HOLDER AND LOCK FOR AUTO HOODS Filed July 5, 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR Patented May 5, 1925.

Application filed July 5, 1923. Serial 1T0. 649,811. v
To wh'om itmay concern: Be it knownjthat LPETER J. CIACOIO, a citizen of thaUn'ited States, residing at New Orleans, in the parishof Orleans and State 4 of Louisiana; have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders and Looks for Auto Hoods, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to automobile accessories and it contemplates the provision of 'a device so. constructed and arranged with respect to the hood of the automobile that rattling of the'hood is precluded and the noise and vibration of the hood incident to operation of the motor will be absorbed and effectually lessened.
The invention further contemplates the provision of an attachment for the hood surrounding the motor of an automobile whereby the hood may belocked overthe motor and access to said motor denied exeepkt to the person possessing the key to the Further objects and characteristic features of the invention will be fully understood from the followingdescription and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming art of this's ecificatlon. in which:
Figure 1 is a ongitudinalsectional view of a motor hood equipped with my novel device.
,Figure 2 is a sectional view of. a hood and looking down on same and showing a part of the elements of my invention.
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view of a hood and my improvements mounted thereon.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the gear and racks as well as locking means of my improvements.
Similar numerals of reference designate correeponding. parts in all the views of the The iit iod 1, radiator 2. shell 3 and board 4 are of the ordinary well known construction, and secured to the shell 3 near the lower end thereof and to the board 4 near the upper end thereof are adjustable members 5 that are provided with slots 6 to receive the bolts adjustable by the screw bolts 7. The members 5 are movable on the bolts and when they reach the point desired they may be made fast with resmct to the shell and board by, means of the its 7- The members 5 are provided with openings 8 for an important purpose hereinafter set forth. a
Secured within the hood 1 near the center thereof by means of brackets 12 are rack bars ,10 that are taperedat one end as indicated by 9 and the bars-travel in guides 11 as shown and are provided with teeth 13 that engagethe teeth 14 of a gear that is secured to the shaft. 15 by means of a pin 16.- The shaft 15 passes through the slde wall of the hoodand terminates in a knob 17 having the integral grips 18 by means of which the shaft 15 may be turned.
Arranged adjacent the gear of shaft 15 on the inner face of the hood is a lock 19 and this look is provided-with an arm 20 and on the end of arm 20 is a jamb block or wedge 21 that moves inwardly and 'outwardly between the teeth 13 of rack and the teeth 14 of the gear. It will be apparent that turning of the handle 18 to the right will cause the block 21 to move slightly toward the dash board of the vehicle and this movement will jam the block between the rotating gear teeth and the teeth of the rack. Manifestly the rack must be moved inwardly and the opposing rack outwardly to permit raising of the hood and contact of the block 21 with the gear teeth and the teeth of the rack will preclude such movements.
In the practical use of the device the key is turned in look 19 so as to cause wedge 21 to disengage the teeth 13 and 14. The hood is then closed down, as is the .usual custom. the handle 18 is turned and the gear of shaft rotated and the teeth 14 engage those of racks 10 and move said racks in opposite di rections until the tapered ends 9 wedge into the openings 8 of members 5. The key is then turned in look 19 and the arm brings wedge 21 into engagement with .the teeth 14 and teeth 13 of lower rack 10 thereby preventing rotation of the shaft 15 and the Manifestly the device is sim la in construction and operation and prec udes access to the vehicle motor and also the device absorbs and dprevents rattle and other noises of the hoo incident to travel of the vehicle.
The device moreover may be easily installed and removed from ahood and comprises no delicate parts that may become inoperative after a short of use and when properly positioned and finished the device adds rather than detracts from the finished appearance of a vehicle. I
Having described my invention, what I claim and desirelto secure by Letters Patent 1s:--
1. In an attachment for motor vehicles the combination of a hood covering, adjustable member's secured to the hood at the inner and outer ends thereof, guide plates arranged adjacent the members, rack bars engaged by the members and passing through the uide plates, :1 toothed gear actuable on the 00d and adapted to engage the rack and a block so constructed and arranged that movement of the gear in one direct1on will force the block between the teeth of the rack and the \gear.
2; In an attachment for motor vehicles, the combination of a hood, a radiator adjacent one end thereof, a board at the opposite end, a shell secured to the radiator, brackets mounted in the shell and board and having openings therein, guides arranged adjacent enters the hood; said gear adapted to actuate the arms, ahandle secured on the opposite end of the shaft, a lock adjacent the gear and a wedge movable by the lock for preventing rotation of the gear.
3. In a lock and noise absorber, the combination of a vehicle hood, a shaft arranged therein, a gear rotatable on the shaft, arms movable by the gear, means for supporting the arms, a lock securedin the hood and a wedge adapted to be interposed between one arm and gear to prevent rotary motion of the gear in one direction.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of'two subscribing witnesses.
PETER J. CIACCIO. .Vitnesses:
JOSEPH MORRIS -MOLL, F. D. CHARDoNNET.
