EDWARD Jac son,ornate-nine;"rnlvnsynvariin, nssieizronwro trim ENOLDE AND 1 I HORST coiarANY, or, eam-ave, j PENNSYLVANIA,
, VANIA. Y
' Application filed June 5,
citizen of the United States, residing ate Reading,ii11 the coun'ty -of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gap-Closure Attachments for Knitting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to circularknitting machines employing a latch guard ring having a gap for securing the movable yarn-guide members ordinarily employed as more fully set forth in Robin son Patent No. 1,357,252 of November second, 1920; and it consists of straight bar closuremember with independently controlled means to determinedly project or retract the same across said gap in a plane substantially tangential to said guard ring. The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the novel features particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing my invention applied to a latch ring andindicating operating means adapted 'to be carried on the table portion of the machine; only one of the series of cooperating yarn guides employed being show l Fi 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, but showing the closure bar moved to gap closing position, its retracted position being indicated in dotted lines.
, Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings A represents a latch ring and C the gap formed therein between parallel arms C andC the latter 40 carrying a pivot pin C for a series of automatically operated'thread guide fingers B,
'one only of the latter being shown. Each guide B is operated by its own pattern controlled push rod F and the parts thus re- 45 ferred to are'of known structure as more fully set forth in said Robinson patent aforesaid, which also fullydescribes the necessity and function of a closure for said gap G to prevent flirting of the needle latches. i :In the present improvements, shown inpreferred manner in the drawing, I employ an improved :dially swinging arm N quired. Spring oer-Croatian 'AErT crrr/inivr FOR KNITTI G ail-tenures.
1924. Serial No. 717,935.
A CORIGRATIOIT OFI PENNSYL- a gap closure vmemberyll formed from a straight round bar or wlre of properdiametercut to proper length. Tlnsbaris car ried in a bearing bracketI secured to the ring A asshown andisadapted tobe'moved axially therein through ring aperture J alined with said bracket carried bar so as to transversely cross said gap 0 at a point substantially tangential to prevent unintended swinging of the latches.
The bracket I as shown fixedly carries a guide rod K extended therefrom in parallel relation to said bar H,and the latter is provided with a fixed end collar -L gaging said guide rod K so asto support and insure free axial movement of bar H at all times. A spring M strung on said bar H between bracket I and collar L normally retains said bar in retracted position away from'gap G, but'free to move across the latter-when .bar J is moved axially against the tension of said spring M. t
The bar J may be moved in any convene ient manneigbut'inthe drawings I have shown afsimplemeans operated from the usual pattern mechanism to determinedly actuate the same. qflhis consists of a raa bearing or bearings O seouredto the machine frame P, a crank extens on R of the bearing engaged portion pivotally engagin a push rod S. V The rod S may=be actuate as desired from the usual pattern drum, not
shown, but commonly employed, to swing arm N into .contactw1th collar .L to move bar J against the tension of its spring M so as to project said bar across gap C when re- M will retract bar J when pattern mechanism frees arm N. The specific structure above set forth. may readily be modified, the essential features of the present invention comprising the simple straightbar J moved axiallyto close the gap as more specifically set forth in the claims. I
What I claim is: Y
1. In a knitting machine the combination with a plurality of pivotally operated thread-guide members and a latch ring having a thread-guide member comprising a straight bar movable the open ring A,; where it will act in well known manner to gap, of a gap closing slidably e11 pivotally carried in across said gap in a plane substantially tangential to said ring, and means for determinedly moving and retracting said bar.
2. In a knitting machine the combination with a plurality of pivotally operated thread-guide members and a latch ring having a thread-guide gap, of a gap closing member comprising a straight bar movable across said gap in a plane substantially tangential to said ring, means to normally retract said bar, and means to determinedly project the same across said gap.
3. In a knitting machine the combination with a plurality of pivotally operated thread-guide members and a latch ring having a thread-guide gap of a gap closing member comprising a straight bar normally projecting outside said ring, and means for determinedly moving the same axially to cross said gap in a plane substantially tangential tosaid rin 4. In a knitting machine the combination With a plurality of pivotally operated thread-guide members and a latch ring having a thread-guide gap, of a gap closing member comprising a straight bar, a bearing therefor outside said ring, a parallel guide rod, a spring on said bar between said collar and bearing, a ring aperture extending to said gap alined with said bearing, and means for determinedly moving said bar axially against said spring tension. to project the same across said gap in a plane substantially tangential to said ring.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
