E. SCHERL AUTOMATIC VALVE CONTROLLING DEVICE Filed Nqv. 19. 1924 INVENTOR 1min/Ml ATTORNEY WHT! lll
lif-
Patented June 16, 1.9.25.
f UNITED STATESg EDMUND scHERL, or NEW YORK, N.'Y.
AUTOMATIC VALVE-CONTROLIING DEVICE.
Application iled November 19, 1924. Serial No. 750,741.
To all whom it may concern:
Be vit known ythat I, EDMUND SGHERL, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing at New York, in the county of the Bronx and State of New York, have invented: certain new and useful Improvements inAutomatic Valve-ControllingDevices, of which the following is a specification. o
This invention relates to devices for automatically operating the valve of heating appliances and has as its principal object the provision of means for closing thel gas inlet valve of heating apparatus, as stoves and the like, when the same has Aattained adefinite degree of heat.`
Another purpose is [Sto provide a device,
operated bytheiknown expansion of metals lfor actuating afpsupply valve into a closed position.
A further aim is to provide such devices in formsthat may be readily applied to exs isting structures as well as at' their initial installation.
These several aims and objects are accomplished by the operation of Well known physical laws as applied to a novel con struction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a heater showing the application ofthe embodimeiit of the invention. Y
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same, parts being broken away.
Figure 3 is a similar view of the same in another position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse Apartial* sectional view of portions thereof.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a part thereof. Referring more in detail to the drawing,
which represents a conventional type of gas heater or stove, the numeral designates a base on which is a stand 11 having a raised bead 12, circumjacent a level bottom 13.
A hollow cylindrical body 14 rests on the base, within Vthe bead 12 and at the top of the body is a cap ring 15 having a bead 16 fitting the cylinder and a raised bead 17 which acts as a guide kfor an ornamental cover 18 provided with aknob 19 for convenience in removal.
The ring 15 is provided with a lnest of plates 20 which upon being removed permits placing of yvessels of various kinds d1- rectly over the stove to be subjected to its heat.
A supply of gas is delivered through the y pipe 22 and controlled by the valve 23, the operation of which will be again referred to.. A continuation of the pipe 22 is provided with an elbow 24 in which is a stand pipe 25 passing through the stand flooring Y outletsk or burner openings 29 are formed in the coil through which the'gas passes into the chamber 30 inthe body 14, these jets being ignitedwhen in operation.
Rigidly attached tothe exterior of the body 14,I to 'extend at a spaced distance therefrom, is a vertical bracket 31 of any desired' conguration, this bracket carrying the` valve actuating parts now to be described.-
A helically coiled wire 32 is disposed transversely across the chamber 30, one end of the coil having a fixed collar 33 abutting the body wall, the extending end of the wire being provided with a nut 34 by which the collar is firmly clamped and prevented from turning.
The other end of the wire passes freely out through an opening in the body to another larger fixed collar or flange 35 which abuts the inner side of a portion of the bracket 31, through which a shouldered portion 36 of the coil passes to rotate therein, a continuation 37 of the coil being fixed in the hub of a lever 38, and clamped rigidly by the nut 39 on the threaded extremity 40 of the coil.
Pivotally connected with the outer, free end of the lever 38 is a pitman or link 41, its lower end being pivotally engaged with an arm 42 of a bell-crank lever, pivoted at 5 coiled tension spr-ing 5l carried by an arm of the bracket 31.
A capped tubular extension 52 of the bracket 3l, carries a plunger 53 in register With the spindle 46', the plunger being of larger diameter than the spindle and having` a bevelled inner end adapted to enter an opening 54 in rthe plate link 50 f'due to the effect of a compression spring 55 in the extension 52.
In operation, the gas jets 29 being lit and the valve `opened 'by manually depressing the lover 48, the stove will `be heated to the required extent.
vShould the temperature rise above such degree, fthe `rWire `coil 32 will expand, fand as one end is firmly anchored, the other end Willtivist in themanner of a torsion sprl-ing. actuating the ilever 3S, pitman 41 and bellcran'k lever, forcing the spindle 46 against the end of the plunger, displacing ift oin the opening 54, whereupon the spring 51 acts through the links 54 and 49 to -move the lever 48 so- -as :to close the passage through the valve 23 and Icut 'off the gas Supply- Obviously the coil 32 zacts as a thermo'- static element anfd takes 'considerable time for its operation, during' which the stove set forth the manner of its construction, ap-
plicatfion an'd yope-ration, what I 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:-
ll. The combination with a gas heater and 'a supply .pipe yleading thereto, said pipe being provided With a valve, a lever for operating said valve, a spring drawn link acting on said lever to close the valve, a plunger engaging said 'link to retain the valve open, a thermostatic torsion element in said heater, and mfeans Vactuated by said e'lernerrtJ u-pon the accession of heat to displace said plunger and permit the valve to clo'se.
v2. The combination with a `gas "heater and a supply pipe leading thereto, said pipe being provided with a valve, Aa lever for operating said valve, a spring drawn link acting on said lever to close the valve, a plunger engaging said link to retain the valve open, a tlrerinostatic torsion element in `said heater, one end of said 'element being Xed and the other rotatable, link connected levers movable by the action ot said member, anda sliding-'spindle operated by sa'i'dY levers to displace said plunger whereby ythelink is freed and the spring permitted to `closesaid valve. a
In Witness whereof I have afiixed my`s1gnature. f
