UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW L. HILL, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIG NOR TO W. J. QUINLAN AND WILLIAM B. CHAMBERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOG-RINGING NIPPERS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 1 54,046, dated August 11, 1874; application filed May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. L. HILL, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing Hogs from Booting; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the jaws for grasping and inserting a peculiarly-shaped wire in the nose of a hog, as will be hereinafter set forth. In the annexed drawings making part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective Views of the jaws. Fig. 3 is a view of the wire; and Fig. 4, a view showing the position of the wire after insertion.
In the figures, A and B represent two metallic jaws, having handles, and riveted together in a manner similar to ordinary pinchers. Both of these jaws are curved on their inner faces. The jaw A has a curved tongue or block, 0, either formed upon it or firmly secured to it, the object of which will be described. The other jaw, B, is provided on each side a portion of its way with flanges c c, and at its end it has a lip turned inward, as seen at 00. Between the ends of the lip and the flangesthe metal of the jaw is cut away, forming a notch or recess, a, at each end of the lip. The form of the wire is seen in Fig. 2, and in being used the straight portion d is caught against the lip .10, while the curved portions lie against the bottoms of the jaws. The two straight portions or points h h are separated a short distance from the straight part d. The points h h are inserted in the two nostrils of the hog, and pressure being brought upon the handles of the jaws said jaws close upon the wire and force the points through the upper portions of the hogs nose. The tongue or block 6 keeps the round or curved portions i i in proper place, while the notches at it allow the ends of the wire to pass under the straight portion d, so as to form two loops, as seen, and thus effectually secure the wire in the nose. 1
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and "desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The jaw B, with its flanges c c, lip w, and recesses a a, constructed as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The jaw A, with its tongue or block 6, in combination with the jaw B, as constructed, as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of April, 1874.
A. L. HILL.
