MACHINE FOR COATING, GLAZING, OR OTHERWISE TREATING PAPER AND SIMILAR MATERIAL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMU. POIIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bogota, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Coating, Glazing, or Otherwise Treating Paper and Similar Material, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to finishing machinery for coating, glazing or otherwise treatingpaper and similar material. My invention consists in the special arrangement of the various rollers used in such machinery, the bearings therefor, their relative adjustment and other features of construction as will more clearly appear from the following description of my invention and the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, in which for the purpose of illustration only I have shown my invention in more or less diagrammatic views, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my new machine, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof as seen from the right in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar side elevation with the bearings for the rollers omitted, but showing the driving mechanism; Fig. 4 is a side elevation as seen from the left in Fig. 1 with the bearings for the rollers omitted and also showing the driving mechanism; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the coating mechauism,- seen from the side; Fig. 6 is a front elevation thereof and Fig.
' 7 is a detail view of one of the operating rollers with a grooved surface for printing.
All the operating parts, bearings, and so forth are mounted in a heavy cast-iron frame 1 to which are removably fastened at suitable places strong brackets 2 (Fig. 2) adapted to carry the sliding bearings 3 for the reels 4, 5, 6 and 7 on which the paper or other material to be treated is wound. The bearings 3 can be adjusted with the aid of screws 8. For guiding the webs of paper or other material guiding rolls 9. 9. 9*, 9, 9", 9. 9, 9, are provided in suitable relation to the reels and operating rollers. In a fixed bearing 16 is rotatahly mounted a large operating roller 11. A second similar roller 12 is rotatably mounted in adjustable bearings 13 allowing the roller 12 to be adjusted in its position relative to the roller 11.
The journalsof the roller 12 rest in straps 14 (Fig. 3)
whereby the roller 12 may he lifted away from the lower roller 11. With the latter cooperates a smaller hollow roller 1:") preferably made of chilled iron and capable of being heated by steam. This roller is rotatably mounted in movable bearings 16, below which are provided abutnlents 17. 'With the upper roller 12 cooperates also a smaller hollow roller 18, preferably made of chilled iron and capable of being heated by steam.
Also this roller 18, similar to roller 15, is
shown in Fig. 2) pivoted at 23 in the iron frame 1 and carrying at their free ends removable weights 24.. Through links 25 plvota-lly connected with lever-arms 22 the atter are pivotally connected with two other lever arms 26 pivoted at 27 to the frame 1. These lever arms 26 embrace interiorly threaded bushings 28 ig. 2) through which pass screw spindles 29 attached to the movable bearings 19' for the top roller 18. At the upper ends of the screw-spindles 29 are provided hand wheels 30 for turning the screw-spindles for the purpose of manual adjustment of the bearings 19. In order to release the pressure of the weights 24 from the lever-arms 22, lifting earns 31 are provided secured to a shaft32 which also carries two hand-levers 33. By movingthe latter toward the left in Fig. 2 the lifting arms 31 are brought. to bear against the lever-arms raising the same and thereby releasing the pressure of the weights 24 from the movable bearings 19.
With each of the smaller rollers 15 and 18 there cooperates a coating device to apply melted p'araflin, or any other coating substance.- to the rollers 15 and 18 to be in turn applied by these rollers to the Web of paper, or other material passing between them and the rollers 11 and 12 respectively. The coating device is shown in Fig. 2, and a detail view thereof in Figs. 5 and 6, Fig. 5
1 rotatably journalled in movable bearings 38 so as to make the roll 37 adjustable relative to the roll 35. The bearings 38 can be shifted by means of screw-spindles 39 engaging a correspondingly threaded portion of the bearings 38 and provided with a handwheel 40. The movable bearing 38 is provided in a frame 41, provided with a second set of movable bearings 42, in which is rotatably journalled a third roll 43 adjustable relative to roll 37. The roll 35 di ing into the coating substance is refera y a metal roll, while the rolls 37 an 43 are preferably made of felt, or a similar material. In the trough 34 near the bottom is provided a steam pie 44 connected with a source of steam not s own, so as to keep a molten mass in a. liquid state. The entire frame 41 carr ing the trough and the various rolls 35, 37 and 43 is movably mounted on the main framel andcan be shifted back and forth by means of av screw spindle 45 engaging a correspondingly threaded lug 46 provided on frame4l. As shown in Fig. 2, two coatin devices such as just described are provided, one for the bottom roller 15 and the other for the top roller 18. A similar coating device can also be provided in a position soas to directl apply the coating substance to the. web of paper or other material to be treated as shown in Fig. 3 on the lower left hand side. therein. The three rolls 35, 37 and 43 are geared together by the toothed gears 47, 48, 49 so as to rotate together. Rotation is imparted to the rollers by means of a step pulley 50 (Fig. 6) which, by means of a belt 51 receives its rotation from another step pulley 52. The latter is mounted of a shaft carrying a sprocket wheel 53, which by means of a sprocket chain 54 (Fig. 4) is driven from the shaft of the roller 11 and 12 respectively. The main driving shaft for the entire machine is shown at 54 in Fig. 1 being rotatably journalled inthe fixed bearings 55 and56 and carrying the pulleys 57 and 58, one being secured to shaft 54 and the other being loose thereon. To shaft 54 is moreover secured a small toothed pinion 59 which meshes with a large toothed gear 60 on the shaft of the roller 11 which is thus rotated at slow speed. The shaft of roller 11 carries at its other end a toothed gear .61 meshing with a similar toothed gear 62 on the shaft of roller 12 so that these two rollers. 11 and 12, are rotated at the same speed but in opposite direction relative to each other as indicated by the arrows in by means of a Figs. 2, 3 and 4. At the same ends, the shafts of the rollers 11 and 12 also carry the sprocketwheels 63 and 64 over whic pass the sprocket chains 54 for driving the sprocket wheels 53 above referred to.

' As has been said above, the top and bottom rollers 18 and 15 respectively are capable of being heated by steam, or any other suitable heating medium. In Fig. 1 are shown two steam pipes '7 5 and 76 leadin into the rollers 15 and 18 respectively and both connected to a source of steam not shown. A cut-off valve 77 and 78 respectively is provided in each steam pipe.
If a web of paper, or other material is to be glazed or' coated, or otherwise treated, on one side only, the web is passed as indi cated by the letter N in Fig. 3 from the lower reel 4, for instance over the guide rolls 9 and 9 between the large roller 11 and the small bottom roller 15, then .over the 'guide roller 9 to the winding-up reel 5. In a similar manner, a web of paper can be passed from the stock-roller 6 over the guide- rollers 9 and 9 between the small top roller. 18

If, on the other hand, a web of paper, or i other material is to be glazedycoated, or treated'in any manner, on both sides, then the web is passed, as indicated by the letter N1 in Fig. 2, for instance, from the reel 6 over the guide- rolls 9, 9 first between the smaller top-roller 18 and the-larger roller 12, around the same, being conducted between the rollers 12 and 11, around the latter roller and then between the roller 11 and the smaller bottom roller 15 over the guide-- roll 9 onto the winding up reel .7. Or, if the web is taken from the lower stock reel 4, it is, as shown by the broken lines in Fig. 3, passed first up to the roller 12 between the same and the small top roller 18, then around the roller 12 passing between the same and roller 1.1;, and then between the latter and the small bottom roller to be wound up on the lower winding-up reel 5, after having been passed over the guide-roll 9 lVhile the web is passed-between the roller 11 and 12 and their cooperating small rollers 15 and 18 respectivel these latter rollers are of course, put uncfer pressure to produce the sufficient amount of friction required.
As will be readily seen from the foregoing description, two webs of paper, or other material, can be simultaneously treated without'interfering with each other.
\Vhen a coating substance. such as paraffin or the like is used, which must be kept 'in a liquid state during the operation of the machine, the troughs 34 containing the substance are first heated by steam, and the small top and bottom rollers 15 and 18 are likewise heated. Of the three rolls used for applying the liquid substance, the roll 35 dipping into the same. is preferably made of metal, the second roll 37 is also made of metal but covered with felt, whereas the third roll 43 rotates slowly so as to cause a uniform distribution of the liquid substance over the top or bottom roller 15 and 18 respectively. .The pressure with which the various rolls of the coating device can be forced against each other and against the top or bottom roller 15 or 18, can, of course, be exactly regulated. In connection with the stock- reels 4 and 6 brakes (not shown) are preferably provided so as to control the speed of rotation of these reels and to keep the web thereby under proper tension.
A special description of the operation of my machine is not deemed necessary as the operation will be readily understood from the above full description.
If it is desired. to impress in the web of paper or other material while glazing, coating or otherwise treating the same, a design, the small top or bottom rollers, 15 and 18 can be engraved rollers, such as shown by Fig. 7 showing a roller, by which alternating glazed and dull stripes can be produced in tliepaperor other material.
I claim as my invention:
1. A machine for calendering paper and similar material, comprising a frame, a
large operating roller' rotatably mounted therein, a fixed bearing therefor, a second large operating roller rotatably mounted on said frame. an adjustable bearing there for. two rotatable smaller rollers, one cooperating with each of the said large operating rollers, movable bearings for the said smaller rollers, means for adjustably pressing the said smaller rollers against their correspomling large operating rollers, means for rotating all the. rollers, reels p0- sitioned upon said frame for winding and unwinding the web of paper or other material to be treated, means for rotating said reels and guiding rolls for the material to be treated.
2. The machine as set forth in claim 1, in which the said reels are made adjustable relative to the said operating rollers, including means for adjusting the said reels.

A machine for calendering paper and similar material, comprising a frame. a large operating roller rotatably mounted therein, a fixed bearing therefor, a second large operating roller rotatably mounted on said frame, an adjustable bearing therefor, two rotatable smaller rollers, one cooperating with each of the said large operating rollers movable bearings for the said smaller rollers. means for adj ustably pressing the said smaller rollers against their corresponding large operating rollers, means for rotating all the rollers, reels positioned upon said frame for winding and unwinding the web of paper or other material to be treated, means i for rotating said reels and guiding rolls for the material to be treated, and means for applying a coating to said smaller rollers.

A machine for calendering paper and similar material, comprising a frame, a large operating roller rotatably mounted therein, a fixed bearing therefor, a second large operating roller adjustably mounted on said frame and two rotatable smaller rollers, one cooperating with each of the said large rollers, movable hearings for the said smaller rollers, the said smaller rollers being engraved so that alternating glazed and dull stripes can be produced in the paper.

A machine for calendering paper and similar material, comprising a frame, a large operating roller rotatably mounted therein, a fixed bearing therefor, a second large operating roller rotatably mounted upon said frame and having an adjustable bearing, two rotatable smaller rollers, one cooperating with each of the said large operating rollers, movable bearings for the said smaller rollers, means for adjustably pressing the said smaller rollers against their corresponding lat-gen operating rollers and means for rotating all the rollers.

A machine for calendering paper and similar material, comprising a frame, a large operating roller rotatably mounted therein, a fixed bearing therefor, a second large operating roller rotatably mounted on said frame, an adjustable bearing therefor, two rotatable smaller rollers, one cooperating with each of the said large operating rollers, movable bearings for the said smaller rollers, means for adjustably pressing the said smaller rollers againsttheir corresponding large operating rollers, means for rotating all the rollers, reels for winding and unwinding the web of paper or other material to be treated. means for rotating said reels, guidirig rolls for the material to be treated and two adjustable coating devices adapted to cooperate with the said smaller rollers, so as to apply thereto a coating substance.
7. The machine as specified in claim 1, in which the said smaller rollers are made hollow, and which includes also means for heating the said smaller rollers, and a means for shuttingotf the heating medium.
8. A machine for calendering paper and similar material, comprising two large operating rollers in superposed relation to each other, a fixed hearing for one of said operating rollers. and an adjustable bearing for the other operating roller, a frame supporting said bearings, two smaller operating rollers, one cooperating with each of the large operating rollers, movable bearings for the smaller operating rollers, a plurality of reels for the winding and unwinding of the material to be treated, means for rotating the said rollers and the said reels, means for adjusting the movable hearings for the said smaller operating rollers, and means for pressing the latter with varying pressure against the said larger operating roller.
9. A machine as specified in claim 8, in
which the means for pressing the smaller operating roller against the upper larger operating roller comprising a weighted lever arm, arm or transmitting its weight to the said movable bearing, and a means for releasing the said Weight. 10. A machine as specified in claim 8, comprising two coating devices, one for each of the said two smaller operating rollers, and means for adjustahly supporting the said coating devices.
