Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. MICHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county Vof Cuyahoga and State of Chio, have invented va certain new and useful Improvement in Focusing Devices for Automobile Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exantdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
yThis invention is a novel construction of device for focusing the incandescent .lamp of automobile lamps, the Object being to provide a simple and eicient device which Awill operate to move the socket back and forth in a straight line without tilting.
Heretofore adjustable focusing devices have been made which move the socket back and forth but owing to one inaccuracy or another have the tendency to tilt the lamp up or down, thereby throwing the filament out of focus and it is with the object of avoiding this tilting motion that the present invention has been devised.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawing A indicates the lamp case, B the reflector therein, C the incandescent lamp which is fitted into the yusual construction of socketv DV and this v socket in turn fits within a sleeve E projecting rearwardly from the reflector pro vided with an offset-portion'forming a guideway for the purpose hereinafter fully described.

The bar F fits into the notched portion G* of the plate G and the lower end thereof works between the converging fingers G2 and this plate is vcentrally threaded as shown at G3 into which screws the forward end of the screw H, this screw being projected centrally through-the rear end of the casing'as most clearly shown In practice I prefer by means of a spiral springl I, the forward end of which bears against the Vplate Cr while the rear end thereof bears against the in-k terior of the case, the normal tendency of said spring serving to maintain the various parts in their proper assembled positions and prevent vibration.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a casing having a reiiector provided with a sleeve offset to form a guide- Way, a socket slidably mounted in said sleeve having an operating bar secured to the side thereoil extending into said guideivay, said operating bar being provided with an angled apertured rear end, a plate having a notch to receive said bar and oppositely disposed fingersto embrace said bar, said plate beingprovided with a threaded bore and an adjusting screw carried by the casing WorkingY through said apertured bore 'for adjusting said socket.

In a device of the kind described, the combination With a reflector, sleeve, socket, and casing, of a screw working through the casing', a plate through which the forward end of the screw passes, a spring surrounding said scren7 and bearing against the casing and plate, a bar connected to said socket, the rear end of said bar being angled and apertured, said angled end of the bar engaging` the plate, said plate being notched to re ceive said bar and provided with lingers to embrace said bar, the aperture in the end of the bar being larger than the diameter oi' the screw whereby a loose connection between the plate and bar is obtained.

A lamp comprising a casing having a reflector provided with a horizontally disposed sleeve oiiset to form a longitudinal guideway, a socket slidably mounted within said sleeve having a bar secured to the side thereof extending into said guideivay for preventing said socket from rotating Within said sleeve, said bar extending rearwardly and provided with a depending angled apertured end, a plate having a notch to receive the horizontal portion of said bar and provided With fingers to embrace the depending end thereof, said plate having a threaded bore` a screw mounted in said casing extending through the aperture of said bar and Working in the threaded bore of said plate for adjusting said socket Within said sleeve and a coiled spring disposed between said casing and the depending end of said bar.
