IMPROVEMENT IN SHIPS PUMPS. I

the pumps now in use for raising and discharging Water from ships, and for other purposes. The invention will first be fully described,
and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a vertical section of the pump. Fig. 2
is a vertical section on the line as a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail, showing the conical tube in perspective.

This is a double-cylinder liftingpump, the pistons of which areoperated by means of levers in a vibrating socket-beam, to which the piston-rods are attached.
AA are the cylinders; B B, the pistons; O O, the piston-rods; and D, the lever-beam, which is vibrated 0n the central pin E. F is base of the pump, upon which the cylinders rest. G is the inductiQnpipe; H, the air-chamber. I is the reservoir at the foot of each cylinder. J is a conical tube at the foot of each cylinder, the lower ends of which extend down into the reservoirs, and are always immersed in water. These conical tubes have (each) a surrounding flange, K, by means of which they are supported in thebase on the inwardly-projecting ledges L, as seen in Fig. 1, and are held in place by the cylinders, with packing m between, to secure water-tight joints. N N are the drop-valves of the cylinders. These valves are fitted to and dropped into the conical tubes J J. Orepresents a bail on each of these valves,
by means of which they may be lifted out through the cylinder by taking out the central pin E and removing the pistons. In pumps of ordinary size the hand may be inserted for this purpose, or they may be lifted out with a hook, as may be desired, without disturbing a bolt or nut.
To prevent freezing, the water is withdrawn from the reservoir by means of small screwplugs I. The water in the reservoir (except when drawn off by removing the plugs P) always stands above the lower ends of the conical tubes J, and serves as a constant priming, the pistons always bringing water at the first strike.
Q is a rubber cushion on each of the cylinders, on which the lever-beam I) impinges when the pump is worked. These cushions are confined in sockets R, and serve to deaden the noise and ease the shock for men working the pump. S is the discharge-pipe.
These pumps may be made of any required size, and be placed in any desired position for raising and discharging bilge-water, or for other purposes on ship-board, or to be used elsewhere for all the purposes for which they may be adapted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination of the conical tubes, having flange K, and supported on ledge L, with the reservoir and induction-pipe, arranged as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
