JEFFERSON M. GARDNER, OF SILVER SPRINGS, TENNESSEE.

IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-COUPLINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,893, dated August 11, 1874; application filed June 23, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEFFERSON M. GARD- NER, of Silver Springs, in the county of Wilson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling for Plowing Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of two plows coupled together, showing the use and working of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the invention passing through the standard and coupling. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the coupling. Fig. 4 is a plan of the coupling, showing the standard and connect ing-bar.

A represent plows, to which standard B is securely bolted or screwed. On this standard are slipped and secured, or turned, or cast on it, two sleeves, G O, with supporting-flanges a, and two key-teeth or cleats, c 0. Two mufis or collars, D D, with slats b 1), corresponding with the cleats 0 0, slip onto the sleeves O O, forming a swivel-joint. ()n this mufl is a journal-pin, E, with a key-tooth or cleat, d, on which the journal-box c slips and has a bearing. F F are two coupling-blocks with journal-boxes 6, into which is a slot, f, to admit the cleat or key-tooth d, which, when revolved up into the cavity shown by the key cl in Fig. 2, looks the box on the journal. Through the upper part of this coupling-block F is a slot, I, at right angles with its axis, that admits of a coupling bar or rod, E, that may be straight or bowed, and which is secured by thumb-screws G.

My invention is used and worked as follows The standard B, with the double swivel-joint complete, is secured'to as many plows or cultivators as it is desired to work, one each, two coupling-rods, of suflicient length to cover the number, slipped through the slots Land the standard secured in place by the thumbscrews, securing these advantages: First, one man can manage and control more than one plow, cultivator, or other implement; second, by the double swivel-joint, the plows or cultivators will accommodate themselves to the inequalities of the ground, and work as well in rough as even lands third, the plows, cultivators, 820., may be conveniently set at any desired gage apart.

Having now fully described my invention, so that those skilled in mechanics can make, and any one can use them, what I esteem as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is

1. The double swivel-joint composed of the flanged and toothed sleeve 0, the slotted collar D, with its key-toothed journal-pin E, and slotted journaLbox coupling-block F, or their mechanical equivalents, all arranged as described and set forth.

2. The double swivel joint, as shown, in combination with standard B and connect ing rods or bars H, all arranged as described, and for the purposes set forth.
