UNITED STATES SVEN GUSTAF WIN'GrQUIST, OF GOTTENBORG, SWEDEN.
vANE PUMP.
Application led February 27, 1923. Seria1No.l621,578.
To all whom z't may concer/n.' v j Be it known that I, SVEN GUsTAF WING- Sweden, residing at Vasagatan 46, Gottenwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vane pumps, which comprisel a stator and a rotor and working vanes, and has for its object to provide a means whereby the position of the pumping surfaces may be controlled to effect, as desired, either idle running or positive pumping action.
According to the invention the extent of the radial movement of the working vanes is regulated by suitable cam surfaces, the position of which with relation to the working vanes may be automatically. adjusted by means of one or more centrifugal governor weights acting against a counterbalancing spring or springs.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein one embodiment of a vane pump according to this invention is shown; Fig. 1 isfan axial section of the vane pump. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof having thel side cover removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section along the line 3-3 viewed from the right in Fig. 1.
Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show in enlarged scale various modifications of the cam surfaces 13. lThe vane pump sho-wn in the drawing is of the double acting type and comprises in known manner a stator 1, provided with working surfaces 2, 3 and abutments 4, 5. Within such stator is rotatably mounted a rotor 6, provided with radially movable vanes 7 said vanes carrying guide rollers 8,
i which co-operate lwith internal cam surface vanes will be under common control.
10, provided in the stator cover 9, to positively limit the outward movement of the vanes. The vanes 7 are acted on by springs 11 tending to maintain the rollers 8 in contact with the'aforementioned cam surface 10 and by this means thevanes at the proper radius to vcontact with the working' surfaces 2 and 3. The vanes 7 are according to the invention each provided near their inner extremities with an integrally formed guide lug 12, co-operating with eccentrically ,disposed internal cam elements 13, preferably combined in a common cam ring 14 rotatable with relation to the rotor 6, whereby all the The cam ringY 14'supported by arms 19 extending radially from a central hub portion 20 Aof special form, the object of which will be presently made clear. Pivotally connected to the rotor 6 are bell cranks 21, one arm 15 of each being formed as a governor weight which is acted upon in the direction of the rotor center by a tension spring 16 `fastened dividual vane controlling cam surfaces 13 will be rotated in a clockwise direction, which is obviously the case as shown in Fig. 3. The cam surfaces 13 have such a form as to permit upon a rotation of ring 14, a progressivelyV greater or lesser radial movement of the workin vanes 7, depending upon the direction o rotation of the ring. The cam ring inthe position illustrated permits the maximum outward movement of the vanes 7 in which position they come in contact with the working surfaces 2, 3, in the stator 1. In Fig. 3, the governor weights 15 are shown as having at a certain speed, through the/action of centrifugal force, been moved outwardly against the action of the.
spring 16, causingar1ns17 to rotate the ring 14 carrying internal cam surfaces 13 to the position described in which contact may exist between the working vanes 7 and the working surfaces 2, 3. In thisposition the pump is functioning with full eiiciency. If now we suppose the speed of rotationof the rotor 6 to be decreased, the centrifugalforce of the weights 15 will also decrease and said force will,`- at a certain reduced speed of rotation, be overcome by the tension of the springs 16. The resulting movement of the bell cranks 21, causes the cam ring 14 to be rotated to a position in which the radial movement of the vanes?, .will be limited, so that contact with the working surfaces cannot take place and, consequently, the pump will run' idle or at greatly reduced eficiency depending upon the clearance between the vanes and working surfaces. By
the described control of the vanes 7 by means Y of the cam ring 14, the radial movements of the vanes take place smoothly and without any risk of shock against the working surfaces 2, 3.
Obviousl the invention is applicable to pumping evices in which it is desired to effect idle running at more than one speed range, with a positive pumping action between such idle running4 ranges, or devices in which it is desired to effect idle running above a certain speed. In the latter. case the cam surfaces 13 should be designed in such manner as to permit, in the position which they occupy up to a certain speed, contact between'the working vanes and the working surfaces, but in their position at a higher speed, through their automatic movement, to prevent such contact. l In the former case two ranges of idle running, for eX- ample, may be provided by designing cam surfaces 18 with two vane lifting humps i with a non-lifting dwell between, which portions may be successively brought into action as the cams are caused to move in one direction or the other by a change in the speed of rotation of the pump with the consequent automatic shifting of the governor weights as has been fully explained.
Throughout the foregoing specification, and in the .following claims, the terms rotor and stator are used merelyl in the relative sense. In the carrying out of the invention it is obviously immaterial las to which of the two co-acting elements, between which the pumping action occurs, is stationary or whether eithei' be absolutely stationary, the only requirement being that as between the'two there `is a relative motion, or, as has been stated, one withl respect to the other'is relatively stationary.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the preferred embodiment which is described in the foregoing, but is susceptible of various adaptations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention andl within the scope of the following claims. 'f
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is v 1. In a vane pump comprising a stator and a rotor and .workin vanes movable radiallyv 00 ,radially or substantially radially in one of said parts, the other part lbeing provided with one or more working surfaces co-operating with said radially movable vanes, and means comprising springs, movable weights and cam members adjustably connected to Asaid rotor for positively limiting the radial movement of said vanes in the direction Vtowards lthe said working surfaces, the position of said cam members with relation to the working vanes being automatically conescape means to permit direct communication between the presure and suction sides of the pump by preventing fluid tight engagement of the normally coacting working parts of said rotor and stator.
4. A vane pump comprising a stator, a
` rotor, and pumping vanes', said vanes pei'- lforming generally radial movements in the course of the normal pumping cycle, and escape means comprising auxiliary vane control means to prevent, atY certain speeds, normal operating contact between the vanes and thev working surfaces of the pump.
5. A vane pump comprising a stator, `a
rotor, and pumping vanes, said vanes performing generally radial movements in the course Vof the normal pumping cycle, and automatic escapemeans comprising `a cam ring, the position of which is controlled by centrifugal force to permit, at certain speeds,
'direct communication between the pressure and suction sides of the pumpby `preventing fluid-tight engagement of the normally coacting working parts of said rotor and stator.
6. `A vane pump. comprising a stator, a
rotor, and pumping vanes, said vanes performing generally radial movements in the course of the normal pumping cycle, and automatic escape means comprising a cam ring the position of which is controlled by the spring ballasted centrifugal governor to permit, at certain speeds, direct communication between the pressure and suction sides of the pump by preventing fluid-tight engagement of the normally coacting working parts of said rotor and stator. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
