1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrii Bonus, a citizen of the United States, residing at ()kmulgce, in the county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Temper Screws, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in temper screws employed in connection with drilling apparatus for oil wells, and serving to lengthen the stroke of the drill as the work proceeds, in order that the bit may strike the lower end of the bore on each working stroke.
.l urther objects include the provision of wear adjusting means at the point where the member termed an elevator is connected with the jockey stick; the provision of a particular type of yoke for the splitnut, or box, with which the screw cooperates, and the provision of an anti-friction bearing between the swivel block and the transverse handle bar carried by the screw just above the swivel block.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangementof elements described illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation; Figure 2 is a vertical section, showing the; principal operative elements; Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a fragmentary side I elevation showing clamping means for the threaded box members with reference to which the screw is to be'adjusted vertically; Figure 5 is a top plan view of an upper transverse bar having an angular or hexagonal socket the size of which may be varied to lit the end of a jockey stick and compensate for the wear at that point; Figure 6 is a section through the threaded box elements adapted to be clamped to the screw; Figure 7 is a yoke member adapted to surround the elements of Figure 6.
The reins 10 include parallel bars such as 11 connected at the upperends with a shank 12 carrying across bar 13 forming a T element to be supported from a walking beam, not shown.
The boxes 11, 1a are formedrespectively on the lower ends of bars 11, are threaded internally at 15, and constitute a split nut of the elevator is the adjustment provided:
in connection with the mounting of the jockey stick 25. This stick passes through longitudinal bore 26 in the main screw 16, and has hexagonal or other angular end pen tion 27 received by the angular socket 28 at the central portionof the elevator. (Across section of the jockey stick near the end corresponds with the form of the extreme end.) An enlargement 29 provides a bore 30 for bolt 31 whichextends at an angle with a slot 39, formed in the enlarged portion, and exten diing between the outer edge thereof and the socket 28. The adjustment of nut 33 onthis bolt serves to take up wear be'-' tween the end of the jockey stick and the socket 28. Guides 34. in elevator 18 cooperate with the parallel members of the reins 10 A yoke is employed for mounting a screw for clamping the elements of the split nut,
otherwise termed box members 14, 14. The yoke is designated 35, and includes an elliptical frame having a threaded socket 36 formed thereon for threaded shank 37 of handle 38. The shank 37 passes into the yoke and engages box 1 1, for tightening the latter on the screw.
The lower end of the screw has a head 45 formed thereon, this head being positioned within socket 46 of swivel block 47, rotatable 011 the screw and separated from the head by ball clearing 48. Jockey stick 25 has a T end portion 49 bolted to the swivel block, and the stick passes loosely through the bore of the main screw.
WVhen there is no weight on the swivel block 47, the weight box 23 will exert a pull on elevator 18, jockey stick 25, and on T member 49, tending to lift the swivel block and bring it'into engagement-with the central portion-of transversehandle bar 50, by which the screw is taken up and by which the screw is rotated with reference to the swivel block and reins.-

thereby eliminating friction, and facilitating to a marked degree the operation of the device.
The apparatus is to be carried by a walkingbeamyin the usual manner: A cable for ing it with reference to the box con'iprisingelements 14, 14!. Thus the drill may be caused to advance at the properrate and strike the bottom ofthe-bore at each stroke.
