To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Anornn CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful lhnprovements in Car Constructions, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to car construction.
One object of the invention is to provide a dump .car of economical construction having maximum capacity consistent with strength and rigidity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a car having a superstructure of maximum width, wherein portions of the sides are inwardly odset for the accommodation of the side ladders within the permissible overall width of the car.

Secured to the side plates 15 along their inwardly bent upper edges are bulb angles 19, each having a flange to the upperside of which the inturned edge 18 of the corresponding side wall is riveted and a flange 21 sloping upwardly and outwardly. The brackets 22 are provided with flanges 23 by which they are secured to the car wall. Each of the brackets 22 are formed with a vertically extending corrugation 24: and is further provided with a flange 25 secured to the upper flange 21 of the bulb angle 19. At suitable intervals angles 26-26 are placed back to back and secured to the interior of the side wall of the car and transversely extending tie members 272l' extend between and are secured to the angle members at opposite sides of the car. The lower margin of each side wall is reinforced by a longitudinally extending angle member 28, extending from bolster to bolster.
The car is formed of restricted width at each end thereof, from the bolster outwardly to the end of the car, primarily, in order to provide the necessary space for the safety appliances and the end portions D of the side walls are each, preferably, formed of a single plate 29 bent outwardly and up wardly at the upper edge thereof, as
indicated at 30, and then upwardly and inwardly as indicated at 31, and suitably secured to the downwardly extending flange 20 of the bulb angle 19, it being understood that the said bulb angle 19 extends throughout the length of the car. The space, between the sections D and E of each side wall of the car is bridged transversely bv the vertically extending stake G, preferably, of
shape section, with the web 32 thereof disposed in a transverse plane and the flanges 33 and 34 secured respectively to the side wall sections E and D, and preferably disposed on the outer face of the car side wall. The upper end of thestake G is constructed to conform to the shape of the plates form ing the respective side wall sections D and E, the flange 33 being continued upwardly.

At one side of the bracket a stifl'ening flange 10 is formed integrally therewith providing a construction of greatrigidity and serving to brace the upper flange 21 of the bulb angle 19 against downward bending.
The stake G is reinforced by a vertirally extending angle shaped member -11 disposed on the inside of the car and having one flange 42 secured to the inside face of the plate 15, forming a portion of the wall E, and having the flange as opposite thereto secured to the web 32 of the stake member. The angle member 41 is offset suliiciently to pass over andoverlap the bolster web plate 44, which extends transversely from side to side of the car and between the web 82 of the stake and the said flange 43 of the angle l1, the angle member, web plate and stake being rigidly united by rivets Extending outwardly from the ends of the bolster C to the end of the car are the horizontally extending brace members 45. The braces are preferably formed of channel shape and the web 46 of each riveted directly to the flange 3st of the stake G, and in order to provide additional strength, the upper flange 47 of the brace is turned upwardly in alineinent with the web 16 as shown at 18 and also riveted to the flange 34. The brace is also formed with a flange 49, at the end thereof which is riveted to the bolster web plate 14. The bolster bottom chord consists of bottom angles 50 and 51 and bottom cover plates 52. Bottom cover plate 52 is extended to corn nect with the horizontal flange of the side wall bottom angle 28 and also with the lower flange 53 of the brace 45. Angle50 is extended outwardly and has the horizontal flange thereof riveted to the horizontal flange of the side wall bottom angle 28. The vertical flange of the said bolster bot: tom angle 50 is offset over the flange 13 of the vertical angle 41 and riveted thereto, and to the bolster web plate 44.- and also to the web 32 of the stake G. .The horizontal flange of bolster bottom angle 51 is offset sufficiently to permit the same to overlap the horizontal flange 53 of the braced?) and is riveted thereto and to the bolster bottom plate 52. The vertical flange of the said angle, 51 is also offset to permit the same to overlap the vertical end flange 49- of the brace 45, the securing rivet 54 passing through the said angle 51, the flange -19 of the brace 45, the bolster web plate ii and the vertical flange of the opposite bolster bottom angle 50. In this manner .a most effective connection between the bolster and the side of the car is secured. The bolster web plate 4-]: is preferably formed to extend 1 car by the restricted ing downwardly across the car in one piece, thereby providing a direct connection between t e opposite sides of the car, but it will be understood that it may be formed in sections. The said plate 44 is bent upwardly at and secured to the underside of the sloping end floor B.
The brace 45 is extended to the end of the car and is there connected directly to the end sill 56; each of the corner posts 57, preferably, consists of an angle which extends upwardly from the end sill to within a short distance of the top of the car, terminating at the bend 30 in the side plate 2.9 The vertical end wall A is formed of a plate 58 reinforced at the top by a bulb angle 59, and a horizontal connection 60 unites the same with the side top member 19. A vertically disposed connection 61 connects the vertical. side and end walls at the upper part of, each corner of the car. Said connection has a wall 62 of irregular shape conforming to the shape of the side wall formed by bends 3O lying the end plate 58, the said walls of the connection are each extended downwardly andoverlie the corner angle 57 and are secured thereto by a plurality of rivets6 1.
Tn the recess provided at each end of the width thereof, the side ladders formed by the sill steps 66, are, disposed. Ladder treads 6'? are also provided on the end of the car in the usual manner.
The sloping end floor B of the car ,is
preferably formed in a plurality of sections,-
being divided at the bolster. ,The lower portion thereof consisting of a plate 68, which is flanged upwardly at 69 and secured to the side of the car, said flange being made to conform to the offset construction of the car as indicated at 70. The upper portion of the sloping floor B consists of a plate 71 flanged at 72 and 73 and riveted to the end plate 58 and side plate 29, respectively. \Said flange 73 isotl'set andoverlaps the offset portion oftjthe lower portion of the sloping floor.
Tt will be evident that the vertical stakes G arranged as hereinbefore described provide vertical stiffening members, at the bolsters of great strength, resisting outward bulging of the car sides, which do not in: pede the flow of the discharge material from the upper portion of the sloping fioor towards the discharge opening.
In Figs. 12' to 15 inclusive, a modified form of side wall construction is shown, wherein the recess for. the accommodation of the slide ladder treads is constructed independently of the bolster.
In said construction denotes the side top bulb rail having flange lll'sloping upwardly and outwardly and a flange 112 slopand outwardly therefrom. The side wall intermediate the body boland 31, and also a wall 63 over.
body bolster is a ladder treads 65'and sters consists of a plate 113, bent inwardly and upwardly at 114 and secured to flange 112 of the top rail. The lower margin of the plate 113 is reinforced by angle 115. The side plate 116 extending from the bolster to the end of the car is bent upwardly and inwardly at 117, preferably in the same plane as plate 113, and secured to the top rail. Near the end the side 116 is offset as indicated at 116 thereby presenting a panel, spaced from the main body of the plate and within the recess formed thereby are disposed the side ladder treads 118. The panel 116 is preferably produced by deflecting the main body of the plate inwardly, by forming a longitudinal inwardly and downwardly extending bend 119 and a vertically extending bend 120. At the bolster the respective side plates ,are united by a splice plate 121 disposed on the outside face of the car side wall, and a stake 122 on the inner side thereof. The stake 122 is preferably in the form of a pressed plate extending through the end sloping floor 123, and is connected to the bolster web plate 124 by means of plates 125 which are disposed on either side thereof.
Extending from the end sill 126 to the brace 127 which is bent as indicated at 128 to provide the necessary clearance for the side ladder. Said brace 127 is connected to the side directly by means of a gusset 129. The bolster bottom plate 130 is extended outwardly and secured to the lower flange 131 of the brace 12? and also to the bottom angle 115 of" the side wall.
The end wall of the car consists of a sheet metal plate 132 reinforced at the top by bulb angle 133. Connection between the end wall and side wall is made by means of corner post angle 13 1, vertical top corner connection 135 and horizontally extending top connection 136. The usual ladder treads 137 are provided on the end of the car as shown.
A reinforcing bracket 138 having a stiffening corruga ion 139 pressed therein is secured to the top bulb rail and serves to restrain the top of the car against outward bulging.
While I have shown and described my improved construction in connection with a car .of the hopper discharge type, it will be understood that the same is not limited thereto. but may be applied to other types of cars, wherever it is desired to utilize the full permissible clearance in the construction of railway cars for the purpose of securing increased load-carrying capacity.
I have herein shown and described what. I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, merely illustrative. and I changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

' upwardly and outwardly, and a bracket having angularly disposed flanges, one of said flanges being secured to the said angle and the other flange being secured to the side sheet, said bracket being provided with a reinforcing corrugation.
3. In a car, the combination with a side wall; ofstakes on the inner sides thereof, the top edges of said side wall being bent inwardly and upwardly; a longitudinally extending top rail secured to said inwardly bent top edge of the side wall, said rail having upper and lower flanges; and reinforcing members'on the outer side of said wall connecting the upper flange of the rail with the lower flange thereof.

In a car, the combination with end Walls; of side Walls, said side walls being composed of a plurality of sheets, having their upper ends bent outwardly and upwardly and thence inwardly and upwardly; and a flanged connecting member having one flange thereof conforming to the shape of the side wall and secured thereto and another flange overlying the end wall and secured thereto.
5. In a railwaycar, the combination with aside sheet comprising a main portion and an inwardly ofl'set portion, the upper end of the'said main portion being bent inwardly and upwardly, said ofl'set portion being provided with an upper end having a part thereof outwardly and upperwardly bent, and a part beyond said bent portion merging with said upper bent end ofsaid main side portion; of a top rail angle secured to said inwardly bent upper end of the main wall portion and also secured to thehpart of the ofiset portion merging therewit 6. In a railway car, the combination with top rail members at opposite sides of the car, said rail members extending from end to end thereof in a straight line; of a pair of opposite side plates at each end of the car, each of said plates being secured to the corresponding top rail and having portions thereof lying in different vertical planes to thereby restrict the width of the car at the opposite ends; a sloping 'fioor at each end of the car, said floor being restricted in width adjacent the corresponding end of the car and being secured to the respective side plates; and a. side stake and a corner post secured to each plate, each of said stakes also being secured to the corresponding top rail.
7. In a railway'car, including body bolsters and sills, the combination with side walls, each including a unitary plate section at one end of the car, each of said plate sections having a portion thereof offset with reference to the body of the plate to provide clearance for a side ladder, said oilset portion being connected to the body of the plate by vertically and horizontally disposed portionspof a brace at each side of the car extending from each body bolster to the corresponding end sill, each of said braces being offset to correspond with the respective plate sections, whereby to provide clearance for the corresponding side ladder.
8. in a car side, the combination with a top rail extending from end to end of the car in a straight line; of a unitary plate section, said plate section having a portion thereof offset to provide walls lying in different planes, said offset walls merging in a common plane along one edge of the plate, said edge being secured to the top rail membcr.
in a car side, the combination with an integral plate member. having an edge porti-on lying in a single plane, a section of said plate inwardly of said edge being offset laterally with reference to the remainder of the plate to provide wall portions lying in different planes; of a top rail secured to said edge of the plate.

In a car having the ends formed of lesser width than the central portion thereof, said ends having substantially vertically disposed straight corner posts, the combination with side top rail members extending longitudinally of the car and substantially in alinement with the aforesaid corner posts and secured thereto; of a plate secured respectively to the top rail member and corner post, said plate having horizontal and vertical oflsets formed therein whereby the main section of the plate is disposed outwardly of the rest of the plate to secure increased width of the car; and ladder rungs mounted on the car between the aforesaid vertical offset and the end of the car and within the plane of said widened portion of the car.
11. In a dump car, the combination with end walls; of vertically disposed side walls, each of said side walls having the major portion thereof lying in one plane, a longitudinally extending marginal top portion disposed inwardly of the plane of said major portion, and a vertically extending end mar ginal portion disposed in a plane inwardly of the plane of said major portion, said end marginal portion being united to saidmajor portion by a transversely disposed section; and a sloping floor, said floor, end and side walls together defining a hopper structure.
12. In a car, the combination with end walls; of vertically disposed side walls, each of said side walls having the major portion thereof lying in one plane, a longitudinally extending marginal top portion disposed inwardly of the plane of said major portion, and a vertically extending end marginal portion disposed in a plane inwardly of the plane of said major portion, said end marginal portion being united to said major portion by a transversely disposed section, the extreme upper edges of said top marginal portion and end marginal portion being disposed in alinement; a continuous top rail extending in a straight line from end to end of the car and secured to the upper edge of the top and end marginal portions of each side Wall of the car; and a brace secured te each side extending end marginal portion, said brace extending from the bolster at the corresponding end of thev car to the end of the inner sides 'of the side walls,

In a dump car having end Walls and body bolster, each side wall extending in the same vertical plane from a point approximately midway between the end of the car and the adjacent bolster to a corresponding point at the other end of the car, said side wall, from the point first mentioned to the adjacent end ofthe car being inwardly odset a sufficient amount to accommodate ladder rungs within the plane of the main portion of the side wall; and stakes on the said side walls being inwardly ofi'set along their upper edges and having a top rail member secured thereto. a
