To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. I'IANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Easton, county of Northampton, and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a certainRoller Guide for Channeling Steels, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relatesto rock channeling machines and more particularly to that type of channeling machine in which a composite bit is employed consisting of a plurality of drill steels clamped'together in a reciprocatory chuck.
Channeling machines are usually of the reciprocating type in which the steel is adapted to reciprocate with the piston. When employing composite bits in this form of machine, it is desirable to guide the steels partly in order to keep their ends together and partly to properly direct them in the channel being out. Roller guides have heretofore been provided for guiding the steels but one objection to them is that they have not been of .a'form' to guide the steels in all directions. Also, it has been difficult to remove the steels for replacementwithout removing the entire guide. It is an object ofthis invention to provide a guide of which parts are removable without altering their adjustment so as to facilitate the removal of the drill steels and their replacement.
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and inpartpointed out hereinafter. y

The type ofrock channeling with which more particularly adapted to be used is provided with a reciprocating chuck A which the drill steel guide of this invention is channel. To this end there is provided a clamping plate C which fits over the sides and front of the steels B which is heldin place by suitable bolts D. Usually, a plurality of steels B are clamped together in the chuck, the steels having various shaped bits. apt to spread apart and in addition cause considerable wear on the pistonrod in its bearing. 1 In accordance with the practice" of this invention the guide comprises a base E which is adapted to be clamped as by means of the bolts F to a suitable part ofthe channeler frame G.- The base E supports an anti-friction roller TI on a shaft J, this roller being adapted to contact with and guide the steels B on their rearward faces.
'Thesteels B are guided against sidewise and frontward movement by suitable antifriction rollers K, L and O, which with the roller H encircles the steel. The rollers K, L and'Oare mounted on a supplementary portion P adapted to be secured to the base E and removable therefrom to remove and replace the steels B in the chuck A. The supplementary portion P is secured to the-base E by apair of bolts Q preferably parallel and having heads 1. Suitable apertures R are provided in the supplementary portion P to receive the bolts Q. Slots 2 terminating at If these steels are unguided, they are the rear in grooves 3 are arranged to receive the bolts Q so that when the nuts t are tightened the supplementary portion P is clamped fast in place on the base. which are secured to the supplementary porshaft W which is mounted transversely on a shaft W in the supplementary portion P. Preferably the roller 0 is flanged and formed in two parts which are adapted to be separted by suitable shims X in order to properly space the flanges of the roller, thus when the flanges become worn at the sides by Y the steels B, they may be brought closer together by removing one of the shims X and placing it at the end of the roller. Preferably the shaft on which the roller 0 is mounted is removable from the supple mentary portion P. To this end the adjacent ends of the supplementary portion are hollow and provided with caps Y which are removable when it is desired to-insert the shaft into position. The shaft W may fit loosely in the apertures Z and may be held by means of set screws Z) screwing through the supplementary portion P and adapted to bear against the shaft at the notches 0.
Lock nuts cl may be provided on the set screws Z). Adjacent the ends of the shafts W there may be provided oil chambers e which are adapted to be filled with oil through oil holes 7" provided with filler plugs g. The oil introduced into the chamber 0 is adapted to find its way along the shaft V and lubricate the bearing of the roller 0.
In order to hold the supplementary portion P more rigidly in its proper position at the base E, the adjacent faces of these two parts are provided with dove-tailing notches hand cooperating projections j which prevent sliding of the faces on each other.
The advantage of the construction is evident from the above description. The supplementary port-ion P is removable from the base E without changing the adjustment of the rollers H, K, L and in their bearings. The rollers K, L and O are removable with the supplementary portion P to provide sufficient room for the insertion of the steels 3 into the chuck A. The removal of the supplementary portion P is effected by mere ly loosening the two nuts on the studs Q after which the supplementary portion and the rollers mounted thereon are withdrawn :1 short distance on the bolts Q, and lifted from the slots 2. hen in position, the rollers K and L are additionally supported by the base E in the apertures V into which the ends of the shafts S project.
The shaft J upon which the roller H is adapted to rotate may be mounted in the same manner as the shaft W and is also providedwith an oiling chamber. There are provided the caps o coresponding in function to the caps Y and filling plugs 79, corresponding to the plugs y]. Set screws y are adapted to hold the shaft in position and are provided with lock nuts 1.

2 A guide for channeler steels comprising a base adapted to be mounted on a channeler, a supplementary portion removable from said base, a plurality of rollers adapted to encircle a channeler steel, one of said rollers being flanged and formed in two parts to permit adjustment of the spacing of said flanges and one of said rollers being mounted on said base.

A guide for channeler steels comprising a base adapted to be mounted on a channeler, a roller mounted on said base adapted to bear against the rear face of a channeler steel, a supplementary portion removable from said base, a shaft secured to said sup plementary portion at the side of said channeler steel and adapted to extend into said base, a roller on said shaft to contact with the side of said steel and removable with said supplementary portion.
4. A guide for channeler steels comprising a base, adapted to be mounted on a channeler, a roller mounted on said base adapted to bear against the rear faceof a channeler steel, bolts extending from said base, a supplementary portion adapted to be attached to said base on said bolts, and rollers on said supplel'nentary. portion adapted to guide said steel at the front and sides and removable with said supplementary portion.
5. A guide fer channeler steels comprising a base adapted to be mounted on a channeler, a roller on said base adapted to bear against the rear of a channeler steel, bolts extending outwardly from said base, a supplementary portion adapted to be sooured to said base by said bolts, a shaft on said supplementary portion extending into said base, and a roller on said shaft removable with said supplementary portion from said base.
6. A guide for channeler steels comprising a base adapted to be mounted on. a channeler, a roller on said base adapted to bear against the rear of a channeler steel, bolts extending outwardly from said base, a supplementaryportion adapted to be secured to said base by said bolts, a shaft on said supplementary portion extending into said base, a. roller on said shaft rcuiovable with said suppleincntary portion from said base, and a. flanged roller adapted to contact with the front of said steel and mounted on said sup 'ilementary portion.
7. A guide forchanneler steels comprising a base adapted to be mounted on a channeler, a roller on said base adapted to bear against the rear of a channeler steel, bolts extending outwardly from said base, a supplementary portion adapted to be socured to said base by said bolts, a shaft on the supplementary portion extending into said base, a roller on said shaft removable with said supplementary portion from said base, and a flanged roller adapted to contact with the front of said steel, said flanged roller being formed in two parts adapted to be separated by shims to adjust the spacing of said flanges.
8. A guide for ehanneler steels comprising a base adapted to be mounted on a ohanneler, a roller on said base adapted to contact with the rear face of a channeler steel, a pair of parallel bolts extending outwardly from said base, a supplementary portion adapted to be secured to said base by said bolts, a pair of shafts secured to said supplementary portion and arranged into apertures in said base, a pail-of r0 lers on said shafts adapted to contact with the sides of the channeler to fit closely steels, and a flanged roller on the supplementary portion formed in two parts adapted to be separated by shims to adspecification.
