labor and consequently facilitates the issuance of"V transfers by' theconduct'or.
'Ot-her fea-tures and advantages of: my iu'- vent'ion will appear more fulily" I proceed with my specification.
in' that form of devi-ce en'ibodfyingl the features of my invention', shownI in the ac'- companying drawings', Fgur'e- 1': illustrates my improved transfer ticket. and Figure 2` is a diagrammatic fragmentary Viewof a street map for the'piupose of aiding in eziplain-ing my invention.
Als shown in Fig: l", the' transfer ticket may bear upon its :fa-ce the desired: matter constituting a Valid medium for theY transfer ofy passengers" from one car line to another; This matter may be as desired;` and" 1'- have here shown it as comprising' mere-ly Athe' uf'ordis Foe Traction Company.J` It may also bear date or other insignia'- adapttaly to'indicate that it isvalid`- for one-Eday only. I haveA here sho-Wn this information as coin'- prisi-ng merely the date October 312, 1922;.
lt may also bear' af serial number, such as indicated by 2lQ87Q7, and' such other information as may be desired'. rllheV reve-rse side, not shown, may alfso'containiy informa# tion regarding the manner of use and such .rectangl'es are provided only for exceptional use and Will be punched as the occasion re-V quires. i
In' the upper two rectangles in column 1G, I have printed' 1in M. and PQ hi, as shown. The proper oneV of these rectangles is punched depending" upon Whether the transfer is issued in the forenoon or aften noon: ncoi'nmonpractice', the issuing con*- ductor may so punch a number off transfers ineadvance. At noon time (which is ordinarily not zr rush' time) he can'puncli approximately' enough transfers 1). ML to serve-his needs duri-ng the entire afternoon; Thisinay be done'iirthe saine Way for the mornings use. f this done, each transfer will not 'have to be punched in this respect as it isissued.
Aside from the information referred to abeve, the' transfer contains twelve principal rectangles il, as show-n. Since these twelve principal rectangles are similar, I will describe in detail but one.
Each rectangle 11 is divided into sixteen small rectangles 12, there being four vertical rows with four each. |The first (at the left) vertical row contains from top to bottom directional indications N, S, E, IV Abovethe N in the uppermost small rectangle appears a numeral, from 'l to 12, indicating the hour. The top rectangle in the second vertical row contains the number 15 to indicate fifteen minutes past,
the hour. rIhe uppermost small rectangle in the third vertical row contains the number to indicate thirty7 minutes past the hour, and likewise the fourth vertical row contains the numeral to indicate fortyfive minutes pastthe hour.
It will be. seen, therefore, that there is one large rectangle 11 for each hour and that each of such rectangles has four horizontal rows and four vertical rows, each containing four smaller rectangles. The horizontal rows ind'cate the direction of travel, as designated by the letters N, S, E, W, andthe vertical rows indicate the Vquarter hours, as designated by 15, 30 and 45; the first vertical row indicating the'even hour. It is obvious that the horizontal rows may be made longer or may have more subdivisions 12, if it is desired, to indicate smaller fractions of the hour than quarters.
In issuing the transfer, one punch mark put in the proper small rectangle 12 will indicate the direction of travel and also the time of issuance in quarter hours. As eX- plained above, the proper punch mark in A. M. or 1). M. will indicate the forenoon or afternoon.
I will now explain the method of indicating the issuing route. This may best be understood by referring to the diagrammatic view in F ig. 2 where I have indicated three Separate north and south street car routes-State Street, Ashland Avenue and Wabash Avenue, and three east and west routes Madison Street, 47th Street and 43rd Street. In the use of my invention, each route in the street car system is given some characteristic designa-ting symbol, such as the numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. I have here shown the State Street route as designated by l, Ashland Avenue by 2, 1Wabash Avenue by 3, Madison Street by 4, 47th Street by 5, and 43rd Street by (3. Routes 3, 4 and G terminate as shown. The conductor on each route is also supplied with a punch which will punch the proper .mark designating the route occupied by him. For example, the conductors on State Street carry punches which will punch l The conductors on the Ashland Avenue route have punches which will punch 2 and so forth. Therefore, whenxthe conductor issues a transfer and punches the same, the shape of the punch mark made by his punch will indicate the issuing route.
rIhe advantages of the invention may be better understood by describing a certain course of travel. I will suppose, for example, that a passenger' boards a car at X on vWabash Avenue at 2:15 p. m., October 31, 1922 andwishes togo to Y on Ashland Avenue. I will assume as stated above, that the conductor on the lilabash Avenue car has already punched I. M. in advance on a considerable number of transfers. rllhis conductor, as stated before, is supplied with a punch which will make a punch mark 3 As the passenger pays his fare at X, the conductor takes a transfer (already punched R M.) and punches the same 3,-as shown. This punch mark being in the large rectangle 11 containing the hour designation 2 and lying in the vertical column with the heading 15, indicates thaty it was issued at 2 :15 p. 1n. The mark lying in the horizontal coluinn.S indicates that the direction of travel is south. I will assume that the passenger reaches the intersection of Wabash Avenue and MadisonV Street at 2:45. At this point he boards a Madison Street car going west and presents his transfer, whereupon the conductor on the Madison Street car punches it with a 4, as shown, and gives it back to the passenger'. It is to be noted that the Madison Street car conductor does not issue a new transfer, but merely puts a new punch inthe original transfer. This 4 indicates the time and the direction of travel. Iwill assume that the passenger reaches the intersection at Madison and State Streets at 3 :30. He then presents his transfer to the State Street conductor on a south bound car, who punches it with a l, as shown, thus indicating the time of boarding the State Street car and the direction of travel. I will assume that the passenger reaches the intersection at State Street and 47th Street at 4:00. At this point, the passenger boards a 47th Street car going west; whereupon the conductor punches a 5, as shown. I will assume that the passenger reaches the intersection at 47 th and Ashland Avenue at- 4:30
p. 1n. Here he boards a south bound Ashland Avenue car, whereupon his transfer is punched with a 2, as shown. It will be noted that the time and direction are always indicated on the transfer, so that they can easily be determined by the conductor when.
travelling, the conductor would refuse tor honor` it.
While l have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that itis capable of many modilications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the `spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in View of the prior art.
What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: Y
l.. A transfer ticket having marked thereon twelve principal divisions, each being designated by an hour-symbol, each of said principal divisions being divided into subdivisions, and indicia in connection with the sub-divisions whereby each vof such subdivisions indica-tes both a fraction of the hour and the direction of travel.
2. A transfer ticket having marked thereon spaces, and indicia in connection there-v with whereby each of said spaces indicates both a particular time and direction of travel.
A transfer ticket having marked thereon spaces, and indicia in connection therewith whereby each of said spaces indicates a cardinal direction of travel and aV fractional hour ottime.
et. It transfer ticket having marked thereon spaces in horizontal and vertical columns; and indicia arranged in connection with said columns whereby each space indicates both a particular time and direction of travel.
lVitness my hand and seal this 29 day of November, 1922.
