Be it known that 1, JOHN J. Timer-Inn, a citizen of the United States, residing at l i etherslield, in the county of Hartford and State or Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centering lilachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machine tool. construction and particularly to an automatic center drilling machine.
It is an object of the invention to provide preferably in combination with a magazine, an improved blank transferring, centering and holding means adapted to transfer a blank from the magazine to the working position, to center the same in position for operation thereon by the tools, and to hold the blank in position while the tools perform 1* thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means to feed the tool. spindles toward and from the work, such operation being preferably automatically performed in timed relation with the blank transferring, centering and holding mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved spindle driving and looking means adapted to be shifted to drivethe spindle at the desired speed or to lock the same against rotation.
it further object of the invention resides in the novel mounting of the power means on the machine, such mounting being so constructed as to readily receive thereon either an electric motor or a belt pulley driving mechanism adapted to receive power from any si'iitable source.
Another object of the invention resides in a blank guiding and supporting means, such means being adapted in one position to guide the blanks into a receiving receptacle as they are reieased from the holding means and in another position to receive and support such blanks.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In such drawings annexed hereto and forming a part 01 this specification, I have shown my invention as embodied in a center drilling machine but it will be understood that the 1921. serial no. 467,056.

first have their ends accurately drilled or countersunk at the center thereof to receive the lathe centers. This operation is ordinarily performed in a hand or semi-automatic machine. The primary object of the present invention is to provide an automatic machine for performing this function. In its broad aspect such machine comprises the ;following principal parts: a magazine for holding a quantity of blanks, transferring, centering and holding mechanism for transferring the blanks individually from the magazine to the working position and for centering and holding the same in axial alignment with the tools a pair of drill spindles at opposite sides of the transferring mechanism, means for antomatically feeding the spindles axially toward the work, and means for varying the extent of such feeding movement. It will be understood that the invention comprises other mechanism and details of construction not above enumerated. Such mechanism and the specific construction illustrated in the drawings will now be described. It should be understood however that while the machine is primarily intended for center drilling both ends of a piece of work, a single drill spindle may be provided for certain classes of work and the drilling may be performed otherwise than at the center of the work, or a chamfering or other tool may be used if desired, all of which is within the scope of the invention.
A bed 1 supported on legs 2 has mounted thereon drill supporting heads 3 and a; The heads are adjustable longitudinally on Ways 1 of the bed and are adapted to be secured in adjusted position by the usual clamping means 5 each operated by a handle 6. Drill spindles 7 and 8 are mounted in the heads and are adapted to support drills 7 and 8 therein. v Electric motors 9 and 10 may be provided for rotating the spindles. Means are provided as hereinafter described for feeding the spindles inwardly toward the work. A magazine 11 at the rear of themachine is adapted to support a quantity of blanks 1V and a reciprocating carrier 12 is adapted to transfer the blanks individually from the magazine to a position between the drill spindles. Cooperating with the carrier is a pair of work engaging members 13 by means of which the work is centered and held in a position in axial alignment with th drill spindles. The several parts of the machine just described are adapted to be synchronously operated by means of a motor 14. These everal parts of the machine and the operations thereof will now be more specifically described.
The magazine 11 comprises a pair of blank supporting uprights 15, each mounted on a support 16, preferably integral with the adjacent spindle supporting head. Each upright is preferably mounted for a slight longitudinal adjustment on its suppmit and may be secured in position by means of a clamping handle 17 engaging a clamping bolt in a T-slot 18. By this construction it will be noted that each head and magazine upright is adjustable longitmlinally along the bed as a unit. In this manner the magazine may be adjusted for blanks of varying lengths and the drill spindles are always retained in approximately the desired operative position relative to the magazine and blanks 'i'erl therefrom. the means at 18 providingfor a slight relative adjustment of such parts to allow for tools of slightly varying lengths and for other reasons when desired. It will furthermore be noted that each work engaging member 18 is also mounted on its adjacent spindle supporting head whereby longitudinal adjustment of each spindle supporting head also adjusts its magazine upright and the opposed work engaging member 3 therewith. Means hereinafter described is provided for permitting a slight longitudinal adjustment of each work engaging member on its support.
The carrier 12 comprises a pair of workengaging jaws including in part a pair of slides 19 each mounted in a guidcway in the base of its magazine upright 15. as illustrated in Figs. 3, 7, S, 9 and 18. A work supporting and clamping plate or jaw propor 20 is secured to the forward end of each slide by means of a bolt 21 and pin 2:? engagin holes in the plate. As illustrated in Fig. 9, each plate is provided with a plurality of work engaging notches Eli-l therein of diderent sizes, and also with a plurality of holes 24 whereby the plate may be secured to the slide in any of its work cngag23- ing positions. The rear of each slide is provided with a hookshaped element 25 ad justably secured in the slide. 13) by means of a screw 26. A plunger ,7 is mounted within a bore 28 of each slide and a. compres ion spring 29 surrounding the plunger within the bore normally forces the plunger outwardly. A rod 30 mounted on a pair of levers 31 secured to a shaft 3:? on a b acket 32- bolted to the machine frame by bolts 32, engages the slides between the elements 25 and plunger 27 thereof. An arm 33 secured to the shaft has a roller 23 thereon engaging in a cam path 35 ot' a, can: i143 mounted on a shaft 37. It will be seen that as the cam is rotated the carrier will be reciprooated transversely of the bed 1. A. box 32 formed on the bracket 32 provides a receptacle for receiving extra plates 20 when not in use.
The work engaging members 13 cooperate with the carrier in centering and holding the work and each member provided with lllt! ill) a ll-shaped work engaging jaw 38. These members are each adjustable transversel of the bed 1 by means of a screw 39 operated by hand wheel 39 and are each mount-- ed on a support 40 longitudinally adjustable on a guidcway ll on its adjacent spindle supporting head. With the guideway 74: adjusted to the angular position illustrated in Fig. 6, the roller Z 3 rides downward in the guide wav 74; as the bell-crank lever is moved to the left. This rocks the hell-crank lever about its fulcrum 76, the extent of such rocking movement depending upon the angle to which the guidewav i4 is adjusted. The movement of the pivot 'll to the left 8 and 6) is adapted to feed the drill spindles inwardly and the rocking movement of the helhcranl: lever to the left therefore inc eases the feeding movement of the drill spindles. With the guideway 74 placed in a horizontal position; the roller 7'3 rides therein without any vertical movement and the bell-crank lever is therefore given no rocking.movement as the cam 36 is rotated. By adjusting; the bracket and guidewav about the pivot 749 to incline the nu 'dewaj in the opposite direction to that illustrated in Fig. t, the roller T3 will be moved upwardly as the tnlcrnni roller 76 moved to the left, whereby the bell-crank lever rill be rocked to the right and the pivot 71 will be moved to the right and thereby decrease rather than increase the feeding movement of the spindles relative to the movement oi roller 76. In Fig. (3 the guideway 74- is set to give the maximum stroke to the spindles. A. elarnp T8 is adapted to clamp the bracket 75 in any of its adjusted positions. l he 3G is driven from motor 14; through the following mechanism (Fig. A small spiral gear 79 on the motor shaf engages a large spiral gear 80 on shalt S1. A spur gear on the shall 81 meshes with. a spur rear 8?; on a shaft and Worm on the shait 8 meshes with a worm wheel 86 on the aforesaid shaft 37. A pump 87 is adapted to be driven from the shatt 81 through a belt 88 whereby a lubricant is de livered from a tank 89 through conduits 90 to the drills. Three electric switches 91 (Fig. 1) are adapted to control the operation of the motors.

In some instances. it may be preferred to operate the machine through belt driven means rather than through the motors here totore described. In Figs. 13 to 17 I have illustrated attachments adapted to be substituted directly for the said motors. such attachn'ients being; provided with belt pulleys adapted to be operated from any convenient source of power.
The attachment illustrated in Fig. 13 comprises a supporting" surface or face plate 95. a supporting arm 96 providing a bearing 9'? for a shaft 98. Bolts 101 extending through the face plate are adapted to secure the attachment to the machine in the same manner that motor 10 is secured by bolts 101. A center drilling; machine comprising in combination, a base, a pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles on the base, a magazine for supporting a plurality of blanks, a pair of laterally movable members on the base having horizontal blank supporting surfaces and vertical blank gripping surfaces, the blank supporting surfaces being adapted to receive a blank from the magazine and to support and carry the same therefrom to a tooling position between and adjacent the spindles, a pair of fixed jaws between which and the blank gripping surfaces the blank is adapted to be centered and held by the members for the tooling operation, and means for automatically and synchronously feeding the drill spindles toward the blank and operating the members.

A center drilling machine con'iprising in combination, a base, a pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles on the base, amagazine for supporting a plurality of blanks, a horizontally movable carrier on the base having substantially horizontal blank supporting surfaces and substantially vertical blank gripping surfaces, the blank supporting surfaces being adapted to receive a blank from the magazine and to support and carry the same in a substantially horizontally direction therefrom to a tooling position between and adjacent the drill spindles, a pair of fixed jaws between which and the blank gripping surfaces the blank is adapted to be centered and held by the carrier for the tooling operation, means for adjusting the jaws transversely of the spindles, and means for automatically and synchronously feeding the drill spindles toward the blank and operating the carrier.
11. A center drilling machine comprising in combination, a base, a pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles on the base, a magazine comprising two relatively adjustable guideway members for receiving the ends of a plurality of blanks, a movable carrier adapted to receive a blank from the magazine and to support and automatically trans fer the blank from the magazine to a tooling position between the drill spindles, a pair of fixed jaws against which the blank is adapted to be centered and held by the carrier for the tooling operation, means for relatively adjusting the magazine guideway members longitudinally of the spindles and for likewise relatively adjusting the jaws, and means for automatically and synchronously feeding the drill spindles toward the blank and operating the carrier.

A center drilling machine comprising in combination, a base, a pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles thereon, means on the base for centering ablank in the drilling position between the drill spindles and for holding the blank in such position, a pair of links operatively connected respec tively to the drill spindles, a single cam for reciprocating the links to automatically and simultaneously feed the drill spindles toward the blank, means other than the cam for varying the'stroke of the spindles, and
power means for synchronously operating the first .nai'ned means and the cam.

A center drilling machine comprising in combination, a base, a pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles thereon. means on the base or centerin blank in the drillinsz' position between the drill spindles and for holding the blank in such position, a cam men ier provided with a cum pa a bination, a base, a tool spindle. a movable (if blank carrier on the base, :1 rectangular plate-like blank engaging jaw mounted on the ca ier and having different sized blank en ing: notches in the corners thereof, s for securing the jaw to the carrier with any one of the notches in the blank engaging position, a normally fixed jaw against which the blank is adapted to be centered and held by the frst named jaw. and means for synchronously and autoi'nath eally feeding the spindle toward the blank and operating the carrier.

A center drilling machine comprising: in eon'ibination, a base, pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles on the base a moyable blank carrier on the base COH'iIHlSlTi'I two spaced elements. a rectangular platelike blank eng ging; jaw mounted on each element, the jaws each being provided with difierent sized notches in the corners thereof, means for secur ng the jaws to the elements with any of t e notches in the b ank engaging position, a pair of fixed jaws against which the blank is adapted to be centered and held by the irst named jaws. n'ieans for adjustiinl the fixed jaws trans versely of the spindles, and means or auto matically and synchronously feeding the drill spindles toward the blank and operating the carrier.

A center drilling machine comprising in combination, a base, a pair of oppositely disposed drill spindles on the base, a movable blank earrier on the base comprising two snbstantiallv horizoi'itally movable slides, a rectangular plate-like blank engaging jaw mounted on each slide. the jaws eaeh being provided with different sized notches in the corners thereof, means including bolts for securing the jaws to the slides, the j awe each being provided with a plurality of spaced bolt-rece wing holes therein whereby the jaws may be mounted with any of the said notches in the blank engaging position. a pair of fixed jaws against which the blank ltlli lie ea ers is adapted tobe centered and held by the first named jaws, means for adjusting the Flflifl jaws trunsn ersely oi. the spindles, and means tor automatically and synchronously tending: the drill spindles toward the blank anal operating the carrier.

A machii' e tool comprising in combi: nation, a base, support mounted on one end thereof, a spindle in the support, means whereby the support may be adjusted on the base longitudinally of the spindle and secured in adjusted position, a magazine coin n'isinp; two guideway members adapted to receive the ends of a plurality of blanks, one otsaid rneznhers being mounted on the support and adjustable therewith toward and from the other member, and means for transferring; a blauktrom the magazine to the st Indie and for holding the same in position for a tooling; operation.

A machine tool comprising in com-- bination, a base, a support mounted. on one end thereof, a spindle in the support. means whereby the support may be adjusted on the base longitudinally of the spindle and secured in adjusted position, a magazine compr' 'r; two p uideway .ll'lWTllDBLS adaptedto receive the ends of a'plurality of blanks, one GTE said. members being; mounted on the support and adjustable therewith toward and from the other member, a fixed jaw on the support laterally of the. spindle, and means for transferring a blank from the magazine to the jaw and centerinp; and holding the same therein in position for a tooling operation.

A machine tool comprising; in combination, base, a supportmounted on one end thereof, spindle in the support, means whereby the support may be adjusted on the base loiuritudinally of the spindle and secured in adjusted position, a magazine comp isingrtwo pguideway members adapted to receive the ends ot a plurality oi blanks, one of said members being mounted on the support and adjustable therewith toward and from the other membe", a fixed jaw on the support laterally ol' the spindle, a movable carrier supported by the support opposite the fired jaw, and means for open atinp; the carrier to transfer blank from the n'iagazine to the jaw and to center and hold the same therein in position for a tooling operation.

A machine tool comprising in combination, a base, a support mounted on one end thereof, a. spindle in the support, means whereby the support may be adjusted on the base longitudually ot the spindle and secured in adjusted position, a magazine comprisingtwo gruideway members adapted toreceive the ends of a plurality o't blanks, one oil? said members beinp; mounted on the support and adjustable therewith toward and. from the other member, a fixed. jaw on the support laterally ol the spindle, a movable carrier on the said one member opposite the lixed jaw on the support, means proriding an adjustment on the support of the said one member longitudinally of the spindle, and means for operating the carrier to transfer a blank i roi'n the magazine to the jaw and to center and hold the same therein in position for a tooling operation.

In a machine tool, the combination of a support, means for holding a piece of Work and for operating thereon, gearing for operating the said. means, two optionally usable power mechanisms each adapted to be detachably secured to the support in operative connection with the gearing for driving the same, one of the said mechanisms being an electric motor and the other mechanism being a belt driven attachment comprising; a bracket having a driving pulley supported therein, both said mechanisms and the support being provided With cooperating supporting n'ieans including bolt holes adapted to be placed in alignment for mounting either mechanism on the support, and bolts for engaging in the said holes to secure either mechanism to the support with either the motor armature shaft or the said pulley in operative connection with the said gearing.
