The upper end of each door is Wound upon a drum, the door 14 on the drum 29 above the roof 13 of the car, and the door. on the drum 39 positioned in the roof construct-ion of the car. The doors 14 and 15 are arranged to pass over the drums upon which the same are to be Wound and then around drums 31 and 32 respectively in the rear of the first mentioned drums, before returning to said first mentioned drums. The curved elongated head of the first section of each of the doors is received in the drums 29 and 30 by passing thro-ugh longitudinal slots 33 therein. It Will be noted that when the drums 29 and 30 are rotated in a clockwise direction the doors 14 and 15 respectively Will be drawn upwardly and Wound thereon after passing around the drums 31 and 32 respectively.
Y The drums 29, 30, 31, and 32, are mounted upon shafts 34, 35, 36, and 37 respectively, Which have their opposite ends attached to supporting members 38. The members 38 that support the drums 29 and 31 are secured to a slightly inclined plate 39 positioned upon the roof of the car, While the supports for the drums 30 and 32 are at- 7 tached to the opposite side of a metallic 29 and 30 are rotated, the drums 31 and 32 respectively Will be rotated in the same direction and at the same speed, Which will cause the Winding of the door 14 on the drum 29 and the door 15 on the drum 30.
The drum 29 is slightly longer than the remaining drums and has another sprocket 46 thereon and secured thereto from which a sprocket chain 47 extends to a sprocket 48 carried by the shaft 35. The sprocket 48 is loose on the shaft 35 and has a clutch face 49 on one side thereof for engaging a like clutch face 50 carried by a Worm gear 51 which is also carried by the shaft 35, said Worin gear having means connected therewith for rotating the same, Which means Will be described in detail as the deseription proceeds. The opposite side of the sprocket 48 has an annular recess 52 therein which receives an annular flange 53 carried at one end of a collar 54 slidable on the shaft 35 but fixed thereto against rotation. The flange 53 is positioned in the recess 52 for rotary movement yet retained therein by a ring member 55 secured to the sprocket 48. The collar 54 has a clutch face 56 arranged to engage a similar clutch face 57 provided on one end of the drum 30. An annular groove 58 is provided in the collar 54 which receives inwardly directed pins 59 carried by a yoke 60 on one end of a slidably mounted L-shaped lever 61. It Will be noted that When the lever 61 is shifted to engage the clutch faces 49 and 50, the Worin gear 51 Will rotate the "i drums 29 and 31 due tol the sprockets 46 and 48 and sprocket chain 47, and that when the clutch faces 56 and 57 are engaged the drums 30 and 32 will be rotated as the Worm gear 51 rotates the shaft 35 which Will rou tate the collar 54 upon Which the clutch face 56 is arranged.
ln order to rotate the Worm gear 51 a Worm 62 carried by a shaft 63 meshes With said Worm gear, said shaft having a bearing 64 for one end thereof mounted on one of the supports 38, While the opposite end of the shaft 63 passes through a bearing 65 and opening 66 carried by and extending through the Wall 10 respectively. Attached to the last mentioned end of the shaft 63 is a pair of universal joints 67 which are in turn connected to a vertical shaft 68 mounted for rotation in a bearing 69 carried by the Wall 10. The lower end of the shaft 68 is received in a casing 70 arranged adjacent the floor 12 of the car, and has a beveled gear 71 thereon Which meshes with a like gear 7 2 carried by a bearing member 73 through which the shaft 68 extends. Secured to the gear 72 is a crank handle 74 for transmitting rotary movement to the beveled gears 72 and 71 through the shafts 68 and 63 and to the Worm gear 51. The casing has a slot 75 therein, While the member 73 is rotatable on the Vshaft 68 so that the handle 74 may be swung away from the Wall 10 When it is desired to rotate the drums for raising or lowering the door 14 or door 15.
loo
To prevent unauthorized persons from opening the doors, a keeper 76 is secured to the Wall 10 by bolts, rivets, or the like, said keeper having a pair of parallel spaced lugs 77 projecting therefrom between which the crank handle 74 is received when it is desired to lock same against operation. A headed pin 78 is then passed through a pair of aligning` openings, one in each projection, and a sealing device 79, such as that commonly used for sealing railroad cars, is passed through an opening in the loWer end of the pin.
The lower end of the L-shaped lever 61 projects through a slot 81 in the Wall 10,
