IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRAULIC ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,709. dated August 4, 1874; application filed July 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR GRANVILLE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Hydraulic Elevators, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to employ the pressure of water in cities to operate the elevator for goods or passengers in buildings, thus dispensing with the use of a steam-engine, insuring great safety and rendering it unnecessary to employ a fireman or engineer.
I make use of a cylinder containing a piston connected to a rod that has rack-teeth upon it gearing into a pinion, the shaft of which has a band-wheel upon it serving to actuate the rope or band of the elevator. The watersupply is opened when the elevator is to be raised, and closed when it is stopped, and when the elevator is to be lowered the water is allowed to flow out from the cylinder.
My invention relates to a peculiar construc-' tion of rack-bar and pinion employed with such elevator and to devices for supporting the piston so as to lessen friction and wear.
1n the dischargepipe is an automatic springvalve which closes and lessens the orifice of discharge in proportion to the weight on the elevator, thereby preventing an acceleration of the speed when the elevator is heavily loaded.

The cylinder at is of suitable size and length, being proportioned to the pressure or head of water available and the weight to be raised and the height to which the elevator extends. The piston 11 is provided, by preference, with a cup-leather packing and made with a shoe, 0, into which is bolted a wooden piston rod or bar, d, of proper length, and resting upon the supporting-rollers of that are upon the bed a of the machine or other support, and beneath the shoe 0 is a roller, g, that supports the piston and bar and relieves the leather packing, and keeps the piston in its proper position and central to the cylinder throughout the whole length of its movement. The band-wheel his upon a shaft, t, supported in suitable bearings upon the bed a, and upon this shaft 1 is the pinion k, gearing into the teeth of a rack, I, that is bolted to the bar d, forming the pistonrod, and the pinion is made with cylindrical bearing-surfaces 2 at the ends, and the rack with flat surfaces 3 at each side and in the plane of the pitch-line of the teeth, so that the parts roll properly together, and the pistonrack and pinion rotate the shaft and band wheel as the piston of the cylinder is moved along by the pressure of the water, and the elevator raised, by the band or rope m, from such wheel h to the elevator, the said rope or band passing over the usual pulleys. The water is supplied to the cylinder through the pipe 1', and a faucet, opened or closed by a suitable connection at the elevator, admits water to raise the elevator or cuts it off to stop the elevator. The discharge is also regulated by a faucet, for allowing the elevator to descend.

that is kept open against a flow of water by a spring, and when that flow is sudden and the water accumulates in the pipe, the valve is partially closed, to check any sudden downward movement of the elevator.
I claim as my invention- 1. The self-acting yielding valve u, applied in the discharge water-way of a hydraulic elevatin g apparatus, for the purposes set forth.
- 2. The rack-bar l, with the flat surfaces 3 at the sides, and the pinion k, with the cylindrical ends 2, in combination with the piston b and cylinder at of the hydraulic elevating appa ratus, as set forth.
3. The roller g upon the'shoe c, in combination with the piston 11 and rack-bar l,-substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
