Description

D. E. SALVUCCI BOX WITH OPENING DEVICE June 16,
Filed Jan. 14. 1924 III) or fioating portion of this hand between the parts of the wedge formed by said split, the connection between the wedge and the supporting band being efl ected either by press ing the wedge sections so as to pinch or grip the wire therebetween, or by soldering or welding the same together.
Normally, when the box is fully closed and no pressure is applied to the push button the latter is moved laterally into its outermost position, as shown in Figure 1, whereby the wedge is withdrawn to such an extent that the body and cover of the box can be pressed together the maximum extent for tightly sealing the same and the adjacent parts of their beads come closely together. F or the purpose of loosening the cover and body relatitely to each other and partly opening the box, this is accomplished by pushing the button inwardly toward the box whereby the wedge engages its inclined surfaces with the opposing sides of the beads on the body and cover and forces the same apart to such an extent as to permit the complete separation of these box members to be effected without ditficulty if access to the material within the box is desired. Upon releasing the inward pressure on the push button, the resilience of the wire band moves the push button outwardly automatically so that the wedge is withdrawn frombetween the beads to such an extent as will permit of pressing the cover and body fully together tor closing the box and protecting its contents against deterioration.
It', in addition to a radial inward pressure, a vertical pressure should be applied to the push button during the operation or loosening the body and cover and opening the box, such vertical movement is prevented by reason of the wedge engaging with the underside of the cover bead which resists upward movement of the push button and the stop lug of the push button engaging with the upper side of said bead and resisting downward movement of the push button, thereby preventing displacement of the latter with reference to the cover and avoiding breaking or injuring the supporting band which otherwise might be liable to occur.
This box opener is not only very simple and inexpensive in construction and capable of being readily applied to the standard forms of boxes now in use, but the same is also very efficient in operation inasmuch as it permits of easily and quickly loosening and opening the box, and it also is compact in construction so that the same will not occupy any more room when packed for storage or transportation than a box of ordinary construction.
I claim as my invention:
1. A box comprising a body member having a lateral projection, a cover memberengaging with said body and provided with a lateral projection, a finger piece movable toward and from said box members, a split wedge arranged on said finger piece and adapted to engage with the opposing sides or said projections, and means for movably supporting said finger piece and wedge on one of said box members.
2. A box comprising a body member hav iug a lateral projection, a cover member engaging with said body and provided with a lateral projection, a wedge adapted to engage with the opposing sides of said projections, and a flexible wire bow having a floating part which is connected with said wedge and fixed parts which are attached to one of said box members on opposite sides of said wedge.
3. A box comprising a body having an upwardly projecting side wall and a circumferential bead projecting laterally from said wall, a cover having a downwardly projecting wall which is adapted to slip over the wall of the body and provided with a circuniterential bead projecting laterally from the respective wall, a finger piece movable toward and from the walls of said body and cover, a wedge arranged on the central part of the inner side of said finger piece and adapted to engage with the opposing sides of said beads, a stop projecting inwardly from the upper end of said finger piece and adapted to engage with the upper side of the head on the wall of the cover, and a flexible wire bow which embraces the wall of the cover below the bead thereof and has its central part connected with said wedge while its side parts are connected with the cover wall below the bead thereof.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
DANIEL E. SALVUCCI.
