ELECTRICALLY-OPERATED' STAMPING DEVICE.
Application filed August 20, 1923. Serial No. 658,415.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES S. DUT- TON and (motion H. DERRICK, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively,

and Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented a new and useful Electrically-Operated Stamping Device, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in electrically operated stamping devices and its particular object is to "provide a switch in connection with an electroinagnet having a plunger therein for actuat- 1- ing an object placed in operative relation to the plunger, which allows the object to close the switch by the mere insertion thereof while the action of the plunger removes the object and allows the switch to open t automatically. A further object of the in vention is to provide a platform constructed to be operated by the plunger of the electro-magnet. Further objects and advantages of our device will appear as the 2 1 specification proceeds The preferred form of our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a side view of our electro-magnet and the switch arrangement 3 Figure 2 an enlarged detail View of the operation of the same showing the switch closed by the insertion of the object to be acted on, Figure 3 a similar view representing alater stage in theopera-tion, and Figure 4 a wiring diagram for our device. While we have shown only the preferred form-of the invention it should be understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The electro-magnet power plant or motive means (1) is mounted on a suitable base (2) and has a plunger (3) movable theremagnet (4) is provided having an armature, (6) disposed in front thereof adapted to establish electrical connection between two stationary contact points (7) and (8) when the armature is drawn toward the electro-magnet (4) by the energizing of the latter. The electro-magnet (4) has a switch (9) incorporated therein which latter forms the principal part of the present invention.

A second contact member (14) is supported on a vibrating spring (16) and normally occupies a position within a recess (17) in the platform so that the upper portion of the spring (16) extends slightly above the platform when the, latter is in its lowermost position. allows the object (18) when brought in operative relation relative to the platform (12) and introduced in the manner illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 to force the contact (14) toward the contact (11) and to thereby close the switch (9). The closing ofthe switch (9) allows the electro-magnet (4) to become energized and to connect the contacts (7) and (8) by means of the arma ture (6) which latter'operation closes the circuit of the electro-magnet (1) so that the latter becomes energized and its plunger (3) is forced upwardly, raising the plat- .form (12). The raising of the platform" causes the object (18) to become disengaged from the contact member (14) and the latter is allowed to return, under the influence of the spring (16), to its original position in the manner indicated in Figure 3 whereby the electro-magnet (4) becomes de-energized, which again causes the armature (6) to become disengaged from the two contacts '(7) and (8) whereby the circuit of the main electro-magnet (1) is opened. The return of the plunger (3) then allows the platform (12) to return to its original position so that now the contact (14) again projects above the platform and is ready to be actuated by the'next' object to be acted on. 1

The operation of the switch will be readily understood from the foregoingdescription. The object (18) is placed on the plat form (12) and closes by its mere insertion the switch (9) which energizes the electromagnet (4), connecting the two contacts (7) and (8) and thereby energizing the electro magnet (1). The plunger (3) rises and forces the platform (12) and the object (18) lying thereon, against the face of the opposing block (29). The rising of the platform causes the object (18) to be disengaged from the contact (14) and the latter is allowed to spring back into a circuit openingposition as indicated in Figure 3,
- whereby the two electro-magnets become deenergized successively. The plunger (3) thereupon returns to its original position.
It will be noted that the contact (14) when the switch isopen rests against the rear wall of the recess (17) in the platform (12 This arrangement allows the .spring (16 carrying the contact (14) to come to rest immediately after it returns to the recess since theengagement of the spring with the rear wall of the recess tends to deaden any vibration of the spring (16) that might possibly cause a. repeated clos- "ing of the switch.
We claim: j 1. In a. device of the character described,
