ATTACHMENT FOR STALING- MACHINES.
Application mea october 27, 1924. serial No. 746,191.
To all whom t may concern:
` Be it known that I, IsArAH CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eckelson, in the county of Barnes and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Stapling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stapling machines.
The object is to provide means, in the form of an attachment, which may be connected to hand-operated machines, or dcvices for securing a plurality of sheets of paper or other sheets or layers together, by
means of staples, said attachment enabling' the stapling machine to be operated by one hand to hold the machine steady and in proper position on said sheets and tol impart the necessary pressure upon the plunger for forcing the staple through the same.
Another object isto provide means for the above purpose, which may be either in the form of said attachment for application to existing machines or devices, or
which may be built into the machine during the process of manufacture, the said means consisting primarily of a handle adapted to be secured to the stapling ma- 3c chine in a manner to yreadily receive the fingers of the operator to hold the same steady, while the palm of the same hand is in exact position above the head ofthe plunger to exert a downward pressure upon the latter by a simple bending of the wrist to effect the stapling operation.
A final object is to provide an attachment of this character which may be adjusted to suit the size of the hand of the operator, said attachment being readily applied in position on the base of the machine and adjusted so as not to interfere with the functions of the several parts thereof.
A full and complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, it being understood that while invention, the latter is not to be confined Vsuitable the drawing shows a practical form of the` to strict conformity with the showing there-- of, but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

The stapling machine to which the present invention may be attached, comprises a flat metal base member 1 of elongated, rectangular form, and having the longitudinally disposed guide-way and housing 2 for the reception of a plurality of separate wire staples, (not shown) which are fed forward by a spring-actuated follower 3 towards the front end of the device, where the upstanding superstructure .4 contains suitable mechanism for lactuation by the vertically slidable plunger 5, having the impact head 6 at its upper end, and adapted to be forced downwardly by the hand, to perform the stapling.
The present inventionV comprises a handle or finger-hold Tradapted to be engaged by the fingers-ofthe operator when the palm or ball ofV the hand is pressing on the plunger,k as above stated, so as to enable the operator to hold the device steady and prevent any movement thereof on the sheets of paper and at the same time, enable the operator to exert greater pressure upon the plunger, as will be, readily understood by reference to Figure l of the drawing.
The handle or finger-hold is formed of metal, preferably substantially elliptical or oval in outline.` It may be either of solid formation, or formed of sheet metal curled or rounded into shape. The ends of the handle, which is adapted to be located transversely to the longitudinal axis of the base of the stapling machine, are pro- Esi vided with depending, oppositely-bowed or curved arms 8 formed integrally therewith, and adapted to hold the handle in elevated position above the base of the machine, so that the lingers when engaged therewith, as shown, will not interfere with the action of the follower 3, and also that the palm or ball of the hand rests naturally upon the head 6 of the plunger.
The lower ends of the side arms 8 are turned inwardly, toward each other in opposed relation, the lower ends being formed into transversely disposed extensions constituting feet 9, which are adapted to rest uponand be securedto the side margins of the base plate l of the machine and to extend longitudinally thereof, the inner opposed edO'es of said feet being spaced a distance apart to readily receive the aforesaid guide-way and housing 2. Vtlhen the device is placed upon' the base of the machine in the aforesaid position, the handle 7 is arranged slightly below the head of the plunger, in transverse relation to the base of the machine and in proper position to be engaged by the lingers (Fig.
In order to adapt the handle to larger or smaller hands, the feet are provided with longitudinal slots l0, closed at each end, and extending longitudinally of the feet and in like relation to the base l of the machine. At the proper point, the base is bored and countersunk on its lower face, for the reception of screws 11 extending upwardly therefrom a suiiicient distance to pass through said slots and receive thumb nuts l2, preferably having milled heads for turning the same to bind the feet 9 to thc base l of the machine in proper position to adjust the attachment to different size hands.
In incorporating the improvement during the process of manufacturing the stapling device, it may be constructed by forming a suitable extension or extensions at either side of the base of the machine andby bending Iand rounding the same, produce the handle portion 7 though without the desirable feature of adjustability, and it is therefore believed that the form of the invention, as shown and described, as an attachment, having such advantage, is the most desirable and valuable.
F rom the foregoing it will be seen that a simple, cheaply constructed and strong and durable device has been provided which, in the form of an attachment, may be easily applied in proper adjusted position upon the base member of an ordinary hand-operated stapling machine orr device, to enable the operator thereof to properly engage the hand and lingers to hold the device steady upon the work' to be done, andto enable a greatery amount of pressure to be exerted upon the operating plunger to drive the staples through said work, and it will also be observed that the attachment provides a convenient means for carrying the stapling device when necessary.
That is claimed is l. A stapling machine, comprising a base, a casing carried by the base, a depressible staple-setting plunger carried by said casing, and a loop handle carried by said base and elevated above the casing in rear of said plunger and adapted to be grasped by the fingers when the palm of the operators hand rests upon the head of the plunger'.

A stapling machine comprising a base, a casing mounted on the base, a depressible staple-setting plunger, and a transversely arranged loop handle mounted on the machine and elevated above the casing in spaced relation to and in rear of said plunger and adapted to be grasped by the lingers when the palm of the operators hand rests upon the plunger.

A stapling machine comprising a base, a casing carried by the base,` a depressible staple-setting plunger, a transversely arranged loop-shaped handle mounted on the machine and elevated above the casing in spaced relation to and in rear of said plunger and adapted to be grasped by the fingers when the palm of the operators hand rest-s upon the plunger, said handle having integral terminal supporting arms provided with transverse feet at the free ends thereof, said feet. being in opposed relation to each other and arranged longitudinally of said base, and means for binding the feet to the base to secure the handle in adjusted position. A stapling machine comprising a base, a casing` mounted on the base, a depressible staple-setting plunger, a transversely arranged loop-shaped handle mounted on the machine and elevated above the casing in spaced relation to and in reary of said plunger and adapted to be grasped by the fingers when the palm of the operators hand rests upon the plunger, said handle having terminal curved arms provided at their opposed free ends with feet extending longitudinally of said base and adapted toV rest on the margins thereof, said feet having longitudinal slots, set screws mounted in the base and traversing said slots, and thumb nuts mounted on the screws to bear on the feet and hold said handle in adjusted position.
5. A stapling machine comprising a base, a casing mounted on the base, a depressible staple-setting plunger', and a transversely arranged handle or linger hold mounted on the machine and elevated above the casing iny spaced relation to and in rear of said plunger and adapted to be grasped by the fingers when the palm of the operators hand rests upon the plunger, said handle having means of'attachment to the base;

A stapling machine comprising a base, a casing mounted 0n the base, a depressible staple-setting plunger, and a transversely arranged loop-shaped handle mounted on the machine and elevated above the casing in spaced relation to and in rear of said plunger and adapted to be grasped by the fingers when the palm of the operators hand rests upon the plunger, said handle being provided with attaching feet adapted to be 10 longitudinally adjusted on the base of the machine.
