UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES VICTOR THOMAS EAST, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO A. G. SIALDING 8c BROS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
GOLF-CLUB HEAD.
Application filed July 3, 1924. Serial No. 724,003.
To all whom it may concern:
Figure 1 is a face view of the club (the Be it known that I, JAMES VIC/Ton shaft being omitted and THOMAS EAST, a citizen of Australia, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Club Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in iron golf clubs of the pitching type, such as the mashie and mashie-niblick, the purpose of which is to raise the hall sharply into the air, giving it a high trajectory and pitch and to impart a back spin to minimize the roll of the ball on striking the green.
Most of the putting greens on the chain pionship courses of today are very severely trapped around the green, and the greens, during our summer months, are hard and fast. It frequently happens that the approach shot to the green instead of finding the green rests behind one of these traps, over which. the ball must be carried to the green Frequently the lie of the ball. unfavorable, that is, it lies in thick grass, or stubbly growth, or in a cuppy formation, any of which necessitates a f H1 crisp stroke to dislodge the ball.
The present invention aims to provide a club which will have sufficient breadth of sole to give the feel of the regular club of this type, but which at the same time will. be so constructed that the carrying power of the blow will be diminished, permitting a ball on one side of a green behind a trap to be struck harder and with more confidence that it will not carry across the green and into a possible trap on the other side.
To this end the invention comprises the novel construction hereinafter described and defined by the appended claim.
A golf club constructed in accordance with my invention is illustrated in the ac companying drawing, in which:
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
The club head as a whole is indicated at 1 in this drawing and its front face 1 is concaved on any sectiontaken vertically, as for example, on line 22, or any-line parallel thereto, said front face being straight or of customary formation on horizontal lines.
The back face 1 is likewise concave on vertical lines.
The sole of the club, indicated at 1", I
make of increased breadth or thickness ove 1 what is custon'iary, and through this increased thickness I maintain the metal necessary to give the feel of a regular golf head, but the double concavity thins the blade out at the point of contact, thereby diminishing the carrying power of the blow, permitting a ball on one side of the green, behind a trap, to be struck'harder and with more confidence that it will not carry across the green into possibly a trap on the other side.
By this means I produce a golf club that has the feel and weight of any normal pitching club, but which has the bulk of the weight disposed below the longitudinal axial line of the head to raise the ball abruptly; with a thin spot created by the converging lines of the face and back, whereby a ball hit with an equal force with this club as compared to one of equal weight under a normal distribution of metal will carry less distance.
Having thus described what I claim is:
A golf club of the pitching type having a relatively thick sole and concave front and back faces.
In testimony ture.
JAMES VICTOR THOMAS EAST.
