IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 153,763, dated August 4, 1874; application filed July 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL EWING, of Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Churn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which I Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
The invention relates to means whereby the dashers of plunge-churns may be speedily, conveniently, and accurately adjusted to the quantity of cream which constitutes the churning at any one time, and also whereby a detachable churn itself may be easily and securely fastened to a frame just previous to the commencement of the churning operation.
These means will first be fully described,
and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents a churn, B, its table or platform, and G G inwardly-concaved blocks, between which it is held; The inside block, 0, is stationary, while the outside one, C, is hinged at c to turn horizontally, and open-slotted at 0 On each side, of the slot are the beveled faces 0 0 against which work the subjacently and correspondingly beveled shoulders (I d of the cap D, which is pivoted at d in a slot, b, of the platform.
By this construction, the cap D, which is otherwise liable to be jostled out, and has a tendency to allow some play to the hinged block 0, is caused to hold it rigidly in place, thus rendering the churn immovable during the churning process.
The rod E, rising from the dasher inside, passes, as usual, through a hole in cover F, and is pivoted between the prongs g g of the yoke G. The latter has two heads, g, between which work the eccentric H, and which are connected by the parallel strips g 9 Between these strips and heads is protruded the ordinary crank-shaft I, which is end-threaded, and provided, not far from the protruding end,
with a fixed collar, J. Against this collar bears one side of the eccentric H, which has a radial slot, preferably'but not necessarily closed. By moving the slotted eccentric radially its center of motion is made to approximate more or less to that of the drive-shaft I, according as it is intended to raise and depress the dasher more or less.
In order to fasten the eccentric disk at any point of adjustment,I employ a tube, K, whose inner end bears against the disk, while its outer end is provided with a flange, k. L is a Washer, which may or may not be used, and M a thumb-nut, which works on the end of shaft I. By screwing and pressing the inner end of nut against the washer, or directly against the outer end of tube K, the disk is eifectually clamped to the shaft at any desired point of eccentricity to the latter.
As in all farming establishments, and families who make their own butter, the quantity of cream made will vary at different seasons and often from temporary causes, it is very important that the throw of the dasher should be susceptible of a quick and easy adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination, with platform B having slot 1), the inwardly-,concaved stationary block (J, and the correspondingly-concaved block 0 hinged at c to turn horizontally, slotted at c, and having beveled faces 0 c of the cap D having subjacently-beveled shoulders 01 d, and pivotedat d in the platform, as and for the purpose described.
2. The yoke Gr composed of prongs g g, between which is pivoted the dasher-rod, heads g g, and parallel strips g 1 and the radiallyslotted disk H, in combination with flanged tube K k, nut M, and end-threaded drive-shaft I, as and for the purpose specified.
