Piano-Forte Attachments,
N0.l54,066, PatentedAug.11,1874x WITNESSES: INVENTDB 5 WK monms.
THE GRAFKIC CO. PHDTOf -ITNJSI H BKFK PLACE;N.Y
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. MILLER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIANO-FORTE ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,066, dated August 11, 1874; application filed July 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. MILLER, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Piano Sound- Insulating Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the piano-leg, the insulating plate being shown in dotted lines.
The invention relates to a novel mode of applying a non-conductor of sound to a piano, so as to prevent its diversion and partial escape by the way of the legs.
The means which embody the mode will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the piano-plate, which has dovetailed lugs a a passing down into vertical holes I) b, and laterally into dovetail grooves b b of the plate B. U is an insulating plate, made preferably of glass, but which may be made of any other material that is a non-conductor of sound. D is the top of piano-leg,
having a cavity, d, that receives the insulator O, leaving a certain portion thereof above its upper surface. This is held by countersunk screws E to the leg-top D, while it has a recess, 0, to receive the plate B, which is clamped thereto by means-of a bottom -plate, 13, and screws G. The leg-topl) has a smaller recess, a, that receives the last-mentioned parts without suflering them to touch any of its surface.
By this construction of parts it is impossible for any portion of the sound to be transmitted by way of the legs to the floor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with piano-plate A, legtop D, and their connecting plate B, of the intermediate insulator C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20th day of J nly, 187 4.
WM. R. MILLER.
