UNITED STATES EDWARD R. HENRY, OF VANCEBORO, MAINE.
CLAMP on visa.
Application filed April 17, 1922, Serial No. 553,675. Renewed September 18, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. HENRY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Vanceboro, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Clamp or Vise; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a clamp or vise.
It is primarily aimed to provide a novel and eflicient construction of clamp, vise or means designed to firmly hold the wheels of railway rolling stock to the rails while journal boxes are being jacked in order to repair or inspect hot boxes, so that the wheels will not elevate with the journal boxes, as
is frequently the case at present and which offsets the effect of jacking.
It is also aimed to provide the construction in such manner that it may be used generally as a clamp or vise and for instance in connection with the repairing of laminated automobile bolster springs.
It is further aimed to provide a clamp of the type mentioned having a stock provided with the fixed jaw, a screw associated with 0 the stock and a movable jaw associated with the screw in cooperative relation with the fixed jaw.
Servient objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating.
one practical embodiment.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved cla-mp;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the clamp on the line 33 of Figure 1; Figure 1 is a cross sectional view on the line 44: of Figure 3 but through the entire device, showing the mounting of the lower jaw and Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the upper jaw.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in the different views.
In reducing the invention to practice, a stock of any suitable shape or design is pro vided at 10, which is bored or recessed centrally as at 11 and has a screw rod 12 loosely disposed therein. length desired and has a thread at 13, preferably square in cross section, engaged by a thread 14 of a rotatable hand nut 15, disposed intermediate shoulders 16 of the stock so as to preventvertical displacement of the nut and which nut is insertablethrough an opening 17 provided through thestock.
T he hand nut 15 may be engaged directly by the hand or if greater leverage is desired, a rod or pin 18 may be disposed in any of a series of openings 19, provided in the hand nut and extending inwardly from the periphery thereof for that purpose. The rod 18 may have a knob 20 thereon to facilitate manipulation and itmay normally be disposed in a recess 21 provided in a. reinforcing flange or extension 22 of the stock.
An upper or movable jaw is provided at 24 having a nut-shaped or other lug at 25, provided with an opening 26 having screw threads therein toride on the screw threads 13. Projecting from the jaw 2 lis a lip .27, adapted to directly engage the work, for'instance the inner surface of the flange of a car wheel.
Attention is called to the fact that the type and specific design and construction of jaw 24 will vary according to the different wheels with which the same may be used, or other work to be engaged thereby, Accordingly the illustration of movable aw 2a is to be taken as conventional and merely as one example. It is however of a shape adapted for use both on freight car wheels and passenger car wheels.
It will be noted that the'work face of the lip 27 is preferably roughened or serrated as at 28.
reinforcing rib or flange 30 integral therew1tl1.
Rod 12 is of any Also it will be seen that the lip is laterally enlarged as at 29 and may have a A fixed or lower jaw is provided at 31 to The jaw 31 is era'bly slotted as at and a fastening pin or screw 36 may be secured to the stock with its inner end disposed the slot an abutment, for the shoulders or end walls 37 of the slot 35, to prevent detachmelit of the jaw 31 from the slot.
In addition to the flange 32, the stock may be further reinforced by flanges integral. therewith as at 38.
In use, contemplating the fastening ofacar wheel to a rail so that the car wheel will not beraised with a journal box' while the latteris ein iae ed, he. j w s may be ro ted n therod 12 until it is at the desired distance f m the aw E ereupQn the p 2 1; ts-( e ated. d e ispleced n on a th the inner surface of the inner flange o t-the 111F 1 a dv e er ated s rt ee 32 Qtiaw 31. splae l n ear i st- With he n r su fa e of the tread flangeof there-i1, Thereupon the hand wheel 15' is operated in order. to clamp the aws to t rank, b ns' perat dhy d t en a em nt i.- the a d or by t ppl e ei oi h sin fiazflm etesse an ub quent r ing Q hepin, t will be ear i urse t a t ejeir 1 may e ma ally lid: ela ive y t t e. tock; .9 a c' Q -l n odate it to the, work, its s liding nevement e n i it d by hep nfia As. he p ie -ie l a dse eff-t nren: tion hasbeen describedwith respeet to. means Q ne ype t ilizli atiqn nd operat on,

be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.-
I claim as my invention:
1 A clariip having a stoek, ajaw thereon, a rotatable nut carried by said stock a screw rod engageable by said nut, said screw rod securing the 'nut against displacement from the stock, and ajaw screw threaded on said rod to coact with the first mentioned jaw.
A clamp having a stock, a jaw thereon, a screw rod, a jaw on said screw rod to coact with the first mentioned jaw a rotatable nut to actuate said screw rod, a rod detachably applicable to said nut to facilitate turning thereof, said stock having. an extension integral with it provided with a recess, and said recess serving as a means to normallyretain said! screw rod,
3. A clamp having a stock provided with a jaw, said stock having, an opening andi means integral with the stock providing shoulders at 'said opening, a rot-atablenut dis-i pqsable intermediate. said; shoulders, a, screw rod engaged by said nut, said serew rod; retaining said nut in the stock against dis pla-een' ent, saidstock having a bore to, accommodate said rod, and a jaw screw threaded; on said rod to coact withthe first mentioned je 1 .ln testimony whereof-L afiigr my signature n pre e e of: w t esse ED D R,- HENIW- l/Vitnesses: I
