Original app1ication filed. July 7, 1921 Serial No. 483,067. Divided and. this application filed November 17, 1924:. Serial NO. 750,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GUNNAR CHRISTIAN Eksrnoai and GUS'I'AF j-nsrnoar, subjects of the King of Sweden, and residents of Stockholm, Sweden, and BROR ANDnRs EMIL JOHNSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Appelviken, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Means for Packing Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
When cigarettes provided with print, such as the name of afirm, trade mark, the name of the cigarette, etc., are charged in boxes, packets or the like, the cigarettes are so placed, that the said print is turned upward in the box. lVhcn cigarettes are packed, the cross section of which is oval, the cigarettes besides are so placed in the boxes, that the same, having the print turned upward partially cover one another. The packing o' such cigarettes hitherto has been efl ected 1nanually, because thecigarettes in ordinary packing machines have an opportunity of turning, so that they would not get the desired position in the boxes. In order that the cigarettes may be mechanically placed into the packets 1n a predetermined position it is absolutely necessary that the cigarettes, while transported from the cigarette making. machine to the packing device have no occasion to turn. For the transporting of the cigarettes to the packing device carriers are known, in which the cigarettes are held in a distinct position and from which they are positively transmitted into the packet, but hitherto the cigarettes have been delivered to the said carrier from a magazine or in such manner that the cigarettes are able to turn while delivered. For that reason the packing of cigarettes into the packets in a predetermined position hitherto has been effected manually.
This invention relates to a device which positively transmits the cigarettes respec tively from the cigarette producing members of the machine to the said carrier and positively places the cigarettes into the holders of the said carrier, so that the cigarettes never have any occasion to turn. In
accordance with the invention the said carrier is flexible and after the cigarettes have the carrier may, if necessary, be effected by one or more conveyers provided with pockets or holders for keeping the cigarettes in fixed position, which conveyers permit the inspection of the cigarettes The accompanying drawing shows diagrammatically a form of the invention.
The means shown'is adapted to co-operate with a cigarette making machine of the known type, in which the cigarettes are cut from a string. The cross section of the cigarettes is oval. The cigarettes cut from the string arrive on a table 1 in a predetermined position with the seam turned in a. definite position, the same for all cigarettes. A carrier for the cigarettes is moved past the table. The said carrier consists of a band 2, for instance of steel, which is pro- 7 vided with ribs 3 of sheet metal, forming pockets for the cigarettes. The band 2 is wound round a roller 1, from which it passes round a drum 5, located at the table 1, a guide roller 6 and is then wound round a roller 7. While the band 2 passes round the drum 5, cigarettes are moved from the table 1 into the pockets of the band 2 by an oscillating arm 8, so that the pockets are successively charged with cigarettes. In order to retain the cigarettes inthe pocket-s one or more endless threads 9, for instance, are provided, extending along the band 2 from the drum '5 to the roller 7, guided by rollers 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14:. The guide rollers 10 and 13 rotate in stationary bearings, while the roller 12 is carried by swingable arms 15, so that the space between the roller 12 and the roller 7 may be increased, while the band is wound round the latter. The guide roller 14L is journalled in swingable arms 16 and is acted upon by a weight 17 keeping the threads 9 in tight condition. The said band 2 is guided in any suitable manner for instance by its edges sliding in grooves 18, provided between the rollers etc. The driving mechanism may be of any suitable construction and is not shown.
hen the band has been charged with cigarettes, it may be transported to a cigarette packing machine. The introducing of the cigarettes into the boxes, packets, etc, may be eli'ected according as the band is uncoiled. A chain provided with pockets may, evidently, be substituted for the band. An endless band or chain may also be used, passing round guide rollers.
Other positively operating means than those illustrated in the drawing may, evidently, be used for carrying out the invention in question. The present invention may be used also for packing cigarettes having no print and other staitshaped articles.
6 claim:
1. In a device for transmitting cigarettes 'from a cigarette making machine to a packing device the provision of means, which positively transfer the c1garettes from the cigarette producing members or the said machine to a flexible carrier and positively place the same into the said carrier, and a member, on which the said carrier, containing cigarettes, is wound.
2. In a device for transmitting cigarettes from a cigarette making machine to a pack ing device the provision of means, which positively transfer the cigarettes from the cigarette producing members of the said machine to a flexible carrier and positively places the same into the said carrier, a mein ber, on which the said carrier, containing cigarettes is wound, and a number of flexible members passing along necessary portions of the flexible carrier and retaining the cigarettes in the carrier.
3. In a device for transmitting cigarettes, oval in cross section, from a cigarette making machine to a packing device, the combination with a carrier, provided with holders, in which the cigarettes are held in a definite position and by means of which they are moved to a packing device, of a substantially horizontal, stationary support, on which each cigarette from the cigarette producing members of the said machine separately is delivered in a predetermined position with its seam turned in a definite direction the same for all cigarettes, means for moving the said carrier past the said support and a member positively moving the cigarette transversely and sliding on the said support into the holders of the carrier.
In witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands.
