Description
S. C. HAMLIN. Washing-Machines.
Patented Aug. 4,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON O. HAMLIN, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,821, dated August 4, 1874 application filed September 6, 1873.
lowing is a speoiiication:
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of machines for the purpose of cleansing textile fabrics;
A and its object is -to render such work more easy to accomplish, and more certain in the result.
The invention consists in the combination of a corrugated roller and an endless corrugated platform, running, like an endless chain, over two drums, in a box or tub, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure l is a perspective View of a washing-machine with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one end of the roller, drums, and endless platform. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through the center of the roller, drums, and endless platform.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a water-tight box, of any suitable size, shape, or material. Into the sides of this box is journaled the corrugated roller B, in such a manner that the springs a will hold the roller down, and at the same time allow it to rise, if
necessary. Greater resistance by these springs can be produced by means of the set-screws b. A little below the axis of this roller, and on each side thereof, are suitably journaled into the sides of the box the drums O', out away in the center cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, to allow the water to pass freely through the corrugated platform, while the ends of the drums are enlarged, as shown in Fig. 2, to act as bearings for the said platform. O is a corrugated endless platform, composed of a series of round, oval, or halfround slats or rods, d, the ends of which are secured to the links h of a iiat chain in the usual manner of making such platforms. This platform passes around the two drums O', and under the roller B, which latter is rotated by the crank D.
The operation lof this machine is so simple that a description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the revolving` roller B, adapted to move vertically in the sides of the case, with the endless platform, the roller B being adapted to depress the platform in the center, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
