frame 20 within the chamber 15. The for ward end 34' of the frame portion 21 is downturned and provides a pin orother device 35 for the securing of an end of a saw. blade 36 thereto the opposite end of said saw blade 36 being connected as by an adjustable device 37 to the depending end of the frame portion 26, and substantially as is illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. The provision of the novel type of frame portion 22 permits the use of a relatively long blade 36, since when the" frame 20 is in its most retracted position with respect'to the casing 13, as is illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, the frame portion 26 lies immediately below the lower wall 39 of the casing 13, and in over Gil lapping relation therewith, whereby the blade 36 is also in overlapping relation with said casing 13.
The saw reciprocating means 40 is provided as a part of the improved power operated saw C, which includes a worm wheel or gear 41 rotatably mounted as by a pin 42 within the chamber 15 of the casing 13, at the most rearward end thereof adjacent the handle 18. A worm shaft 44 is preferably rotatably mounted within the chamber 15, having opposite ends thereof carried by the top and bottom walls 45 and 39 respectively of the casing 13, so that said worm shaft is in meshing relation with the teeth of the gear wheel 41. In order to effect proper mounting of the worm 44, certain bearing lugs 46 have been provided extended inwardly of the chamber 15 and preferably integral with the casing 13. The 'top end of the worm shaft 34 extends outwardly of the top wall 45 of the casing 13, and is connected as by a universal joint 48 with a flexible drive shaft 49 of any approved type. A connect ing rod 50 is eccentrically pivoted, as at 51, to the worm gear 41, and at its other end is oscillatively connected, as at 52, to the cross bar 33 midway of the ends of the latter.
Referring to the supporting arrangement D, the same includes a substantially L-shaped frame member 52, which includes a leg 53,
of straight line formation, which is provided upon its rearward offset end 54 with a plate 55 adapted for detachable connection to a suitable lug 56 provided as a part of the easing 13. The other leg portion 57 of the frame member 52 depends forwardly of the saw 0, and has a ring shaped socket end 58 adapted for lateral sliding upon the horizontally positioned guide rod 59 which is supported upon a side 60 of the chopping block 10 in spaced relation therewith, as by supporting brackets 61. A diagonal cross brace may be provided for bracing the leg portions 53 and 57 of the frame member 52 to maintain them in stable relation.
Referring to the counter balance mechanism E, the same preferably includes a tubular guide barrel 66 which is vertically mounted, as by a bracket 67 the latter being connected in rigid manner upon the front surface 60 of the chopping block 10, so that the barrel 66 extends upwardly from the chopping surface 68 of block 10. The upper end of the tubular member 66 is preferably provided with a roller or pulley 69 adapted to receive a flexible cable 70 which is trained thereover. One end of the cable 70 may have a counter weight 71 thereon which is adapted for reciprocable disposition in the longitudinal passageway 72 of the tubular guide 66. The opposite end of the cable 70 is prefe ably attached, as by a clamping clip 73, to the guide member 52 adjacent its offset connecting end 54.
In operation, the flexible cable 49 is connected at its ends remote from the saw G to a suitable power source (not shown) as the shaft of a motor.
Upon operation of the shaft 49, the worm 44 will be rotated, so that the wheel 41 will be moved in order to reciprocate the saw frame 20 through the connecting rod 50, so that the blade 36 may travel back and forth in the ordinary manner for cutting purposes. The operator, of course, grasps the handle 18 and it is merely necessary to lower the saw C onto the article to be out, which is ordinarily mounted upon the block 10. This lowering operation is manually effected, since the counterweight 71 is adapted to facilitate upward swinging of the free end of the saw into the position substantially illus trated by the dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings. The saw C may be laterally adjusted over the chopping block 10 by reason of the lateral sliding connection of the frame 52. with the guide supporting bar 59, the
cable 70 permitting of this sliding due to its flexibility.
, From the foregoing description of this invention, it can be seen that a relatively simple, yet compact and practical power oper ated saw mechanism has been provided, which utilizes novel methods of mounting and arrangement of parts so that a full length saw blade may be utilized which will not interfere with the reciprocating mechanism thereof.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, may be made to the form of the invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a supporting arrangement having a handle thereon, a saw blade, a frame having upper and lower strips slidably extending through said supporting arrangement, the upper strip being provided with a downturned forward portion and adapted for connection with a saw blade, the lower strip having its forward end portion carried downwardly and then rearwardly and having its free end portion extending downwardly and adapted for connection with a saw blade, whereby a relatively long blade may be used which is adapted for exterior overlapping relation with respect to said supporting arrangement when in rearward position with respect thereto, and means carried by said supporting arrangement for reciprocation of said saw.
