Description

Patented Aug. 18,11874.
In ve nm,-
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICEo DOMINGO NEGROTTO, JR., OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,186, dated August 18, 1874; application filed August 8, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DOMINGO NEGRoTTo, J r., of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention or improvement is to construct a vertical windmill, which canbe regulated by the most simple and effective device. The invention consists in the combination, With a drum having openings on its periphery only for the passage of the regulating-cords, of sails hinged and regulated as hereinafter more fully explained.
Figure l is a top view of my windmill 5 Fig. 2, a front elevation, with the drum and regulating-gearcut through the center; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the regulating-gear; Fig 4, a
top view of the regulating-gear.
Corresponding parts are indicated by similar letters of reference.
A in thel drawing represents the base upon which the mill is erected. O O O C are columns supporting the cross-piece B, and forming a frame, within which the drum D revolves. S, main shaft, having a feather near the bottom, pivoted in the step K at the bottom, and in the cross B at the top. D is the drum, having anges at top and bottom, to which are pivoted twelve sails, I I I, and provided with holes at the top and bottom through which pass the regulating-cords O O O, which are fastened to the sails and to the flange of the sleeve n. The drum is made close in its entire circumference, except where the cords pass through. By this construction the wind is heldl to the sails, and a greater leverage exerted than where the cylinder or drum is an open frame. The sails are hinged so as to close to the drum in one direction only, and to open no farther than to radiate from the drum. N is a sleeve having a liange at top, pierced with twelve holes, and a groove at the bottom; also, a key-seat to slip over the feather in the shaft S. L is a forked lever, pivoted at H, and having two small inwardly-projecting pins tting in the groove of sleeve N, for the purpose of moving said sleeve up or down, as indicated by dotted lines, while it revolves with the shaft, thereby opening or closing the sails. lIhe catch or ratchet M is for the purpose of keeping the sails open at any desired distance, or for stopping the mill when required by closing the sails.
I claim as my invention- The close drum D, in combination with the sails I I I, regulating-cords O O O, and sleeve N, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
