H. S. POWELL JOINT FOR SPRINGS Filed May 17, 1922 A'I'TGRNEY.
parallel Patented May 26, 1925.
HERBERT S. POWELL, OF NEW HARTFORD, YORK.
JOINT FOR SPRINGS.
Application filed May 17, 1922. Serial'No. 561,730
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HER ERT S. PowELL, a citizen of the United States, residing-at New Hartford, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a joint for springs, and I declare the following to bea full, clear, concise and exact description thereof sufficient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters referv to like parts throughout the specification. i
The object f the invention is to provide a spring having a ball and socket joint that will permit the up and down motion of said spring without twisting or distorting it. Moreover, the ball and socket joint will allow the spring to retain its normal position, when assembled to the car, at all times/ Furthermore, the parts of the spring can be replaced readily, thereby making it comparatively easy to repair the spring. The joint is constructed in such a manner that it can be easily'oiled.
The object will be understood by referring to the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a spring, showing the novel joints;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a hood employed in the joint; the view being somewhat enlarged;
Fig."3 is an enlarged view, showing a central vertical sectiofi of the joint;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view, showing a central vertical section of a modified manner of forming the joint;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section of a oint used at the rear end of the spring;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view, showing a perspective of a modified form of hood employed. Q
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the chassis of an automobile is representcd by 1. Leaf springs 2 are employed "to support the chassis atthe front and rear portions. Said springs are arranged 1n relation to each other and in sets of two. In this instance, the to leaf 3 of each of the springs has its opposite extreme ends bent down at rightangles, as at 4, 4.
, whereby to A hood 5 is adapted to fit over the ends 3 and adjacent the bent part. Hood 5 is open at its bottom part and has lateral sides 6, 6 and an end wall 7 Vall is adapted to lie against the turned down end 4 of leaf Apertures 8, 8 are made in the opposite sides 6, 6 of hood 5 for the reception of a headed bolt 9that with the aid of a nut is adapted to hold hood 5 to the bent end 4;
of leaf 3, as seen particularly in Fig. 3.
The top surface of hood 5 has formed theron a spherical hollow ball shaped dome 10 that is equipped with an elongated sector slot 11 Slot 11 is adapted for the projection of the shank 12 of headed bolt 13.-
Said shank 12 passes also through an aperture 15' in end 16 of the chassis 1 of the automobile.
, End 16 is concaved, whereby to fit over the convex surface of dome 10. The two parts being held together by bolt 13 and nut 17,
in such manner that the chassis end 16- can move more or less relative to dome-10,
which has the enlarged sector shaped slot" 11 for this purpose. By the use of this joint at both ends of each spring 2, the spring will not be twisted or distorted but will retain its normal position. i
The rear end of each spring 2 is supported by bolt 21' to which one end or other part of the chassis 1 isattached. The lower end of yoke 20 is mounted to the upper leaf 3 much in the same manner that the front end isconnected. A hood 5 is employed, The same is assembled to the rear bent over end 4 of leaf 3 and held in place by a bolt 9.
The end 16 of the chassis 1 is equipped with a conduit 23 and reservoir 24 for the passage and storage respectively of oil, lubricate the parts of the joint. A cap 25 is screw threaded to the oil cup or reservoir 24.
Fig. 4 shows a modification of the device. Here the extreme end of the top leaf 26 is bent upward, as at 27 instead of downward, as in the former construction. The end wall 28of hood 29 is adapted to rest against the adjacent: outer surface of end 27 The lateral sides 31, 31 of hood 29 extend downwardand are equipped with a ertures for the projection of a headed b0 t 32 that holds the hood 29 in mounted position on the, end 27 of leaf 26. A dome '34 is formed integral with hood 29 andhas a shackle or yoke 20 carrying a an elongated sector slot 33 for the projec tion of the shank 35 of headed bolt 36 that unitesthe chassis 1 to the joint. An apertur'e 40 is formed in the flat surface of hood 29 for th end 27 of leaf spring 26. 1
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and ters Patent is: v
5 1. In a joint for springs, a hood having a dome, said hood having lateral sides to aid in holding the same in aremovable mannor to the end of a spring and an end wall to aid in preventing'end thrust, a member adapted to co-operate with said dome, whereby to. prevent twisting or distorting of said spring and said member having an oil cup for the storage of oil to lubricate said joint.
2. In a joint for springs, a hood having a dome, said hood having lateral sides and an end wall to aid in holding the same in a removable manner to the end of a' spring and an end Wall to aid in preventing end thrust, a member adapted to co-operate with said dome, whereby to prevent twisting or distorting of said spring and said member having an oil Cup for the storage of oil and a conduit for the lubricate the joint.
3. In a joint for springs, a hood having lateral sides and an end wall'to aid in holding the same in a removable manner to the end of a spring and to aid in preventing end thrust, a bolt to further aid in holding said hood, a member adapted to co-operate with said hood, whereby to prepassage of said oil to e projection upward of the bent desire to secure by Letvent twisting or distorting of said spring and said member having an oil cup for the storage of oil and a conduit for the passage of said oil to lubricate the joint.
4.. In a joint for springs, a hood having a dome, lateral sides and an end wall formed on said hoodto aid in preventingend thrust, a bolt adapted to project through said side walls, whereby to hold the hood to the end of a spring, a slot formed in the dome, a member having a concaved surface adapted to co-operate with said dome, a second bolt projecting through said slot in the dome and through the co-operating member, whereby to hold said parts together and said member having storage of oil and a conduit for the passage of sand oil to lubricate the joint.- I 5. In a joint for springs, a hood having a dome, sicle members and an end wall formed on said hood to aid in preventing end thrust, a bolt adapted to project through said side members, whereby to hold the hood to the end of'a spring, a slot formed in the dome, a member having a concaved surface adapted to co-operate with said-dome, a second bolt projecting through said slot in" the dome and through the (:0- operating member, whereby to hold said parts together, and an oil cup in said member for the storae of oil, and a conduit in said members or the passage .of the oil to lubricate said joint. 1
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
HERBERT S. POWELL
