IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,883, dated August 11, 1874; application tiled January 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, J osEPH S. BAENUM, of Princeville, in the county of Peoria and in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Sash-Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speciiication, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l represents an elevation of window, sash, and sash-holder, (from inside;) Fig. 2, end view of sash and holder; Fig. 3, a back or inside elevation of the'holder with sash and window-frame out away to exhibit the same 5 Fig. 4, inside elevation of shield; Fig. 5, upper view or plan of Fig. 4, with the bolt only in place; Fig. 6, horizontal section through the center of the holder, shield, and
spiral cam. The drawings Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are on larger scale than 1 and 2.
This sash-holder consists in the use of a vertically-pivoted cam, of spiral form, within a shield or case, and moved by an axle and lever. The cam acts upon a horizontal bolt, which slides in a slot in the shield, and is jammed against the sash recess of the windowframe to sustain the sash by the double action of said cam on one side against the bolt, and on its other side against the flange or curved bearing projecting from the edge ofthe shield. A nipple77 projecting from the interior face of the latter into a spiral groove in the cam keeps the edge ofthe latter constantly against the curved bearing for action.
In the drawings, A represents the shield, which is let into the face of the sash, and secured by screws at a a. A horizontal slot, f, extends through the center of same, from the edge next to the window-frame G to a point beyond the center, to receive the neck of the bolt E, and also the neck of the cam-axle and lever D.4 A curved bearing, d, (or marginal rim) is raised on the interior face of the shield A, on the side farthest from the window-frame G, to serve as a bearing for that side of the cam in its action upon the bolt E, against which bearing it is held by the nipple i, which projects into a spiral groove, m, in the cam.

The bolt E may be confined to a direct m0- tion by the lugs or guides h h 011 each side of slot f.
The operation-of this lock is as follows: To lock the sash at any height desired, the oper ating lever D is depressed in a direction away from the windowirame, the cam is turned, its increasing spiral circumference presses simultaneously on one side against the curved bearing d, and on the opposite side against the inner end of the bolt E, so as to obtain a doubly-increasing action in driving the bolt against the window-frame G vto retain the raised sash. The opposite edge of the cam is kept against the curved bearing d (in reversing the operation or loosening the sash) by means of the nipple t, on the shield entering the spiral groove m of the cam.
What I claim as my invention is- The shield or case A, provided with the curved bearing d, nipple c', lugs h h, and slot f, in combination with the spiral cam B, square-headed axle O, lever or operating handle D, and bolt E, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
