CLASP DEVICE.
Application filed May 12, 1923. Serial No. 638,466.
This invention relates to clasp devicesand particularly to devices of this class designed for use in connection with vanity cases, small handbags, suitcases and the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this class composed of separate parts fashioned from sheet metal or from suitably formed sheet metal blanks; a further object of the invention being to provide improved means for retaining the yoke or lock member of devices of this class in connection with one part thereof and for reinforcing that part of the clasp device in connection with which said yoke or lock member is mounted, a` still further object being to provide the crosshead of the yoke or lock member with means cooperating with a flat spring for retaining said member under tension in its operative position; andywith these andA other objects in view, the invention consists in a clasp device of the class and foi-.the purpose specified which is simple in construction and efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed and produced in accordance with the method hereinafter set out.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, ofwhich the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate part-s of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in eachjof the views, and in which Fig. l1 is a bottomplan view of mycomplete clasp device, detached.

My improved clasp device comprises two body portionslO and 11, and for the purpose of description, the body portion 10 will be regarded as the main body portion and 11 the supplemental body portion. I
also employ ayoke or lock member 12 and a sheet metal spring 13. In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I- have shown a blank l0a from which the main body portion 10 is formedI and this blank is of an irregular contour but one end is substantially semi-,circular 1n form as shown at -14 and provided with three equally spaced projecting fingers 15. The other end portion of the blank is mounted as shown at 16 `and provided at one sidev thereof with projecting curved 1ingers 17 having square shoulder portions 18 and at the oppositeside are arc-shaped recesses 19. In forming the main body por` tion 10, the blank 10a is formed from suitable dies and fashioned into the form shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, or in other words, to form a cup-shaped body 20, which is arc'- shaped in form at one end as shown at 21 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and the other end portion of which is reduced to form a projecting arc-shaped nose 22, and the lin-- gers 15 extend atright angles to thel top face 23 of the body portion 10 as do also the fingers 17 as shown in Fig. 5. l The arcshaped nose 22 .is hollow on its inner face or provided with a recess 24. 4
The Vsupplemental body portion l1 is formed from a blank -11a shown` in Fig. 7 of the drawing, and lthis blank is substantially semi-circular in form and provided with three equally spaced fingers 25, and

The member 12v is blanhed from sheet metal into the form shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing, and the member112 is in the' .forni of a loop or yoke, arc-shaped in form at one end as shown at 29and provided with a slight projecting portion and the other end of which is connected by a transverse crosshead 31 having` an enlarged centrall portion 32, which projects at the opposite sides of the crosshead 31 as shown at 33 and 311. 1n completing the part 12 the crosshead portion thereof is bent at a slight angle L to the plane of said memberI as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.

It will be noted that when' the supplemental body portion 11 is mounted in connection with the main bodyport-ion 10 or when the nose 22 passes into the aperture 27 of the body portion 11 as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. and the member 12 is moved into its closed and operative position .as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, that. said member is held firmly upon the body portion 11 under the tension of the spring 13,"said spring comprising` upwardly arranged projections 33 at one side of the enlargement 32 ofthe crosshead 31 as clearlyV shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and whenthe bodyportion 11 is removed, the yoke or lockmember 12 will assume a position ata slioht -angle to that shown in Fig. 2, in which position the face of rthe enlargement 32 will lieflat upon the spring 13. The member 12 may alsobe tensionally held in the position shown in Fig. 3j or maybe swung backwardly to lie upon the top face of the main body portion 10 if kwhat l claim as new and shown a specific method of forming the separate parts of vmy improved rclasp delvice, it will be understood that lam not necessarily limited in these respects and various changes in and modifications of the yconstruction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a clasp device oftheclass described.
Ya main body portion composed of sheet metal, a lock member mounted in recesses at the opposite sides of said body portionl and provided with a cross-head extending transversely .of and through said body portion and said body portion beingvprovided with projecting fingers Vadapted 'to be folded inwardly and around the crosshead ofsaid lock member-for retaining said lock member against displacement from said body portion, and other projecting fingers on said body portion for mounting the same in connection with a suitable support. f

In a clasp device ofthe yclass described, amain cup-shaped rbody portion fashioned from sheet metal, a lock member mountedin recesses at the opposite sides of said body portion and provided .with a crosshead eX- tending transversely of saidbody portion, means at the opposite sides of said body portion adapted to be folded inwardly around the crosshead of said lock member for retaining said member in connection with said .body portion, and a sheet metal spring mounted in the body portion and cooperating with said lock member to control the operation thereof, and aY plurality of projecting members on said body portion by means of which the same may be securedl to a kpredetermined support.

A clasp device of the class described comprising a main cup-shaped body portion fashioned from sheet metal, a lock member mounted in recesses at the opposite sides of said body portion and provided with a crosshead extending transversely of said body portion, means at the opposite sides of said body portion adapted to be folded inwardly around the crosshead ofsaidlock member for retaining said 'member' in, connection..
with said body portion, a sheet metalspring mounted in the body portion and cooperating With said lock member to control the operation thereof, the crosshead of said lock member being provided centrally thereof with an enlarged portion, which cooperates with said spring to retain said lock member in its operative position under tension, a
supplemental sheet metal body portion adapted to interlock with said main body portion and in connection With which said lock member cooperates, and said main and supplemental body portions being provided with projecting fingers. 1

A clasp device of the class described comprising main and supplemental body portions composed of sheet metal, said body portions being adapted to interlock one With the other, a lock member retained in connection With said main body portion and cooperating with said supplemental body portion to retain said body portions in connection with each other, means in the main body portion and cooperating With said member for holding the same in its operative position under tension, the side Walls of said main bodyv portion being provided with curved fingers adapted to be folded around said lock member' to retain the samein connection With the main body portion, and said main and supplemental body portions being provided with a plurality of project ing fingers for securing the same to predetermined supports.
5. In a clasp device of the class described a substantially cup-shaped body portionthe opposite side Walls of which are provided with recesses, a substantially loop-shaped lock member having a crosshead portion adapted to enter'the recesses of said body portion, and the Walls of said body portion beingprovided with a plurality of projecting members, two of which are curved and adapted to bel folded around the crosshead portion of said lock member to retain the same in engagement With said body portion.
