Figure 2 is :i View partly in Section eind partly in elevation, looking at the fastening devices in a line parallel to the plane of the closed doors.
Similar characters of reference refer to Simile-r ports in both o1a the figuren.
ln the drawing, reference numeral 3 illustrates u cer provided with :L door-opening adopted to be closed by doorS-'-Jl, cach ot which is mounted by ineens o'lg'y the usual, o1 :my suitable, hinges indicated et 5--5. rlhe doors herein illustrated Iere of type coninumly employed in connection with refrigerutor curs and hence need not be described in det-eil.
mrried by one of the doors 1, being the door which is adapted to `hold the other in closed poeition, is L pair of brackets (S-6, cach of which is preferably formed in one piece Ji'roin malleable iron. One of these bruckct is located adjacent 'the vupper edge und free vertical edge. of the door, and the other bracket is located adjacent the lower edge und ilrec vertical edge lof the door. Aside :from the fact that they are reversely arranged, the two brackets 6 are identical. llzrch of these brackets comprisce the bzuse portion 7, which is Secured to thc door by suitable, attachment nieuws illustrated ut 8, the central. portion olt the scid buse i being,` bulged toward the `door, as is most clcurljl illuetruted at 9 in liig. 2, the door being; cut nwuy to accommo- .dzltc thc seid 'bulge t). lf decir-ed, the 'bracket (i muy comprise the I )ortion 1 which extends partially across und has its upper sur fece flush withthe .upper odge of the door, :Le shown in Fig. 2.
llzich of the doorrcm'ried brzickete G cleo comprises i pair et' spaced pzufnllel euro 1l, which pivotelly Support :i cuni-hook l2 which is adopted to lie-swung around an, axis parallel to the plone of the door by ineens of, operating mechanism prceently 'to be described. Y lt Will ne noticed that each of `tine czii'ndloolts l2 unpriees :t concave cuni surface l and o, nivex com surface 314;.
Secured to tb or irulne `by attachment ug so located' tliet they lie devices l5, and be l oi'lgeccnt the' dotucfirried breclteti.; At when lill) the doors are inclosed position, are brackets 16, each ot which is preferably termed 1n one piece of malleable iron, and is provided with a pair of outwardly projecting;4 spaced ing 22V adapted to receive a parallel ears, between which is pivotally mounted a roller 1T. Each of the brackets 16 and its roller 17 constitutes a keeper which cooperates with the adjacent camliook l2 to torce the doors 4 tightly closed and there hold them and to start the opening' oi the door by which the cani-hooks are c: Tied.
l shall now briefly describe a type of operatinpr mechanism which may be employed in connection with the cam-hooks hereinbet'ore described. This operating mechin nisni need not neeessarilv dill'er in any substantial respect troni similar mechanisms now commonly in use in connection with refrigerator ycar doors. The operating' mechanism shown in the drawings comprises a. bar 18 which is pivoted to the door and is adapted to be swung relative thereto in a plane parallel lo the plane ot` the door. Pivoted to and extending upwardly troni one end of 'the bar 1S is a lilik 1S), and pivoted to the bar 18 near the other end thereo't, and projectingdownwardly ther'etrom, is a corresponding link 20. Also carried by the last-mentioned end of the bar 18 is an operatingl handle 21 provided with an openloop or staple 23 carried by the handle. lf desired, the handle 21 may comprise a hook or keeper 24, which is adapted to engage through the.
Vloop or staple 23 when the handle is in the position shown in the drawings. lt will, ot course, be understood that the handle 21 may be utilized to move the pivoted bar 1S and its associated links 10 and 2t) troni their full line positions to their dotted line positions (Fig. 1). lt will be noted that the links 19 and 2() are respectively pivoted to' the upper and lower cam-hooks 12.
ln the drawings the doors are illustrated in closed position with the several elements of the door fastener in their locking positions. liVhen the doors are to be opened, the lever 21 is operated to swing),` the bar 18 and the links 19 and 2O to the dotted line positions illustrated in Fig. 1. Such move ment of the links 19 and 20 swings the camhooks 12 around their respective axesdis engaging the earnA surfaces 13 of the camhooks from the rollers 17 and causing the cam` surfaces 14 of the cani-hooks to engage the rear portions of the brackets 16 to start the opening,r ot' the door by which the Gaim hooks are carried. lt will be noted that. the cam-hooks may be retracted to positionls, where they lie within the ripper and lower; margins of the door. When the doors are to be -fastened, the handle 21 is operated to.
cause the cani-hooks to engage behind the rollers 17, the cam surfaces' 13 of the cam` hooks cooperating with the rollers to torce the doors tightly closed and there hold them.
Having thus illustrated and described a pre tei-red embodiment ot my invention, l do not limit myself to the specific construction and arrangement ot' parts herein shown and described, but wish to claim all equivalent constructions trilling` within the terms or spirit. of the appended claims.
lllhat l claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States, is:
1. The combination with a car havin? a door hinged to swinev around a vertical axis, cam hooks pivotally mounted upon the door at its ipper and lower edges andv adapted to move relatively to the dooi""a1'ound axes parallel with the plane ol the door, car carried keepers disposed aboreand below the door opening, and exterior ot' the ear surface, said keepers comprising portions behind which said cam hooks may engage, and means for swingingA said cam hooks outwardly to engage behind said keeper portions when the door is to be fastened and 'or retractinpY said c'ani hooks when the door is to be tintas/tened. Y
2. The combination. with a car. having a door hinged to swing around a vertical axis, cam 4hooks pivotally n'iounted upon the door atits upper and lower edges and adapted to more relatively to the door aronn'd axes.
parallel with the plane of the door, car carried keepers disposed above and below the door opening, and exterior of the car surface, said keepers comprising portions behind which said earn hooks may engage, and means for swinging' said cani hooks out wardly to engage behind said keeper portions when .the door is to be fastened and tor retracting'said eaxn hooks when the door is to be untastened, said means comprising a member pivoted centrally to the door and provided with an actuating handle, link members directly connectingh the ends et said centrally pivoted member with the cam hooks, whereby upon actuation ottlie han` dle the said link members are moved in opposite directions to control said fam hooks. l
3. ln combination with a door, a bracket mounted at one edge of the door, a cani hook pivotally mounted in said bracket for swinging movement around an axis parallel with the plane ot' the door, a second bracket mounted adjacent the door opening, a roller carried by said second bracket, and means carried by the door for movingsaid Carr.
hooks outwardly to engage behind said roll-,
