UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RILEY M. DODD Ann JOSEPH A. ma or ronmmcn, CALIFORNIA Moron-common MECHANISM.
' Application flled May 8,.
0 invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same.
This invention .relates to a control mechanism primarily adapted as an attachment thereof as in oil. well or other drilling.
The invention aims to provide a simple, compactand inexpensive construction which may be built into the motor initially ormay be. designed to serve as an. attachment for the motor. 1
Additional objects and advantages will appear'from a consideration 50f the description following taken in connection with ac-' companying drawingsgillustrating an opera tive embodiment. In'said drawingze 1 p v Figure 1 is a plan view showing the control mechanism in connection with a fragment of an electric motor, and
FigureQ is a side elevation of the parts of Figure 1.
I Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in the different views.
Referring specifically to'the drawing. A designates the top'or fragment of an elec'-. tric motor. 7
A motor control shaft is providedat' 10 which maybe an extension of the main shaft J of the motor or coupled thereto-- for unitary 1 rotation therewith. Rotatable with the shaft 10 is a large master gearlw'heel 11]- which has a cylindrical hub 12. removably I telescoped over .the upper end of shaft 10 and fastened thereto as by a bolt or screw 13. v The hub 12 is j ournaled centrally -of a bed plate or base 14: which'is suitably connected to the top or casing of the motor Aas by- In testimony whereof we aflix our 1924. a Serial No. 711,858. j
means of removable bolts 15,being held at the proper elevation by spacing sleeves 16 surrounding the bolts. I I
At diametrically opposite points, bearings 17, preferably integral with the bed plate 1 1 arise therefrom and carrybushings it in which a controller shaft 1i) is journaled.
This shaft has a pinion 20 removably and rigidly fastened to it and arranged 111 mesh with the master gearwheel 1.1. A lock nut 21 is preferably removably disposed on the shaft 19 at one end thereof while at the other end, a hand wheel 22 is rigid therewith.
In use, inorder to brake the speed of rotation of the motor, or reduce-it or stop it,
hand and appropriately manipulated whereby the shaft 19 is turned and gear wheels 20 and 11 turned, imparting corresponding control. movement to the motor control shaft 10. The device provides control for the motor, independent of itscontrol switch and extending therefrom, a bed plate having an opening accommodating said shaft a master gear wheel having a hub telescoped onto said shaft and journaled in said bed plate, bolts securing said bed plate to the motor,
spacing sleeves surrounding said bolts intermediate the motor and the bed plate, bearings integralwith said bed plate, a manually operable controlling shaft journaled in said bearings, agear wheel carried by said controlling shaft in mesh with said ,master gear wheel, and a hand operable element for said controlling shaft.
