UNITED STATES 1 1,537,599 PATENT: OFFICE.
OTTO J. GROEHN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO CLAYTON AND LAMBERT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION' OF MICHIGAN.
FLAME-STRAIGHTENING TORCH BURNER. 7
Application filed April 25, 1921. Serial No. 464,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, OTTO J. GROEHN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in .the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flame- Straightening Torch Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to burners and refers more particularly to burners of the type known as torch burners for blow torches or the like.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide an improved burner of the general character above referred to which will direct the flame from the forward end of the combustion chamber in the proper direction. Other objects of the invention are, to provide a construction which will be convenient for location with other parts of the burner and which will permit of a simplified and improved construction of burner. The invention also resides in such features of construction and arrangements and combinations of parts as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation view partly in section;
Figure 2 is a top plan view shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4- of Figure 1.
Describing in detail the particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, A designates a torch burner connected by a fitting B to the tank B in any suitable manner. The burner comprises a combustion chamber C in which the vaporized fuel from the nozzle D is mixed with air and burned, the flame being projected from the forward end C of the combustion chamber. supply of fuel from the tank B to the discharge nozzle D is through a vaporizing chamber or passage E past the control valve F and through the passages F and F to the nozzle. The outlet opening of the latter is kept free from accummulation of carbon or other obstructions by means of a clean-out member or pin G carried by the stem G of the parts The V which at its outer end terminates at a hand wheel G This clean-out pin is preferably so arranged as not to perform the functions of a valve, owing to the difiiculty of maintaining a valve seat and valve at this particular portion of the burner. For this reason the valve F is located at a point more remote from the nozzle D and is carried by an adjustable stem H having a hand wheel H. It will be noticed that in the particular construction shown in the drawings the stem H is diagonally downwardly and sidewardly inclined thus permitting the hand wheel H to be relatively close to the hand wheel G without interfering with the latter. This novel arrangement also permits the use of the two stems and hand wheels G and G and H and H without in any way interfering with the convenient location of the pump handle I.
In torches of this general character difficulty is often encountered in discharging the flame from the forward end of the combustion chamber to the exact direction desired. Obviously if the discharge nozzle is out of axial. alignment with the discharge end of the combustion chamber unequal combustion will take place and in many cases the flame is unequally distributed at the outlet end of the nozzle. The present novel constrution of combustion chamber not only improves the combustion within the chamher but also serves to straighten out the flame and insure its proper delivery at the discharge end G. As shownin Figure 1 the combustion chamber C is provided with baffles J, J, J 2 and J each of which extends inwardly and preferably has its rear wall forwardly inclined as at K. It will also be noticed that the bafiles or straightening flanges J and J are of such size that their ports L and L are of smaller diameter than the port L and that this port L wh1le larger than the ports L and L is smaller than the port L in the forward baflleor straightening flange. Also the combustlon chamber is provided with air inlet ports or openings M, M, M and M which'are located preferably between the respective baffles. The entire arrangement is one which because of the bafiling arrangement insures complete combustion and the delivery of the hottest flame at the forward or discharge end C and also of the straightening out of the flame so that it is directed axially of the combustion chamber C and in a desireddirection at the time it passes between-the parallel WilllSN of the forward end C.
As shown in detail in Figures 3; theseil'v Wardly projecting flanges J J J and J are preferably formed as substantially circular flanges but having" recessed portion 0 at the lower side. However, except as ultimately set forth inthe cla'iiir I do notdesire to limit the invention to the particular details of construction shown;
What I el aim' a's my" invention is: I n burner for blow torches'or the like",
the combination with a combustion chamber having a fuel discharge nozzle at the rear portion; of an adjustable clean-out member for said discharge n0z'zle,- a valve beneath and to one side of the nozzle and clean-out member for controlling t-he'supply of fuel to said nozz1e;-and' a plurality of par: llelbai fles disposed in said chamber'and having ports formed therein to direct the flame toward the forward end of said chamber, said baflles being spaced from said discharge 11ozzl'e and said chamber having air inlet ports formed therein between said bullies.-
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
