Description

L. YENTIS ET AL LAMP SHADE HOLDER Filed April m, 1924 ATTORNEY Patented May 12, 1925.
UNITED STATES LOUIS YENTIS AND WILLIAM LANGE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAMP-SHADE HOLDER.
Application filed April 14, 1924. Serial No. 706,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LouisYnn'ris and WILLIAM LANGE, citizens, respectively, of the United States and Germany, residing in New York city, county of New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shade Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Our invention relates to lamp shade holders and refers particularly to shade holders of a revoluble, or folding character.
Lamp shade holders suitable for use with electric bulb standards comprise a plurality of uprights attached to the lamp standards and capable of carrying a lamp shade.
Devices of this character are, therefore, somewhat bulky when attached to the lamp standard and because of their light construc tion are usually liable to be bent, or broken, during shipment unless packed with exceptional care.
In the employment of electric light bulbs careful wiring with the bulb socket is necessary and lamp shades of a permanent and unfoldable character interfere with the ready and careful wiring of the bulb socket, be-
cause the uprights of the holder prevent, or
interfere with, an easy approach to the lamp socket.
This objection is emphasized by the fact that the shade holder is usually fixedly attached to the lamp standard by the socket it self, and hence, the latter must be wired while the holder is in position.
The device of our invention overcomes all of the described, and other, objectionable features and presents a means whereby an effective and efficient lamp shade holder may be employed and fixedly attached to a lamp standard without interference with the easy and proper wiring of the lamp socket.
Our device also possesses the valuable feature of occupying but little space in packing, coupled with practical protection from injury and damage during shipment.
A consideration of our specification and the accompanying drawings will explain and indicate the valuable attributes of the device of our invention.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the device of our invention, similar parts are designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a plan view of our device in operative position, partly in section for clearness of description. 1
Figure 2 is a plan View of Figure 1.in folded position.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of shade holder of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a broken vertical section 'of a modification of our device.
The particular form of the device of our invention, illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, comprises a base 10 having'the two upwardly extended end members 11, 11. Each end member 11 has a vertically elongated opening 12. The upper portion ofeach end member 11 has two outwardly extended wings 13, 13. The base 10 has a threaded opening 1.4 through which the base 15 of the lamp socket 16 can be threaded into a corresponding opening in the top of the standardlY, thus firmly positioning the base member thereto.
The shade frame 1.8, formed so as to extend around the lamp 19, has two inwardly extended ends 20, 20, each having a reduced portion 21 and a terminal member 22.
The terminals 22, 22 are of such size and shape as to allow them to be introduced through the openings 12, 12 when the shade holder 18 is in a horizontal position, but being capable of passage therethrough when the shade holder is in vertical position.
The shade holder, therefore, can be affixed to the base ends 11, 11 by such horizontal introduction followed by a vertical inclination of the holder.
The shade support 18 is made of steel, or some other resilient material, so that when it is in vertical position it will be placed between the wings 13, 18 and thus held in position from which it is removable by revolution only by the exertion of sufficient pressure to spring it out of the recess formed by the wings 13, 13,
The shade holder 18 carries the upwardly extended threaded member 23 capable of receiving a lamp shade.
We prefer to have the relationship between the standard 17 and the shade support 18 of such a character as to allow the placement of the latter free from abutment with the surface upon which the standard 17 rests when the shade support is in its utmost the base
lamp socket and that it adapts itseli particularly to a minimum amount of space for packing purposes, coupled, with safety from breakage. A
The modification of our device, illustrated E gane s similar te hat bov (19 scribed with the exception that. the shade support 18 is pivotally attached to the base ends 11 at 24, 24, thus allowing, revolution without disengagement,
We do notlimit ourselves to the partic ular size, shape, numberelr a rangement of parts, as shown and described as theseare given simply as; a means fo c eanly d fini g our invention.
