Henri-mar, citizens ot-the United States, residing in the cityotv Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles and State of (laliitornia, have inventcdcertain new and useful improvements in MateriaLCompressing ltlaehines, of which the 'l ollowingis a specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements ininachines at the character referred to, and asshown and described in U. S. Letters Patentiiumber 1,260,514, issued to said Robert ii. lolelnan, March 26th, 1918. The object of the present invention is to provide certain improvements in the mechanism. which l deternnnes the length of the corn pressed article, and trips, or controls the mechanism which cuts, ties and? discharges the finished article from the-machine.
In order to describe our invention, we have shown on the accompanying three sheets of drawings so much otthe general machine asis necessaryto illustratethe invention of the present application and its connection to the ln' aehine. proper, for a. description of which reference is made to the patent above referred to;

Referring now in detail to the drawings,
B. Cor- MA r7 and moreparticularly to 'Figure 1, the parts of the main machine necessary to be here referred to, comprise the two tamping bars 1--l, the machine here illustrated being duplex machine, the opposite sides of which are alike. 7
Two vertical guide bars 2 2, guide two reciprocating heads 3-3, which operate said tamping bars 1+1. Thematerial to be compressed is discharged into the hopper members 1 4, and is forced by the tainping bars l--l, down into the dies or forming members 5-5, held in the yokes 6-6, having two embracing rings, 6 -6 adapted to beheld in adjusted positions by means of a screw 7, and a lock nut 8,shown in plan view in Fig. 7. By means of these yokes, said dies, or forming members 5, 5, can be regulated as to the resistance with which they hold the stick of material being compressed herebetween, and by turning the screw 7, oneway or the. other, the pressure of said forming members on the material can be increased or reduced, and a much stronger device is provided, and all the strain is taken oft the end of the machine frame.
Mounted on the reciprocating head 3, is
an arm 9, which moves up and down with;
said .head 3, adjacent a vertically movable trip or cam bar, 10, shown in three views in Figs. 2, 3 and 4;. Set in one side otsaid trip bar 10, is a hinged latch member 10?,
the lower end of which is adapted to be moved outwardly into the path of the arm 9, by means ota spring 11, attached to a yoke member 1 2, projecting from said latch m.en1be1-,-l0, around the opposite side of said bar 10, and resting normally on a member 13, pivoted at 14, to a plate 15, secured to a part of the frame member, 16.. Said pivoted member, 13, is normally held drawn toward the cam bar 10, by a spring 17, attached thereto at 17 above the pivot point 14, and to the plate 15, as at 17", below said pivot. Pivotally mounted on one side of the member 13, as shown in Fig. 5, is an escapement member 18, the lower end 18*, ofwhich is adapted to be engaged bya pivoted lever 19, on the trip bar 10, so that when the outer end of said lever .19, is pulled downwardly, its
other end, 19, will move upwardly, and enorros ans-mans, oanrnonnrans- 3:5 GNM gage the lower end 13, of the member 18, causing said member 18, and the member 13, to be moved outwardly from under the yoke member 12, whereby its spring 11, will operate to more said yoke member, 12, toward the bar iii, and thus more the latch member 10, outwardly into the path of the arm 9, as shown at the right hand side of Fig. 1, whereupon the next upward movement of said arm 9, with the tamping head 3, will engage said latch member 10, and lift the bar 10. The lifting of said bar 10, rocks at its lower end a rocker member 20, engaged by a pin 21, on the lower end of said bar 10, but as this relates to mechanism not fully disclosed, or claimed, in this application,

said mechanism being fully disclosed and described. in the l S. iitent hereinbefore referred to.
The escapement member 18, is held in its normal position by means of a flat spring 18, On the next d wnward stroke of the arm 9, the yoke 12, engages the upper end of the member 13, and said latch member 10 is moved to its normal position in the bar 10, and out of the path of travel of said arm 9. The purpose of this trip bar 10, is to operate the rocker member 20, intermittently, and also to raise and lower a cam mechanism 10*, which operates a thrust rod (not shown) but described in the patent referred to.
A saw-like member 21 is mounted so as to engage, through a slot in the forming dies, 55, Fig. 2, with the block being formed and forced down through said dies, or holding member 55, so that the movement downwardly of the block with each tamping stroke turns said saw-like member 21 a partial turn. On the side of said sawlike member 21, are spaced pins 22, adapted to engage the free end of a lever 23, pivotally mounted at 2 1, on a bracket or hanger, 25, the opposite end of said lever 23, being pivotally connected, as at 26, to the lower end of a bar 27, sliding through a bracket 28, and the upper end of which bar 27, is provided with a pivoted dog or hook 29, hold in its normal position by means of a spring 30. A spring 31, is attached to a pin on said bar 27, and at its upper end said spring is attached to a pin 33, in the bracket 28, said spring operating to move said bar 27, upwardly as the free end of the lever 23, is released step by step by the pins 22, on the saw-like member 21, as it is about to be released in Fig. 1. As said bar 27, is thus moved upwardly by its spring 31, its hook or 29, catches on the member 19 above it, shown in Fig. 5, and the further downward movement of said bar 31, by the next pin 22, on the saw-like member 21, which has almost immediately engaged the lever will operate to pull the member 19, downwardly at its outer end, while its inner end rises and moves the member 13, and the member 13, on its pivot 14:, until the yoke 12, is again released, and the latch member 10, is moved outwardly by the spring 11, into the path of the arm 9, whereby said bar 10, is again lifted on the net up stroke of the arm 9. Also mounted on the side of the bar 10 is a bracket 34-, in position to be engaged by the arm 9, on its down stroke whereby said trip member 10, is positively moved downward to its proper stop position, Fi 2, by the reciprocating arm 9.
It will be understood that the machine is being constantly driven through the big gear G, from any suitable source of power and that the heads 33, are reciprocating the tamping bars, 11, with regular strokes, and that the briquets, or blocks, being formed and moved downwardly in the members 5-5, engage said saw-like member 21, and turn it step by step with each stroke of the tamping bar 1. This operates the trip bar 10 in the manner described, and 4 the trip bar, at its lower end, operates the rocker member 20, which in turn operates other mechanisms fully shown in the patent above referred to. The compressed ma terial is forced out through the lower ends of the forming members or dies 5, 5, into the upper ends of two breaker members or jaws, 3d, 3 1, pivoted together at their lower ends, as shown in Fig. 6, by means of pivot pins, 35, which also pivotally connect the two parts of a supporting band, 36. Said supporting band 36, is pivotally supported at its opposite sides by means of bars, 37, 37, movably anchored through the frame members, 38, 38, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6, coiled springs, 39, 39, being mounted on said bars, 37, 37, and tensioned to normally hold said supporting band 36, and said aws or breaker members, 3-1, 34, in an upper position, but permitting their movement downwardly when the said jaws or breaker members are to be closed together at their upper ends, in'the manner clearly shown in the patent referred to, only the supporting means for said jaws or breaker members being considered necessary to be shown in the present drawings. This mechanism is also shown in Fig. 1.
By means of the improvements described and shown, the machine is made more accurate in its operation and more eilicient, and the tripping action through the trip bar 10, and its connections, is more positive and certain.

3. In a machine of the character referred to, in combination, a pair of forming members, clamping means therefor comprising a yoke and two embracing rings in said yoke for holding said forming members, a screw for tightening said embracing rings in said yoke on said forming members, means for tamping loose material 1n said form ng members to form blocks, a tripping mechanism and means for actuating the same, comprising a member adapted to engage and be turned step by step by said block as it is forced downwardly, and a tripping member actuated by said member.
4. In a machine for forming blocks out of loose materials, two forming members, a
yoke around said members, embracing rings in said yoke about said forming members, a screw for regulating the tension of said embracing rings on said forming] members, means for tamping loose material in said forming members, and a tripping mechanism actuated by said tamping action comprising a saw like member engaging and being turned with each tamping movement of said block, a lever adapted to be intermittently engaged, moved and released by said saw like member, and a tripping member carried by said lever and actuated thereby, substantially as described.

In a machine of the character shown and described, in combination, forming members, means for adjustably holding them in position to receive material compressed therein, means for tamping material thereinto, tripping mechanism actuated by said tamping means, said tripping mechanism having a part engaging and operated by said compressed material, and means controlled by said tripping mechanism forreceiving the compressed material from said forming members, said means comprising two pivoted jaws, a supporting band therefor and two angularly disposed bars with springs thereon, movably anchored at their outer ends and pivotally connected at their inner, upper ends of said band, and adapted to permit the downward movement of said band and said pivoted jaws under the tension of said springs, substantially as described.

In a machine of the character shown and described, in combination, forming members to receive loose materials to be formed into blocks, means for tamping said materials thereinto, tripping mechanism actuated by the tamping means and by the compressed materials for causing the release of said compressed materials from said forming members, means for regulating the tension of said forming members on said material being compressed thereinto, a pair of pivoted jaw members to receive the compressed materials from the lower end of said forming members, and means "for supporting said j aw members comprisinga supporting band around the same, oppositely disposed bars pivoted at their inner, upper ends to said band and at their outer, lower ends being movably anchored through openings in the frame or" said machine, and springs on said bars, whereby said jaw members are yieldingly supported in the upper position and can be yieldingly moved downwardly, said springs operating to normally hold them in the upper position, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a machine of the character shown and described, tamping means, means for operating the same, forming members to receive materials to be compressed into said forming members, neans for adjustably supporting said forming members, tripping mechanism operated by said tamping mechanism and by said compressed material it is moved step by step downwardly under the tamping action, and a pair of pivoted jaw members to receive said material from said forming members comprising two semicylindrical members pivoted together at their lower ends and forming a passageway for said compressed material from said forming members, two bars supporting the same at their inner ends, their outer ends being anchored through frame members to permit slight longitudinal movements :of said bars when their inner ends and said semi-cylindrical. members are moved downwardly, and springs on said bars and adapted to yieldingly hold said bars and members slightly above a horizontal line at the anchor positions of said bars.
