Description

M. F. LANGWORTHY SPRAYER Filed March 4, 1920 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN F. LANGWOR'IHY, OF DETROIT,'MICHIGAN.
SPRAYER.
Application filed March 4, 1920.
To all 1071 am it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN F. LANG- WORTI-IY, a resident of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and the State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sprayers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a sprayer, and more particularly to a doubleacting sprayer comprising two barrels fastened together in parallel, a piston operating in one barrel which is in communication with the other, and means for spreading the jets at their delivery.
The invention consists of a double acting pump embodying parallel barrels, a piston operating in one, a tank, tubes having connection with both barrels, the parts being 01 such construction and arrangement as to as sure a continuous discharge when the device is in operation.
The invention consists of the novel fea-- tures, details of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double acting pump embodying the invention. Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Figure 3 is an end elevation of the sprayer tank and barrels.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail the device comprises barrels 1 and 2 which have a parallel arrangement and are disposed in close relation. Piston 3 operates in barrel '1. To the exterior end of piston rod 6 is connected a handle 1. The piston, 3 upon being raised draws a charge of air into the barrel 1 through the opening 5 at the same time forcing the column of air above the pie; ton 3 through the opening '7 where it com} presses with the air in barrel 2, the compres; sion creating a discharge from opening 8,
Serial No. 363,131.
Piston 3, upon being forced toward opening 5 creates a discharge through opening 5 at the same time draws a charge of air in through opening 8 of barrel 2. Thus is created an alternating discharge from the barrels 1 and 2. The piston rod 6, moves in a stuffing box 9, of barrel 1, and carries piston 3.
A tank 10 is connected to the barrels 1 and 2 in any suitable manner, one end of the tank being so placed that jet tubes 11 and 12 projecting therefrom terminate next to the openings 5 and 8 of barrels 1 and 2 so that contents from the tank 10 can issue from the tubes 11 and 12 across the paths of openings 5 and 8 for the distribution of such contents. An air chamber 13 at the end of barrel 1 insures against moisture getting into the barrel so that the piston 3 is free from same.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and ma ner of operation of the device will be clearly understood.
What is claimed is A spraying device comprising a large pump barrel having an end opening and a side opening, a reciprocable piston in said pump barrel, a small barrel mounted against an outer Wall of said large pump barrel, said small barrel having an end opening and a side opening with said side opening registering with the side opening of said large pump barrel, a tank mounted against outer walls of said large and small barrels, and jet tubes at one end of said tank and having the jets thereof in proximity to the end openings of said large and small barrels.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
