ADOLFI-I NELSON, OF HUGO, COLORADO.
LUBRIOATOR FOR AIR DRILLS.
Application filed September 2, 1924.
' of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to lubricating de vices and has special reference to a device for lubricating the cylinders of air drills and analogous devices.
Itis well known to those who perience in the operation of air various kinds and especially the rock drills, that they are often damaged from insufficient lubrication. An air-oper ated device presents difficulties in lubrication that are not present in steamoperated devices of a similar nature. Steam must naturally be at a temperature higher than the boiling point of water, as it cannot exist as steam at lower temperatures. The machine employing steam is therefore hot. Compressed air, unless heated previously to its introduction into the machine, enters the machine at the temperature of the surrounding air and consequently produces very low temperatures within the drill as it expands. This interferes to some extent with the lubrication.
It is my intention to provide a lubricating device which is adapted to force a lubricant into the stream of air passing to the drill. This lubricant will enter with the air and cause the valves and cylinder wall to be properly lubricated in spite of the low temperature therein.
My invention can be most clearly described and will be most readily understood when reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which the invention is illustrated, and in which the single figure shows a vertical section of my lubricator, portions being shown in elevation to better disclose the actual construction.
Numeral 1 designates the body member of the lubricator which is an elongated tubular have exdrills of ordinar y Serial No. 735,365.
member provided at each end with threads 2 and 3, which correspond, respectively, with the intake and the delivery ends of the device. intake end is a plug valve having aplug member 4, which is tapered and is rotatable within a correspondingly tapered opening. ()n the lower side of the body member there is a projecting cylindrical wall 5 provided with an externally threaded portion 6 to which the cap 7 is operatively connected.
A washer 8 has a central sphericalprojed,
tion 9 and is pressed against the lower end of the plug 4 by means of a spring 10 which serves to hold the plug properly seated. The cap has a portion 11 of its outer surface hexagonal so that it can be conveniently rotated by means of a r ch. The upper end 12 of the plug is non-circular and adapted to be engaged by a handle 13 by means of which it may be rotated. By rotating the plug 1 ninety degrees, the passageway 14 can be opened or closed at will. Just beyond the plug, the body member is provided with a cylindrical recess bounded by the internally threaded wall 15. An opening 16 of less diameter than the recess connects the latter with the passageway 14. A perforated disk 17 rests on the shoulder formed by the flange 18.
Threadedly connected with the wall 15 is a cylinder 19 whose inner surface is smooth and adapted to receive a piston 20, which is provided with an ordinary piston ring 21. A gasket 22 fits between the upper end of wall 15 and the lower surface of the hexagonal portion 23 of the cylinder.
The outer surface of the cylinder above the hexagonal portion 23 is threaded for the reception of the elongated cap 24 whose upper end is closed by a wall 25 and has a hexagonal portion 26 which may be engaged by a wrench. The piston has secured thereto a threaded stem 27 which cooperates with the threaded opening 28 in wall 25. The upper end of the stem 27 has a square portion 29, by means of which it may be engaged by a wrench and rotated. With the parts assembled in the manner shown, it is obvious that the piston can be moved up and down within the cylinder by rotating the stem 27.
Let us now assume a case in which the end having the threads 2 is connected to a source Located a short distance from the of compressed air, while the other end is connected to an air drill or similar apparatus. By means of, the plug l, thepassa eway 1 1: is opened or closed; as" above-J explained. l/Vith the valve closed, let us re move the cap Qet and the piston 2Qfrom the cylinder 19 and fill the latter with a suitable hard oil or grease. The cap,2 4l is then're; placed with the piston in its uppermostposi tion. By turning the stem 27, the piston can be moved downwardly, by which action grease isj forced, through the openings. in thediskqll' into the passagewaylt where it 'is, cau ht; up by, theswiftly flowing air stream and, carried tothe machine to be lubri ated In. the. mamier described and with the means disclosed, it is possible to lublfilctate the drill wh'eneVer desired with theminimum amount of labor and without intlerruptingthe operation;
' Fromithe'above description it will be apparent that I have produced a simple device that can. be applied: to any? existing air drill without the necessity of changing the latter the least. I
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A lubricating device for mechanisms adapted" to' be operated by compressed air comprising, in combination, a tubular body member adapted to be connected in an air line conecting' source of compressed air to a machine, the body member being provided with stopcock adjacent the end earest the. air supply, Said body member having a circular recess in one side thereof and an openingof smaller diameter. than the recess connectin the latter with; the passageway in the %odjyjmember, a perforated, disk, in the, bottom of; said recess, a, cylinder thread dly connected. to, the wall of the recess, a cap, threadedly connected to the outer surfaces of the cylinder, a piston. within said cylinder, and a threaded; stem connected to, the piston, said stem being, threadedly connected with the cap. whereby; the rotation of the stem will move the, piston within the cylinder,
In testimony. whereof I- aflix my signature.
ADOLFH NELSON.
