke which is fitted loosely on the main beatershaft, and provided at its lower end with'a step for the reception of said shaft, the loose frame being so contrived that it may be held in a stationary position, so as to permit the beater-frames to revolve within the saine, or it may be caused to revolve with the beaters. In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a vertical side elevation, partly in section, of an egg-beater constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. '3 is a detail top view of the revolving beaters and surrounding frame.
. The handle A, which comprises the station-l ary top portion of the beater, is formed with a hand-loop and a vertical shank portion which is bent in an outward direction so as to clear the driving-shaft, -and to form top and bottom bearings,o1 a2, for said shaft. The lower horizontal extensionof the handle is provided with aspindle or journal for the reception of a large bevel or hand-Wheel, C, which meshes into a small bevel-Wheel, D, secured tothe shaft B. E designates a yoke or frame which is applied loosely to the shaft B, and provided with a step, e, at its lower end for the reception ofthe shaft. Said yoke or frame is composed of two vertical side bars, a lower horizontal connecting-bar, and a narrow top plate throughy Which the shaft B passes. Immediately below the point where the shaft passes through the yoke, there is keyed a small bevel-wheel, I, which meshes into a larger Wheel, G, turning on a horizontal aXis in the yoke E, said Wheel G in turn gearing into a wheel, J, which is secured to a sleeve, H, turning on the shaft B, and prevented from moving vertically thereon by an enlargement 'of the shaft. The shaft B carries the stirrers or beater-fingers M, made of wire or sheet metal, and curving in a downward direction from said shaft so as to revolve on opposite sides of or between the beater-fingers N secured to the driving-sleeve H. The frame or yoke surrounding the beaters or stirrers, and having the shaft B journaled in the same, is provided with projections or spurs f on its lower cross-bar, so as to enable it to be forced against the dish or vessel in which the beating operation takes place, for retaining the yokek in a fixed position. By turning the wheel C through the medium of a hand-crank, the shaft B, together with its stirrer, will be revolved in one direction, and the sleeve H with Aits beater Will be revolved in an opposite direction, thus causing a thorough agitation and commingling of the mass which is being operated upon. rlhe reverse action of the stirrers takes place only when the surrounding yoke is retained in a stationary position, this being due to the fact that the wheel mounted on a clasp or small frame surrounding the yoke serves then to revolve the sleeve H independently of the main shaft.
By holding the yoke free from contact with the dish or vessel, both beaters, together with the yoke, will be rotated together in the same direction. The latter mode of operation may be preferred in certain instances to perform a particular kind of Work.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
` The egg-beater herein described, comprising the reversely-revolving beaters or stirrers M N, shaft B, sleeve H, loose or independent yoke or frame E, handle A, and bevel-gearing C D I G J, all constructed and relatively arranged to operate in the manner set forth.
DONALD D MACKAY.
