IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MOVING RAILWAY-CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,736, dated August 4, 1874 application filed January 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, of Paxton, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved (Jar-Movcr, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a little frame, preferably of metal, adapted to be readily connected, by hooks, clips, or other equivalent devices, temporarily to a car, and having a crank-shaft, reducing-gears, and a chain-wheel mounted in it, with a chain to work on the chain-wheel, and having a griper at one end, to be carried along the rail in advance of the car, and attached for holding fast while the car is drawn along by winding the chainwheel, which, by holding fast to the chain as it rolls along it, pulls the car readily. to the point where the chain is fastened to the rail. The little frame also carries a box below the chain-wheel, into which the slack chain delivered from the chain-wheel falls to be carried along, and prevented from dragging under the car.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and practicable apparatus for moving heavy cars short distances by handpower.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved car-mover; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of it; also a short piece of a rail, showing the manner of connecting the chain to it.

A represents a small frame made of metal bars, and having at one end a small T-head, B, for attaching to the end of a car, say by eye-studs or clips O, or any other suitable means, so that the frame will be held up horizontally by the shoulder D. E is a chainwheel on said frame, on which a large chain, F, having a griper for fastening it to the rail to be pulled, to pull the car by the turning of the wheel, for which the large reducing-wheel H, pinion I, and the cranks J are provided. The chain-wheel is designed to gear with the shaft of wheel H by a clutch, so that it can readily be thrown out of gear when the chain is to be drawn outfrom the machine to avoid turning these wheels and cranks, and save the labor. L is a pocket suspended from the frame where the chain is delivered to receive the slack, and hold it ofl' the ground.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The car-moving machine, comprising the frame A, chain-wheel E, chain F, griper Gr, wheels H I, and the hand-cranks, combined and adapted for connection to a car, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the carmoving machine, of the chain-pocket L, substantially as specified.
