Be it known that I, Gnonen N. Hem, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the from the end after the piston has been withdrawn therefrom necessitates that the operator first withdraw the piston, deposit the same and then pour into the open'end of the barrel the fluid to be administered, then reinsert the piston and continue with the operation. This is an exceedingly long drawn out operation and oftentimes requires that the piston be resterilized. These objections are also true in the use of ampuls as at present'practiced, and it is to overcome these objections that the present syringe has been designed. a
One of the principal objects of this syringe is to provide a means whereby the liquid to. be administered can bedeposited in the barrel without entirely withdrawing the piston from the barrel, thus overcoming. the piston becoming contaminated when requiring the same to be deposited on an unsterilized surface, and enabling the admin istering of the charge immediately after depositing in the syringe barrel.
A further object is to provide a wall structure for the filling opening to overcome injuring the fluid seal packing provided at the end of the piston. Further objects are to provide a novel form of fluid seal packing element and a novel form of releasable retaining device for holding the same within a recess in the end of the piston. Another object is to providea wall engaging flange associated with the liquid seal memher, and to so form the same that a number of extremely flexible wall engaging edges are provided. I

tion, size and minor details of construction wlthin the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the lnventlon.
To more fully comprehend the invention reference isdirected to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly in section of the improved embodiment of my invention.

In the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates a tubular barrel open at one end as at 2 and carrying at its opposite end a detachable coupling 3 which serves to mount a hypodermic needle and base 4 of the ac-- l cepted type thereto. The end wall of the barrel 1 is inwardly bevelled as at 5 to facilitate the entrance of the lower end of the piston 6 of a diameter to snugly fit the interior' diameter of the tubular barrel '1. The plunger is provided with an operating handle 7 and is adapted for reciprocating movement longitudinally within the barrel 1. The barrel near its upper open end is formed with finger grips 8 and within its wall a short distance below its upper end 2 is provided with a filling opening 9, the peripheral walls of which are downwardly and inwardly bevelled or rounded as at 10 to afford a relatively smooth surface on the interior of the barrel 1. The end of the piston 6 inserted in the barrel is provided with an auxiliarly chamber 11 extending adistance longitudinally thereof for the reception of a packing member 12. The inner end of the chamber openslaterally as at 13 through the side wall of the piston 6 at a point removed from its end, and the chamber wall adjacent said opening 13 is inwardly turned as at 14 providing an engaging surface; The packing member consists of a core 15 preferably of metal, flanged at one end as at 16, the latter being provided with perforations 17 through which the material forming the covering may pass during the formation of the packing. The opposite end of the core is formed with a contracted neck 17, and beyond the same there is provided an enlargement l8 affording an annular shoulder 19. The elastic covering on said core is preferably of rubber and comprises a head 19 of a diameter to normally snugly engage the inner walls of the barrel 1, the headbeing provided with a raised port-ion 20, which, when compressed against the end of the core supplies material for spreading the end of the: covering. A
skirt 21 extends over the side walls of the core and tightly engages the core, the skirt terminating short of the portion 17'. Between the head and skirt is formed an annular flange, the inner surface'of which rests on the end wall 22'of thepiston, and the periphery of the flange is formed with a circumferential concave groove 23 providing the flexible lips 2 1 for engaging the inner surface of the barrel.
The packing when in position in the piston chamber may re removed therefrom by the operator while grasping the plunger after the same is removed from the barrel, and with'the thumb of the same hand insorted into the opening 13, exert inward pressure on the portion 18 to compress the skirt 21 against the lateral centering wall 25 to remove the flange 14 from the rear of the flange 19. The operator then exerts lineal pressure on the member 18, and this forces the packing from the packing chamber 11. hen a new packing is desired, the operator may select a suitable packing while thesame is in the sterilizing receptacle, maneuvered until it is standing upright, insertthe piston thereover, continue the downward pressure until the flange 14 passes rearwardly of flange 19, thus the packing can be renewed without the operator touching the sterilized packing. This is quite essential in devices of this type.
' The pressure on the head 20 which tends to spread the same also forces the lips 2st into engagement with the barrel wall of the formation of the concave peripheral recess which insures a fluid tight seal between the peripheral lips 24: and the barrel Wall regardless of which direction the piston is reciprocated therein.

2. A hypodermic syringe including a tubular syringe barrel open at one end for the reception of a piston, a piston reciprocably mounted therein and provided with a chamber at one end opening at its inner end laterally through the side wall of the piston, an elastic packing member detachably secured to the end of the piston and includmounted therein and provided with a chamber at one end opening at its-inner end laterally through the side wall of the piston, an elastic packing member detachably 'secured to the end of the piston and including a substantially conical body for reception within the chamber, a headfor resting on the piston end wall, and a retaining flange for engaging with the chamber wall for es tablishing releasable holding contact there with.

5. A hypodermic syringe including a tubular syringe barrel open at one end for the reception of a piston, a piston reciprocably mounted therein and provided with a chamber at one end opening at its inner end laterally through the side wall of the piston, an elastic packing member reciprocable within the end of the piston, means for detachably retaining the packing in position, said means being releasable on'lateral movement being imparted to the end of the packing member through said lateral piston opening.
6. A hypodermic syringe including a tubular syringe barrel openat one end, a piston reciprocably mounted therein, a packing detachably carried at the end thereof, and including an elongated core of general convex configuration flanged at its head'end and flanged adjacent to its other end, a'flexirap ble packing material covering the head end and the part of the side walls of the core and snugly fitting the same, said flexible packing being formed at its head end with an annular flange provided with a circumferential concave groove of a radius to intersect the opposite edges of the flange, the full area of the end of said packing being exposed to the pressure within the barrel.
7. A hypodermic syringe including a tubular barrel open at one end for the reception of a piston, a piston mounted to reciproeate therein and provided with a sealing member for engaging the barrel wall, the
syringe barrel inwardly from its open end being provided with a filling opening, triangular in plan with its base substantially parallel with the open end of the barrel and the 'walls thereof bevelled inwardly and downwardly from the opening, and grip members, associated with the barrel.
