WITNESSES A TTORNE YS Patented May 26, 1925 UNITED STATES 1,539,791 PATENT oFrlce,
CHARLES H. HEFLJZLEE, OF GRACEIVIONT, OKLAHOMA. I
PULLEY.
Application filed Dctoser 9, 1923. Serial .No. 667,578.
ToalZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs ii. HERTZ- mm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident .of Gracemont, in the county of Caddo and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain .newan-d useful Improvements in Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to pulleys, and moreparticularly to fan pulleys especially adapted for use with internal combustion engines, such as are widely employed on certain types of automobiles.
The object of the invention is to provide a fan pulley which may be easily and readily assembled with the shaft on which it is rotated, and it is-so securely and firmly held as to insure the elimination of all rattling or vibration and the efficient and effective transmission of the torque of the shaft to the pulley.
A further object is to provide, a device of this character and having these advantages and capacities, and which is, at the same time, extremely simple and durable in construction, reliable in operation, convenient to assemble, and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section showing an engine shaft of an automobile, having a fan pulley applied thereto in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the fan pulley and its attaching pin.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates the engine shaft of an automobile which projects at one end from the casing. The fan belt pulley is designated generally at 11, and preferably includes a hub 12 adapted to snugly fit on the shaft 10, a web or body portion 18.integral with the hub and a rim 14 integral with the web or body portion 13.
The rim 14, the hub 12 and the shaft 10 are provided with diametrically opposed openings, the openings .of the :rim being designate-( lat 15 and 16, the openings of the hub being designated at 17 and the opening of the shaft being designated at 18. The openings 15, 17 and 18 are preferably of the same size of-cross section, but the opening 16 is preferablysmaller than theopenings 15, 17 and 18. p I I An attaching pin or key .20 is provided, and is preferably constructed of a single piece of resilient metal. While the metal making up the pin 20 is resilient, as will hereinafter be particularly pointed out, it is also sufiiciently rigid and strongtocarry out its looking or securing functions. The pin 20 includes a cylindrical body 21 =of a size to snugly fit, although freelyapass through, .the openings 15, 17 and 18. At oneend the body ,portion21 is provided with an integralreduced extension or tenon ,22
which, inthe assembly, is, adapted to snugly.
fit in and to be entirely contained in the opening 16 of the rim of the pulley. ,At the end of the .pinoppositethetenon22, the pin is split or.cut diametrically for a portion of its longitudinal extent, as indicated at 23, to provide two spring arms 24. These arms are so formed as to normally diverge from each other under the spring or resilient action of the metal which constitutes the pin. In order to insure this diverging relation, it is only necessary to spread the arms to the desired extent after splitting or cutting op-' eration, but if found desirable the arms may be also suitably treated after the spreading operation. The extremity of each arm is cut away or reduced to provide a locking shoulder 26 and a locking lug 27.
In assembling the pulley on the shaft, the hub of the pulley is slipped onto the end of the shaft and the openings 15, 17 and 18 and 16 are brought into alinement. The pin 20 is then inserted through the opening 15, and passed into the openings 17 and 18. The pin 20 freely moves for almost its entire length through the opening 15, and until the diverging arms 20 come to the position in which they engage the walls of the opening 15. At this time, a portion of the pin 20 has passed through the openings 17 and 18, so that the pulley is held on the shaft. The end of the pin at which the lugs 27 occur is then tapped with a hammer to drive the diverging arms 24 of the pin through the opening 15. As the diverging arms 24 are driven through the 1 the opening 15, as well as through the openings 17 and 18 is limited by the engagement of the shoulder 19, formed at the juncture of the tenon 22 and body portion 21 of the pin, with the inner periphery of the rim 14' of the pulley around the opening 16.
With this arrangement the pulley is held on the shaft securely-andall vibration and rattling is eliminated. At the same time the pulley may be easily assembled with the shaft and may be taken therefrom by com pressing "the arms 24 and urging these arms while so compressed and the, pin through the opening 15. r
I claim:
1. In combination, a shaft, a pulley fitted on the shaft and having a huband rim, the
hub, rim and shaft having alined openings,
and an attaching pin fitted in the alined openings and having a tenon at one end fitting in one of the openings of the rim, the other end of the pin being provided with diver ing arms havin shoulders engageable with the rim, an lugs disposed in the other opening of therim.
V 2. In combination, a shaft, a pulley fitted on the shaft and having'a hub and rim, the hub, rim and shaft having alined openings, and an attaching pin fitted in the alined openings and having a tenon at one end fitting in one of the openings of the rim, the other end of the pin being provided withv diverging arms havin gageable with the rim,- an lugs dis osed in the other opening of therim, sai pin being constructed of a'single iece of resilient metal and having one an split to define said arms.
3. In combination, a shaft, a pulleyfitted on the. shaft, said shaft and pulley having aligned openings, and an attaching pin of resilient material fitted in the aligned open-Q. ings and having one endsplit, the splitfend being formed with a reduced extension to provide diverging arms, the end of the pin opposite said arms being engageable with shoulders enthe pulley. to position the arms-in the open! ing of the pulley so that the arms are engaged with the wall of the opening in the assembly, the juncture of the reduced end of the pin andthe main portionvthereof presentin inner periphery of the pulley in the assembly for locking the pin in position.
