Moron;
Application filed November 28, 11923 Serial no. $77,493.
To (slime/torn its may concern Be it; \known that I, Enmoo Rn, a subject of-the .King of Italy,-residing"at Vinelanchi in,thecounty of Gun'iberlandand Stateof Newwlersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .h lotors, 1 of which thewfollowing is -a speeification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, This invention relates to certain improvementstin.motors and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in operating the treadles of the operating mechanism of a player piano. 7
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved motor of this general character which isof a spring type and wherein the operating shaft has asso ciated therewith a plurality of spring oper ated members whereby the device can be constructed in a manner to occupy a minimum of space yet at the same time possess the efficiency desired in a device of this kind. V e
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangementof the several parts of my improved motor whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a motor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 ofFigure 1; V
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken longitudinally of Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes a housing of suitable dimensions and which is supported at its opposite ends by the pillars or posts P whereby the device may be readily disposed V over the treadles T for the operating mechanism of a player piano; The posts or pillars P have associated therewith the casters C whereby the device in its entirety may function.
beireadilyamovedinto or outof working POSll'lOH with: respect to the .treadles rT as may be required. a
Rotatably supported within [the housing 1 H is a crank shaft 1 which has ioperativelyi engaged therewith the 1 pitmen :2 which 1 are 1 adapted to be iconnected :in anycpreferred manner with the treadlesT 'soithat upon rotation of the shaft 1 the treadles .;T,will be. operated}. in zaamanner to; effect the dz.- sired functioning of the operating mecha- .nism of the player piano and without the necessity. of the treadles being worked by the'feet as is now done.
Also supported within'the housing H is a second shaft comprising a plurality of sections 3and mounted on each of said sections is a gear wheel 4 in mesh with the pinion 5 mounted on the shaft 1 so that upon rotation of any one of the gears 4 the shaft 1 will be rotated.
Each of the gears 1 is loosely mounted on the shaft 1 but provided with a pawl or dog 6 associated with the ratchet wheel 7 fixed to the shaft 1. gears 1 offer no obstruction to the rotation of the shaft 1 but upon any one of the gears becoming inactive, the desired rotation of the shaft 1 will be affected.
The gears 4 are also each loosely mounted on a shaft section 3 and is provided with a dog or pawl 8 coacting with the ratchet wheel 9 carried by the shaft section 3. Associated with the gear 4: and the shaft section 8 is a spring 10. 1
Each of the gears 4 is normally maintained inactive by the pivot dog 11 normally held in looking engagement with the spring by the spring pressed pin 12. A rock lever 1d has one end portion overlying the dog 11 and its opposite end portion dis posed over the periphery of an adjacent spring 10 so that as said spring 10 unwinds and is substantially completely run down, said spring will contact with the lever 1 1- and rock the" same. in a direction to release the dog 11 whereupon the next succeeding spring and gear 1 will be caused to The first lever 14:, however, eX- tends eXteriorly of the housing H and is adapted to be engaged by a finger or the like to initially start the motor.
Any means, as generally indicated at 15, may be employed for winding the springs it is also to be understood that the en- By this means the idle 7 gagement of the pitmen 2 with the treadles T is detachable.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a motor constructed in accordance with my invention of shaft sections rotatably supported adjacent to the shaft, a gear loosely mounted on each of the shaft sections, a gear loosely mounted on the first named shaft with which said gear of the shaft section meshes, a spring associated With each shaft section and gear thereon for rotating the gear, coacting means carried by the shaft and each of the gears mounted thereon to cause said gear and shaft to rotate in unison in one direction, means for holding the gears on the shaft sections against rotation, the spring associated with one gear operating when unwound to release the holding means of the succeeding gear.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature.
