J- D. LAWRENCE ET AL TAL HANDLES Filed OC CH 11, 1920 METHOD OF FORMING SHEET ME SUM n Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED STATES I 1,538,438 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. LAWRENCE AND STANLEY W. NICHOLSON, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE DURA COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
METHOD OF FORMING SHEET-METAL HANDLES.
Application filed October 11, 1920. Serial No. 416,246.
To all (P/H)?- it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN D. LmvunNcn and STANLEY TV. NICHOLSON, both citizens of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useiul Improvementsin Methods of Forming Shect-Metal Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a method of forming sheet metal handles and has an especial application to the forming of a handle for actuating window control mechan ism on a motor vehicle.
in the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view, of the blank from which the handle is to be formed;
Figure 2 is a view of the same subsequent to the first stamping operation showing the cups or depressions formed by said first operation;
Figure 3 is a side View of the blank as shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4: is a side view showing the form assumed by the blank subsequent to the sec ond stamping operation;
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are cross sections respectively taken. on lines 55, 6-6 and 7-7 of Figure 4;
Figure 8 is a side view of the completed handle.
It will be observed that the initial blank consists of the flat sheet metal stamping A having an enlarged circular portion B at one extremity and having at its other extremity a somewhat sma ler enlarged portion G which is of a conventional heart shape except that it lacks the pointed 'portion. The enlargement C is recessed as in dicated at D along the central line of the blank. The first stamping operation produces a cup-shaped recess E centrally in the circular enlargement B, said recess having a tapering wall E. Also there are produced by said first stamping operation two shallow depressions F in the enlargement G symmetrically located at each side of the center lineot the blank.
The second stamping operation transforms the center portion or. stem of the lank to a U-shape and places the opening f the U-shaped stem in communication vith the cup-shaped recess E. Also the two A handle thus formed possesses a high,
degree. of strength, a pleasing appearance and may be produced in quantities at a comparatively low expense.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. The method of forming a handle consisting in first forming a sheet metal blank having enlarged end portions, one of which is circular, -producing by an initial stamp-.
ing operation a cup shaped recess in said circular end portion and a pair of symmetrical recesses at each side of the center line of the blank in the other enlarged end portion thereof, imparting a U-shape to the center portion of the blank by a second stamping operation and by the same operation bending the symmetrically recessed portions into opposed relation.
2. The method of forming a handle comprising forming a' sheet metal blank having enlarged end portions one of which is circular, producing a cup-shapeddepression centrally in said circular end portion by an initial stamping operation and by the same operation producing symmetrical depressions in the other end portion one at each side of the. center line of the blank, imparting a U-shape to the center portion of the blank by a second stamping opergtion and by the same operation bending said symmetrically recessed portions at one end into opposed relation and imparting agradual curvature to the center portion of the blank by a third operation and by the same oper-' ation bending the opposed end portions thereof at an acute angle-to the center portion.
3. The method of forming a stamped sheet metal handle comprlslng the forming of the blank having an enlarged circular portion at one end and an enlarged portion at its other end at an approximate heartshape, said last-mentioned end having a recess along the center line of the blank, forming a cup-shaped recess centrally in said center portion by an initial stamping operation and forming symmetrical depressions by the same operation in the heart-shaped end portion of each side of the center line, and by subsequent operation imparting a U-shape to the center portion of the blank and folding said heart-shaped portion substantially upon the. center line to establish an opposed relation between the symmetrical recess thereof.
4. The method of forming a stamped sheet metal handle consisting 1n first forming a sheet metal blank having enlarged end portions producing by an initial stamping operation a recess in one of said end portions and symmetrically arranged recess in the other of said end portions and imparting by a second stamping operation a U- shape to the center portion and to said lastmentioned end portion of the blank.
5. The method of forming a handle comprising forming a sheet metal blank'having enlarged end portions, stamping a recess in one of said end portions and a pair of symmetrically arranged recesses in the other of said GIIdPOl'tlOIlS and on opposite sides of the center line of said blank, channeling said blank by folding a portion of said blank along its center line and bringing said symmetrically arranged recesses into opposed relation.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
JOHN D. LAVVRENGE. S. W. NICHOLSON.
