The features of the invention, as shown, are' embodied in an adding machine of the Dalton type which is provided near its upper'rear portion with a transversely extending rock shaft 1 which supports a series of the .type carriers 2 of arcuate formation together occupy the usual position at the front of the machine and range from zero to nine inclu sive. The 'numeral keysare mounted upon the upturned forwards ends of key levers 7 which are fulcrumed in the usual manner at oint 71 (see Fig. 1), and each of the key evers,operates against the tension of a spring 10 and-at its rearend is provided with an upturned tappet'8 for the purpose of positioning the various stops 9 in the transversely movable carriage 10. The usual main operating shaft 11, which oarriesthe handle, is provided with a full stroke sector 12 which co-acts with a full strokepawl 13, so that a partial forwardmovement of the handle and shaft will be prevented. Riveted to the forward upper 'corner of the segment 25 is a. sto block 26 which, as shown in Fig.,3, norma y lies below the roller 24 and in position to sweep under said roller with the parts in the position indi cated. When, however, the roller 24 is deaif pressed as indicated in Fig. 4, the stop block 1 26 will abut directly against the rear end of the control pawl lever 22 and prevent any rocking movement of the segment 25, and

In an adding. machine the oombina'- tion of a main operating lever, stop mechani'sm associated therewith, nhmeral key levers, a universal control member adapted to be engaged by each of the numeral. key levers and moved to control the stop mechanisms', a special key. lever,- adapted to remain depressed during the movements of the operating shaft, said key lever adapted to impartan excess of movement to the universal control member and a latch mechanism ada ted to engage the universal control mem er when moved to its extreme position, to prevent a permature return of the special key lever, and'meansassociated with the operating shaft for releasing the latch at a predetermined point in the movement of the operating shaft, substantially as kcy'levers, and means for ptreventing movement of the operating sha when said control mechanism is moved throughone degree movement andffor permitting the operation of said shaft when said control mechanism is moved through a different degree of movement, substantially as de scribed.
13. In an adding mahine the combination of a main operating shaft, avkey lever adaptedto be restored to normal position before the operation of the operating shaft, a key leveradapted to remain depressed during the-operation of the operatin shaft,
universal control mechanism adapte to be moved .in varying degree by each of said key levers,-means for preventing movement of the operating .shaft when said control mechanism is moved through one degree of movement and for permitting the operation of said shaft when said control mechanism is moved through a different degree of movement, and latch mechanism adapted to engage and latch said control mechanism when in one of its positions of adjustment, sub stantially as described.

In an adding machine the combination of a main operating-shaft, a rock shaft, a universal bail bar'rigidly connected with the rock shaft, an arm rigid upon the rock shaft, a pivoted stop control lever provided near one end with a cam slot for engaging said-arm, a stop segment on the operating shaft adapted to engage-the pivoted stop control lever when in. one position and adapted to ride thereunder when in another os1tion,- and a series of-key levers adapted individually to engage the universal bail bar and depress the same'to cause the stop engaging arm to 'move to'stopping position, substantially as described.
15; In an adding machine the combina-- tion of a main operating'shaft, astop so"- ment carried by said shaft, a rock shaft, a universal bail bar carried by; the rock shaft, a. rocking arm carried the rock shaft, a pivoted stopcontrol lever provided with a cam slot engaged by said rocking arm, the formation of the cam being such that when the rockin arm is, imtially rocked 'the stop control ever will be moved to stopping position and thereafterupon a continued movement of the rock arm will be, restored to non-stopping position, and a special key and connections for'imparting to the bail bar the extreme degree 0 movement, substantially as described.

In an adding machine the. combination of a main operating shaft, a stop segment carried by said shaft, a rock shaft, v universal bail bar carried by the rock s aft,- a rocking arm carried by the rock shaft, a .pivoted stop control lever provided with a 'cam slot engaged by said rocking arm, the formation of the cam. being .such that when tlj1e=frocking arm zai's f initially rocked,' the stop control lever' 'will be moved to stopping position and thereafter upon a continued movement of the rock arm will be restored to non-stopping position, a special key and connections for imparting .to the bail bar the extreme degree of movement, and a latch bar adapted to engage and hold down the universal bail bar when moved to its extreme position, substantial ly as described.
