APPLIcAfr'ora. Y;
Application filed April 17, 1922, ySerial No. 553,507.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, STANLEY S. MrzNnn,
a citizen of 'the United States, residing at' Sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Applicators, of which. the following is .a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin applicators. The i'nain 'objects lof this inven tion are: i
j First, to provide an applicator which can be convenientlymanipulated to apply the medicament at the desired point, as in the nose, throat or ear, ior other cavity.
Second, 'to provide anlapplicatorin which the applicator tube 'or' barrel and rod or plunger are mounted on a'handle 'or stock, so 'that they may be uicllyv detached` and others substituted, eit i'er of the saine vor different size. i ,j
Third, to provide an ,applicatorhavingk a linger actuated lever for controlling the applicator rod or plunger, yand of fsuchform as to facilitate use without obstructing Fourth,t'o provide an applicator having an adjustable connection between the actuating lever and plu-nger so that the amount which 'the medicament carrier is projected maybe regulated.
Further objects and objects relating to' structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
A I accomplish the objectsof my invention bythe devices andmeans described inthe clearlydelined and ointed out in the claims. Y Av structure whic isla preferred embodi- .ment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accoinpanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a detail 'side -ilevati'on of my improved applicator, theV forward end of the applicator tube or barrel being shown in longitudinal section.-
Fig. II is a detail side' elevation, similar to Fig. I, with the applicator plunger in proliectfedposition. v l
Fig. IIIis a detail elevation similar to Fig. I, with portion in section, the main 1 frame being in vertical section on line 3-8 of Fig. IV and the slide member being in section 'on the slightly different plane of line `3 3 of Fig. V to show structural `details and the extended position being shown by 'dotted lines.
The invention is f Fig. IV is an venlarged detail transverse section Von a line 'corresponding to line -l ofFigIII showing the attaching nut by which the shank of the applicator tube is detacliably clamped in place. l
Fig. V is an enlarged detail vtransverse sectional view taken on line` 5-5 of Fig. III showing the details for clamping the applicator plungerv tothe slide member.
F ig. VI is a detail elevation view of the shank of they applicator -tube clamped 'in position on .the frame.
, In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, andthe sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines. l Referring to the drawings, the reference characterl indicates generally the stock or handle framevmemb'er, which is provided with iing-erholds 2` and 3 positioned so that the stock may be grasped between the thumb rand forelinger.
, The stock is provided with an vupwardly projecting seat 4 forA theshank of the apa` plicator tube 5. The applicator tube 5 is open at its rear end to receive a plunger rod 7 which, inpractice, may be a piece of wire adapted by roughening or otherwise to receive the medicament carrier 8 which maybe a piece of absorbent cotton twisted upon the rough end of the plunger.
The barrel 5 is opened laterally at 13 at its forward end deiiecting the `medicament carrier S as desired. Thesame can, ofcourse, be opened onrany side and for certain uses a simple straight tube is all'that is required, the straight tube being very effective forthe treatment of the'back of the throat. However, for substantially all uses the tube open at theside is preferred. l
The plunger is actuated by means of the slide 1S and trigger-like lever 15 pivoted on pivot screw 1G on thestockl. Lever 15 is slotted at 15 and engages'the cross-pinlS of the actuating slide 1S. The slide 1S is mounted 'upon the rod 19 to reciprocate in a plane parallel with the barrel. The slide has an upwardly and laterally projecting arm 20 provided with av hooked seat 21 to receive the plunger 7. The plunger 7 is adjustably secured to the slide by means'of the set screw Q2. A spring 23 returns the slide 1S to its initial position. .Y y y Vith the parts thus arranged, the, stock may be graspedbetween the thumb and for-- sov finger and the level' actuated like a trigger.
- The structure is very convenient and practical for use in `many relations. It being slightly oirset enables the user to sight under or over the barrel and see exactly what he is doing. rIhis instrument may be introduced through a speculum 'for treatment of the nose, throat, ear or other cavity or opening. It insures the correct application of' the medicine or acid used in treating the spot intended and no other than the diseased part.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:`
