TALKING MAN IKIN.

Be it known that I, EDUARDO EOHEVARRIA, citizen of Mexico, residing at Granite City, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Talking. Manikins, of
vwhich the following is. a specification.
This invention relates enerally to novelty .111 store windows 7 ticular-reference to a manikin arranged in connection with a talking machine to have the sound conducted through a tube that leads to the mouth of the manikin, the invention having for an object the provision of a novel device of this sort that is provided with means whereby the mouth of the manikin may move as if in talking or singing, and one or more of the limbs make appropriate gestures.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing. and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal-sectional view I taken on theline 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, the reference numeral indicates-a box or cabinet on topof which-a manikin 11 is fixed. In the box 10 is an electric motor 12 having a worm pinion 13 on its shaft 14 that meshes .with a worm gear 15 on a. vertical shaft 16 thatjhasa turntable 17 fixed on its u per end, this turntable being a'da ted to ave suitable disk records placed t ereon. The records are engaged by the needle of an ordinary sound box 20 thatis mounted on a tone arm 21 that has a pivotal connection with a tube 22 that leads upward through the hollow body of the manikin and is directed forwardly at its upperj end as at 22' to terminate adjacent the mouth of the manikin. The lower jaw 23 of the manikin is hinged to the head .as at 24'to swing in a vertical plane, while a rubber strip 25 may cover the space between the neck and the botmanner simulating the movement of a person speaking or singing I provide the following means. Extending upward through the manikin is a second tube 28 of larger diameter than the tube and enclosing the latter. This tube is formed with an enlarged lower end 28' in which is mounted a horizontally disposedhelical fan 29 that may be supported by a suitable bracket 30. This fan is fixed on the upper end of a vertical shaft 31 that has. a bevel gear 32 fixed to its lower end, this gear meshing with a like gear 33 on the lower end of the motor shaft 14. Extending across the tube 28, just above the fan 29 is a partition element 35 formed with a series of slotted apertures 36. Slidably mounted on this partition is a valve plate 37 having like slotted apertures 33 than are adapted to be moved into and out of registry with the apertures 36 in the partition. Fixed to one edge of'this plate 37 is a rod or stem 39 that projects from the tube and has a slot and pin connection as at 40 with the upper end of a bell crank lever 41 that is fulcrumed as at 42 in the box 10 and has a roller 43 on its other end that engages a cam 44 fixed on a stub shaft 45 to which is also fixed a worm gear 46 that meshes with a worm pinion 47 .on the turntable shaft 16.
A coiled tension spring 48 is connected at one end'to the lever 41 and at its opposite ends to a suitable fixed partand serves to keep the roller 43 engaged with the cam 44. Fixed to the jaw 23, adjacent its pivotal point, and projecting rearwardly across the neck of the manikin is a rigid flap 50 that has an opening therein to accommodate the tube 22. This flap may if desired be weighted as at 51 to act as a counterbalance to hold the jaw member raised. An operative connection may be effected between the flap 50 and one of the arms, indicated at 54, of the manikin by means of a link 55 that is attached at its upper end to the flap and extends downward to connect at its lower end to an arm-56 fixed on a stub shaft 57 on which the arm 54 of the manikin is fixed, this shaft being suitably mounted in the body of the manikin. The cabinet 10 may be provided with doors 60 for access to the mechanism therein.
As will be apparent from the above description the cam 44 will control the movement of the valve plate 37, and when the latter is moved to open position the blast of air driven by the fan 29 through the tube 28 will cause the flap 50 to swing upwardand the jaw 23 to swing downward,
