F. L. WHEELING SIGHT AND BARREL PROTECTOR FOR GUNS AND RIFLES Filed Sept. 4, 1924 Patented ay 12,1923...
FRANK L. WHEELING, OF I JOS ANGE LES, CALIFORNIA.
SIGHT AND BARREL'PROTECTOR FOR GUNS AND RIFLES.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. WHEELING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Si ht and Barrel Protectors for Guns and R es, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices adapted to protect sights upon gun barrels.
It is an ob ect of the invention to provide a suitable plug adapted to be inserted into the forward end of a gun barrel and which will prevent dirt or foreign matter from entering the gun barrel.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device which will stop up the forward end of the barrel, preventing the admission of forelgn matter and which will be so devised as to protect the bead or forward sight upon the gun barrel.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the followin detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a gun on which the improved device is applied.
Fig. 2, is a partial top plan view of the gun shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4, is a perspective of the end of the gun barrel shown in Figures 2 and 3, to which the device is applied.
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the improved sight protector.
Fig. 6, is a perspective of a modification thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts, the improved sight protector comprises an elongated plate 10 which is of a breadth equal to the breadth of an ordinary shotgun S. Upon the face of the plate 10 is secured a pair of felt washers 11 and 12 by means of suitable bolts 13 extending through the plate 10 and the washers l1 and 12 and secured by means of nuts 14 bearing against suitable washers 15. These washers 11 and 12 are so spaced upon the plate 10 that each may be inserted into one of the barrels of a. double barrelled shotgun and be frictionally retained therein. The

gaging washers secured thereon and which has a resilient finger extending over and protecting the forward sight of the gun.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 which 15 especially adapted for rifles or single barrelled shotguns, the base 10 which has a single washer 11 secured thereon and which has the upstanding portion 16*, inclined portion 17* and foot portion 18 similar to those in the device illustrated in Fig. 5.
The felt washers are preferably impregnated with an anti-rust oil, such as a good quality of thin lubricating oil.
It is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A sight and 11 barrel protector comprising a plate a apted to be placed over the muzzle of a gun barrel, means associated with said plate adapted to be inserted into said barrel for maintaining said plate over the muzzle of the barrel, and a finger secured to said plate and extending rearwardly from the plate over the sight upon the barrel.
2. A sight and gun barrel protector comprising a plate adapted to be placed over the muzzle of a gun barrel, means associated with said plate adapted to be inserted into said barrel for maintaining said plate over the muzzle of the barrel, and a finger secured to said plate and extending rearwardly from the plate over the sight upon the barrel, said finger extending downwardly in back of said sight so as to engage upon said barrel.
3. A sight and gun barrel protector comprising a plate adapted to be placed over the end of a gun barrel, a plurality of washers secured upon said plate, said washers being adapted to be inserted within the barrels of the gun and to be frictionally retained therein.
4. A sight and 11 barrel protector comprisin a plate a apted to be placed over the en of a gun barrel, a plurality of washers secured :pon said plate, said Washers being adapt to be inserted within the barrels of the gun and to be frictionally retained therein, and a resilient finger secured to said plate adapted to protect a forward sight of the gun.
5. A sight and gun barrel protector comprisin means 'ada ted to close the muzzle end 0 a gun barre and a finger extending rcarwardly from said means over the sight upon the gun barrel.
6. A sight and gun barrel protector comprisin means adapted to close the muzzle end 0 a n barrel, and a" finger extending rearwardlj y from said means over the sight upon the gun barrel, said finger engagmg upon said barrel in back of said sight.
Lea-agar? 7 A sight and gun barrel protector comprising means ada ted, to close the muzzle ends of the barre s of a a'double barreled gun, and means extending rearwardly from said means over the top of the barrel and over the front sight of the gun so as to protect said sight.
8. A'sight protector for-gull barrels, comprising a finger adapted to be secured upon the muzzle end of a gun, said fin er extending rearwardly over the front slght of the gun.
9. A gun barrel protector comprising a plate adapted to be placed over the muzzle of a un, a pin secured to said plate and extending into the barrel, and a felt washer mounted about said pin presenting a substantially cylindrical surface adapted to engage the interior surface of a gun barrel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FRANK L. WHEELING.
